jfleming--that is great success for your cold frames!!
I like the roll up shade idea too.
I am ROFL over holly and ric cross posting EACH OTHER!!!!!! too funny
Fall/Winter Projects
Stormy, I live in northern VA. Last Monday it was 65 degrees and sunny. I spent the day dragging all my plants outside for a good watering. The plants live outside during the warm seasons and suffer indoors in the winter. Getting outside for a day was good for me and the plants. It's now a cold, windy 21 degrees here. I guess we're all in for a bit of a winter storm. We're supposed to get the bitter cold but not much snow here.
Holly and Ladygardener, I've had visions of a salad in my head for way too long now. It makes me grumpy just buying lettuce from a grocery. I had hopes of lettuce to eat during the winter. But without a heated greenhouse, I guess that won't be happening here.
Possibly, next winter, we'll rig up some heat and try again. The garden boxes will be great for getting a jump on growing this spring though.
Here's a pic for daydreaming of warmer weather gardening!
Wow, that's lovely Jfleming. It hit 62 here on Monday. Now it's frigid. I'll be interested to see what you come up with for heat.
I can see myself sitting on that stone, soaking up the sun. Gosh, do you think I'm part amphibian.
I did write to admin. Sorry no Name that Guy competition. They said they aren't set up for something like that and maybe the new company would take a look at a Family membership. So I guess we will be confusing you all for a while longer. I think Ric liked the idea and would have paid maybe $10 but couldn't see it being worth $20. LOL
Sally, you should have seen us Ric on the one computer and me just steps away on the lap top. Both of us asking each other "What thread are you in" or "Did you see this post" what a pair.
fleming, What a pretty picture to brighten up the day.
Ahhh--Holy and Ric!
In my opinion--you two are just extensions of each other.....a forever joined couple.
I always think it is neat when I read a Post from Holly--and at the end realize it was Ric who wrote it. See! I can't even tell the difference.....
Anyway--I live FIVE minutes from the Ikea at White Marsh and my daughter works there.....read that as a 20% discount....
IF you are hosting the Plant Swap again--just let me know what you want--and i will, gladly, pick it up for you.
Same goes for you, Jill. If you know anything YOU would want....small things....Like those trays I use under my seedlings.... lazy susans (wood--$7.99) to put big potted plants on so you can rotate them...
Now--as i am riding up with Sally and we may have more than the two of us--keep in mind that there won't be room for big things.
I appreciate the offer, Gita! They have great plant pots sometimes... but what I really need is much more mundane, LOL... I could use a couple dozen more of their black plastic hangars (the ones that are squared off rather than made from rounded plastic tubes like Walmart has)... but I'm sure I'll get out there again eventually. We may stop in the Pittsburgh one the next time we go up that way...
I also picked up some bigger storage containers from them with clear tops (you might be using those same tops as seedling trays; trying to remember)... drilled holes in both tops and bottoms, and they worked great stuffed with pots of wintersown seeds!
those cells look like they might be a perfect size for my bloom master planters!!!
Gita I have several of those size cells. That is what I put my plugs in. When I first transplant them. Thank you for the offer to pick up some thing at Ikea. I will remember that. There are a few tings that I know I want but I had such a good time poking around in that store. You never know just what you might find. Holly
Just realized how many posts we have so I've moved our projects to a new thread :) http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1072846/
I pruned some of my roses. I'll do more intensive this month. I lost my gloves on them a few times that I ended up pruning bare-handed till my hands froze. Trying to pull snagged gloves off a rose bush isn't fun and fires my already short temper.
The two small veggie patches need refinement. I've decided on potatoes this year, so they're gonna need sand. The mud was like Play-Dough last year. I am surprised I got tomatoes but they really looked troubled. I have some trees in pots that need planting but I must wait for the ground to be more workable. Porbably not till March.
I'm still poring over catalogs. So fun.
Foxnfirely, RCN moved to a new thread but I wanted to post this to you here. Have you looked at growing your potatoes in straw? Ric did that last year there is a whole thread over in the Veggie Forum talking about growing them in barrels filled with straw. See you on the new thread Holly
