Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #43

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Oops - want to correct myself. The japanese painted ferns do have something that might be spores on the backside - does anyone know how/when to collect them? It was the maidenhair fern that has no apparent spores. Maybe that's why it's called maiden?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I was told to camoe see if there was any room left on this seed swap?

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Trina.... Star said she wouldn't be back until tomorrow... though she might pop back in, the seed addict she is... but she's the one with the list... and I do not believe she ever commented on how many open spots there are.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Teresa for responding to Trina's request. I am the one who suggested this to her as the most fun swap ever. I didn't want her to think we were ignoring her!

Kannapolis, NC

I know we're starting tomorrow afternoon, but will the time be posted as Eastern or Central? Makes a difference, you know, and with the time change tonight, it's going to be interesting!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Angie.... with Ella's son being home from Iraq, she will be occupied during the day.. I think she will get to it later in the afternoon... just checked... she's central time zone.

Kannapolis, NC

I have made my list and it is so paltry, but I'm still trying to increase my plant selections and learning to harvest seeds, so please bear with me. I'm so excited about this and can't wait 'til tomorrow! I'm learning to carry baggies, markers and pruners in the car with me!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

My first seed swap, i probably had 10 or less varieties... got about 220 in return.

I maybe only have 15 or so for this one... but i will probably have a lot of single packet of seeds... ones i got in trade and just can not use.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Woohoo! I finally got my have and want lists done. On my 'haves' I have a lot of single packets, too, that were leftovers from last year that I know I won't need now. Last year I had very little to offer and received so much. Everyone was so gracious with those of us who had little to offer. I'm glad to have plenty to offer this year. Hemophobic, and anyone else that doesn't have much, no worries! I'm sure there are several like me that make up for it! I would not be surprised if there were some that have even more than I do!

Less than 24 hours!

Tonya

Beaumont, TX(Zone 9a)

Oink, oink, oink oink! Oh wait, I guess I jumped the gun a little.

Star, if your son made it from El Paso to Lake Charles in 12 hours he was flying.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

>>El Paso to Lake Charles in 12 hours he was flying.

i think most "kids" drive this way... scary but true.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I've just typed up my list ..

I may be out of touch a few days.... but I will also be adding to it later in the week when i get a chance to sort thru all my other seeds.

Terese

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Yippeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he finally arrived at his dads. He just got his truck unpack and called and gettoing ready to crash foorthe night. Ya he flew. he made it form there to About an hour from Eufaula Alabama abotu an hout from me in about 20 hours. Can relax and breath again. Tell ya thanking God and for all the prayers too.

Can relax too when he goe s back cuz he be riding the bus. Now to count how many more grey hair s I got. Just glad he had one main highway all the way from ther e to here.

I will be seeing him after church and we will be goign to dinner with clos e friends and then he will be back on the road to flordia for a few days , then back here for another quickie visit and then he on his way back to duty.

Trinawitch.... Welcome to the piggy swap. You are number 27. Got the lists all transfered to the main openign post. I won't be backl aroudn til almost tiem for piggy swap to start, so if ya have questions til then just ask here and the other folsk will giv e ya helping hand.

Oh , my tiem thingy is wrong on Dave's. Have no ide a how to change it , but I on Estern Stand time. Same tiem as Michigan, Ohio Kentucky.. ect.

Close as I cna figure it. It will probably be somewhere closer to 6 by the time I get all the threads up. Gonna take me a bit to get the opening thread s up and posted and such and wallow thru my list and figur e what I gonan start out with. Figur e I wil probably start out with somethign slow and easy first til piggys get going.

Piggy definately will not go hungry that for sure. And new piggys don't worry if ya miss out on a oink for something, cu I wouldn't be surprised if somebody els e will have some of it too.

new Piggie s also don't worry if what you have is the same as somebody els e has on their seed list. They all go and all get used.

I know some stuff, I be listign and ya may find it liste d again. I would make a coupel of packets, go crazy with tiny seed and then switch to aner seed and then late r make some more of what I was doing before, so ne w stuff gonan be scattere d all ove r th eplace. Figur e wil giv e everybody a chanc e to get in their and oink at different times. heck bought soem stuff last year and have discovere d have bought it again this year cuz I lost my seeds. heck my seed list so far is 5 page s logn on a word doc and haven't even gotten halfway there.

Since ther e still a littl ebit of time befor e it midnight that stil makes it Halloween, so rippign tape a little bit off mouth to say that part of the name of oen new seed is Sundae. hehehe Not tellign what the othe r part is. I know.. LOl I so mean. hehehehehehe

nbgard.. that what great abotu Piggy Swap. Ya cna pass on them seed s that ya don't need or won't use. In Piggy swap ya get a gift of seed and ya passon gifts of seed.

I wa s on a sight the other day , forget wher e it was but say this and wrot e it down and thought how beautiful a saying it read:

" Happiness held is the seed. Happiness shared is the flower."

Everybody share s seed and has funa dn joy doing it and then folsk get to have pretty flowers and share the beauty and smile sof them with other foks and nature .

Ok, gonan do a fe w more packets then grab some sleep, now that I knwo that child of mine is sleeping. Ahhhhh to be young again.

Onlt about 18 and half horus to go. Reve them piggy snots up. : )

Polkton, NC(Zone 7b)

I wonder what would happen if everyone had the SAME seeds? Would we all have to call the seed companies and beg for an order overnight just so we would have something to oink over! If I didn't get any seeds at this point I would have to revert to my chocolate addiction and that ain't pretty folks. I gained 40 in the last 12 months, and it went on so fast that I got a terrible case of Dunlap's (belly done lapped over the belt) so please nobody back out now ok?

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Hahahahahahha. wouldn't that be something. it could maybe one day be a possibility, but with my seed addiction and having to shop for seed all the time, don't see it happening.

Asonfan. You think you got it bad with chocolate. I have amajro Pringle s addition going on and nee d to quit it. I cna buy thre ebig cans and in three days they gone. I pop a top on them and don't stop til I hit the bottom of the can. Was great when the corner store wa s out of them.

Polkton, NC(Zone 7b)

HaHa Star I know just how you feel. I've done that with funyuns. You'll get tired of them soon and will probably never eat another one lol :)

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OH.. i remember Funyuns... Yum Yum... .. I tend NOT to buy those types of junk food.. I think it's the salt in them that makes them so addicting... though i do buy tortilla chips.

Polkton, NC(Zone 7b)

now if only chocolate would let me go, but it just hangs on and on and.....

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

i'm a choco-holic... usually once i start eating it, I can't stop. Years ago i was really bad... but i've gotten better. I still LOVE it though.

Ugggg. I gotta go to bed... long day tomorrow....

but -- one last check of my "list" before I shut down.... gotta check it twice....

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Since I will be away from the computer most the day tomorrow... when we hit 200 posts, or when Star is going to start the Piggy Thread in the Seeds Trading Forum... can someone start a new thread?
if we get much over 225, we may start losing her.

And to those that are new to this... Star will most likely add a link to the Seed Trading Forum Piggy Swap thread in our most current thread... then you will link over to it and add your lists and or start oinking for seeds.

ok.. now i'm really out of here...... Nite all.

Kannapolis, NC

Terese: I think I promised you some salvia farinacea seeds and I know I harvested some, but for the life of me, I cannot find those seeds! I'll check the pockets of my pants again just to make sure I didn't stash them in one of them, and if I find them or can get more seeds, I'll let you know. Drat!

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

ok I am new to this so I feel bad cause the only things I have are double marigolds and mixed single flowered hollyhocks. so can someone explain to me again what I do (Thanks Lynn for pointing me over here) Now next year I know I will have a ton of seed

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Trina, you can always buy some seeds to add to your offerings. Star will be posting the list thread and the chat thread later today, with instructions, so just be looking for them. She'll probably post a link here.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

ok I'll be on the lookout for them!...my problem is I have a lot of packets I only need Like 10 seeds from, so the rest just sit there

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Hi Trina,

What perenniallyme meant by buying seeds to add to your list was that usually the real newbies don't have many seeds at all. So what is usually suggested is that you buy a bunch of one type of seed that you think others might be interested in (and you like also) and offer 10 to 20 baggies of that type of seed.
A good place to do that would be Hazzard seeds, http://www.hazzardsgreenhouse.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=Hazwho

another Harris seeds -
http://www.harrisseeds.com/storefront/s-502-helenium.aspx

Swallowtail seeds has a bulk seeds area:
http://sc2.vom.com/cart/seeds/orderform.fwx?C=A

Or you can go to someplace like Value seeds and buy several types of seeds you want and split them for the swap.

I'm guessing, but Salvias (Salvia Evolution might be a good one, lots of seed, not much money.), pansies, violas, petunias are always good choices that people want.

Anyone want to add to this?

Trina, I see that we crossed posts.

Trina, if, as you said, you have a lot of packets that you only need a few seeds from, you can offer the rest, or some of them, to the piggies, and that will increase your list. I've bought some seeds that I won't be needing all of, that I'll be adding in addition to my collected seeds. That's part of what this is about - spreading around the seeds we don't need ourselves.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

ok. I think I got a grasp of it now, if not I'm sure you will all correct me...LOL

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

The only thing I might add toofew is if you have a partial pack of seeds like trinawitch is talking about just list the amount of seeds if it's very few a lot of us don't care if it's just a few seeds but it's nice to know what you are getting when you ask for it :) It only takes one seed to germinate for seeds the following year to collect seeds from :)

Gang I've got so much to do today and haven't even made my labels out yet to start bagging lol Just wish I hadn't lost that word document that had a lot of labels in it it would be soo much easier!

Star glad your son made the trip all in one piece lol You have a wonderful time with your visit and if any of the newbies have any questions I'll be here for a few hours waiting to hear from you with answers I hope :) I'll just be bagging and tagging today sounds so easy doesn't it lol

If anyone needs help dmail me :) I think one of the most important things to remember is to put your DG name on all of your seed packets so if we do have any questions when we receive them we can dmail you.

Welcome to the swap trinawitch your gardens are going to love you next year :) Don't worry about not having enough seeds some people like me aren't going to oink very much but have a lot of seeds to offer it will all even out in the end! Just have fun :) You can always do what toofew is suggesting for extra seeds and have more for yourself too :) We oldies always end up ordering more seeds than we need and a lot of us end up offering partial packs in the swap of those I just got 17 packs the other day and when I get time I'll go thru those for the swap :) Already I know I have one pack of free seeds that I'm going to split to offer lol

I still have tons of seeds to clean lol I have my deposition set up for Wed. and so nervous about that I hope I don't mess up. I'm having to look for specific dates for things happening around here and I'm not one for dates the years go by so fast now something could happen a couple of years ago and I think it was just a few months ago LOL I have dmails that I've talked to a couple of people about what I have been going thru to see what happened when but going thru all of these damails is really driving me nuts but thank God for dmails I would never remember all that has happened by dates LOL I so envy people that can say back in 1967 at 2:00 in the afternoon I did such and such I have a friend that is like that and it just amazes me! If I knew what questions they were going to ask at the deposition it would be so much easier! I feel like I'm studying for an exam LOL

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Do I have to have botanical names with all of my seeds? i.e. say I have purple/blue
Wave Petunias, is that enough, or do I have to research each one for the botanical name?

(Zone 7a)

Lea, I don't know how you are doing depositions and piggy swap etc all at the same time - that boggles my organization-challenged mind. You must have more internal resources than you think from all that you are handling - I'm very impressed. Sending you positive thoughts and energies in the days to come for things to go well for you. Keep us posted and let us know when we can lend an ear or a shoulder or a brain cell or two.

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

bluespiral just posted a new thread, so pleas move over to here:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1052728/

(Zone 7a)

new thread - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1052728/

I apologize for jumping the gun with a new thread, but hunting for seeds in my hovel is not for the unfocused

Jnette, botanic names are most appreciated, since ya don't havta go hunting around for which common name is the real one. But, having said that, we don't have to be too precise as long as the recipient can figure out what the seed is. So, for example, if you write on the seed packet:

Petunia - purple/blue Wave

That will do the trick.

Here's a PlantFiles page that can help find a botanic name, if all you have is a common name - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?Search=Click+here+to+search+for+plants . And, then sometimes just ask us piggies and we might be able to help, too. My Hortus III has an appendix that lists plants by their common names and then gives botanic names for each one, so maybe I'll be able to help out there. I'll drop in occasionally.

As we go to the next thread, let's keep up support for Lea and help fer Newbies and best wishes for Star's visit with her son home from Iraq

Karen

Hey all, do we know an end-date for the piggy swap? I'm just signing up for the Summerhill coop, and wondering if I should order some seeds to share with piggies... thinking it will run too long for that though..
