STEP AWAY FROM THE LAUNDRY ROOM!
Someone please come and save me. I might be getting a bit obsessive compulsive here. I just got done wiping everything down and started putting things on the shelves. I usually cover the bigger less often used things with plastic bags to keep them cleaner. As I was wrapping up the big roaster and the turkey fryer pot I started thinking maybe I should make cute little cloth dust covers for everything. The really scary thing is I may seriously do that. After all Ric asked me to get one for his new mixer and I was thinking I could just buy some material and custom make them for all the big stuff. HELP Holly
Fall/Winter Projects
LOL Now who's on a roll????
Oh Holly you poor girl! Sorry no help here, I think the matching dust covers would be nice, get something red to pick up the color of the new washer and dryer. get extra just in case you get a new appliance down the road that needs a cover.
Just call me "Chris, the enabler" LOL
OK, I have an easier idea for hiding the bulky, seldom-used pieces, especially if they are all on the same shelf... drape the front of the shelf with fabric. If you use either 3 or 5 hemmed panels going across and overlap them by an inch and a half maybe 2 inches, you can create the look of box pleats (alternate -- 1 panel on top, next panel underneath the first, 3rd panel overlaps on top of the second) and still be able to reach into the shelf easily. That will also serve to make the entire shelf into dust-free storage.
Of course, if you're putting those pieces on different shelves, separate covers might work out better
LOL Great ideas everybody!
WMPL(wet my pants laughing) at the 'Step away from the laundry room'
Definitely red accents. I LOVE red.
RCN, I really love your idea of adding molding to your island... it'll give it that trendy "furniture" look. :-)
You may have to scuff-sand the cabinets a bit to get the darker stain picked up. A dark glaze (which is paint, not stain) might be an alternative... pick some part that doesn't much show and experiment LOL.
Roses-R-Red had a really cool movable island that could be moved to the end of her counter to extend it partially across the dinning room entry, or set as an L at the end as it is in this picture. This made a lot of extra space in the kitchen where many people had their wine and appitizers. I've thought about constructing my island so I could just wheel it away and open my galley kitchen to the great room. Ric
PS. Don't mention this to Holly, I'm not sure I need this on the to do list. LOL Ric
Ric, You forgot the picture.
RCN, that would look great.
Huntsville, Texas was a great area fifty years ago when we were there. The builder using second hand and waste products to build inexpensive housing would make it yet another interesting trip. Those were not junky smaller homes at all.
Here is the link again. Don't miss this one.

LOL, Ladyg, I knew I could count on you. To stand right by my side and say "Go Girl". Forever the enabler. LOL
Love the red idea I will be looking at some material a bit later. My DIL does have my sewing machine right now so maybe I will run out of steam before it comes back.
Critter I know just what you are talking about years ago I had some curtains like that on one of my old cabinets. Ric actually did want to put doors on the shelves but I really did want them open and there will be a door between the utility/mud room and the whole laundry room area. That will cut down some of the dirt from the coal stove. Boy that back room does get dusty. I did pick up the floor tile today looks like a pretty easy job but I don't think either Ric and I are up to much tonight.
Critter and RCN, you both are a bad influence on me I have been looking at the downstairs bath and thinking new coat of paint. Then I was looking at the cabinets and thinking wonder what they would look like painted????
OK, here's a totally weird idea that just popped into my head to give you the option of screening off the shelves without doors that might get in your way... what about a roller blind or window shade? Not covering the whole area, just coming down from the ceiling and maybe to the middle shelf. You'd probably use those shelves for stuff you didn't get down very often (i can see the turkey fryer on the top shelf!), and when you needed something you could just raise the shade. It might even give the illusion of having a window at the end of that little hallway...
Yah, even as i was typing I realized that's probably just too weird to work, but I typed it, so I'm gonna post it! LOL
Jill, I don't think that is a weird idea, I was thinking of a Roman Shade myself.
That would work better than the sort of slatted roll-up blinds we still have on most of our windows... they were meant to be a temporary solution, LOL...
No Critter that isn't a totally weird idea. I think it is a very good idea. I really like the open shelves where I can just walk in and grab what I want but if I find it gets too dusty I just might do that.
RCN, I was just checking around to see what adhesive I wanted to use under my tile border... under "application tips" for Liquid Nails Ceramic & Tile Adhesive, it says tiles may be set from top to bottom. http://www.liquidnails.com/products/product.jsp?productId=23#appTips
:-)
Holly--
This will probably be even a crazier idea (and i am NOT talented in the decorating area)--but how about a (gasp!) beaded type of a "curtain"? a la the 70's.....They used them as room dividers and at windows. It WAS the macrame age, after all.
Anyway--humor me for just a few minutes--this kind of a "curtain" would allow you to reach in and get whatever you want, and it just falls back into place after you remove the item--screening everything. No rolling up or down of a shade.
You could make your own in any colors that you like......for el-cheapo!
OK! I am done with my "retro attitude" here........Gita
LOL Gita, I use to have one of those beaded curtains, in my first apartment. Along with a black light and my peace chair. The peace chair was an old wooden chair with foam set and back. I had rather psychedelic fabric on the cushions and flowers, doves and a peace sign painted on the wood. The whole thing glowed in the dark when you turned on the black light. I remember one of my younger cousins introducing me to t friend and saying very proudly " This is my cousin Holly, she is a Hippie!" LOL
hey, folks, I know we don't always think to check for new threads... our Chantell needs us... http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1072252/
Well folks, it's 55 degrees and sunny today. So, I thought I'd take a few pics of my winter gardening experiment. We built cold frames for our raised garden boxes. Even with temperatures close to zero, this winter, these vegetables have managed to survive. They are super slow growing, but still hanging in there! Here is the Pac Choi and Napa Chinese Cabbage
They look so neat in the snow Jfleming. How far south in VA are you that it got as high as 55 today? It's freezing here today. I think next month you will start to see a good bit of growth on those veggies. There are lots of warmer sunnier days in February.
Jfleming, thanks for the update, what a nice head start to your vegatables, looks like a salad in your future.
That looks really good. I have visions of fresh lettuce dancing in my head. I bet next summer there maybe a few new cold frames in the MA. LOL
Ric put the new floor down in the laundry room for me today while I was out. There is still some trimming work to be done. Mostly all the moulding will be light grey but the custom made the oak door sill that he made from old oak barn boards will stay natural. He will make one similar for the opening into the washer/dryer area. Think I will do a little bit of work on the cement floor area as it doesn't look as good as it had now that I made some changes to the vinyl flooring. I have some darker brown and light tan floor paint which I think I will sponge in to make it blend better.
Holly, that floor is really nice looking. You'll probably be spending a lot of time in that laundry room! LOL
Since she got her new washer and dryer I don't even have to do my own laundry. LOL Ric
You are a wise man, Ric.
I love the floor.
I love that hand-made step-stool!
Gita, The step stool came from Ikea. It is really nice. Next time I get down there I'd like to pick up a couple more one for the kitchen and one for the garage.
Gita, I wish I could claim the credit for the stool. It's Ikea from the Baltimore store no less, all I did was stain it. Since I use it as an ad hoc work top, I've stained it in ways that don't please her also. Well as "Blue Eyes" sang, "That's Life"! Ric
To think people were confused before, now that we have twins ( two computers) we can cross post, and edit each other's post. That's as bad as her mom's family. Picture this: six women having a conversation and finishing each others sentences, and wondering why their men are lost' LOL Ric

You guys just like being different and keeping everyone on their toes!! I've learned to look at the bottom of your posts before I start reading.
LOL Stormy, It's gotten worse now that we have two computers. I have been wondering what kind of deal I could get for a family DG subscription so Ric would have his own. Might make it a bit less confusing. Holly
Holly, why don't you send a dmail to the admin and ask?
I'd be interested to see what Ric would use as a screen name. Maybe we can hold a MA contest, Name that Guy!
I have been thinking of doing just that. (Wirting to admin). LOL over the Name that Guy.
Holly........I'm relatively sure if you offer Ric and 99 other family members you may get a 20% family discount which according to my pencil scratching would be $16.00 providing you guarentee a minimum of three years and pay in cash. You should try to do that to save the bucks.
