My gosh, what a list from Summerhill! Hope I don't have to buy, but I sure did spot some on there that I want.
Cottage Garden Seed Swap and Chat #42
Angie -- I too am trying to stay away.
aw... am i being a bad influence? ;-) I think I'm just wanting to plant something... all these rocks, and now a mountain of mushroom compost in my driveway, and a date with the shovel and wheelbarrow for about the next week or two... seeds are just so easy to contemplate!
LOL kl
believe it or not, i'm just about done harvesting seeds. With the early COLD weather, most of the plants are toast.
Come to think of it.... I have two plants still blooming that i want to snag seeds from.
there was one MG, some seeds i got from the last Summerhill Co-Op, i was hoping to find some seeds... not a one!! and i never even saw it bloom. I was pretty sure it was not the bloom that was in the image... as it should have been blue, and all i had was "Granpa Ott" looking blooms. I was quite disappointed.
Terese
Neal, I haven't been here for a couple of days, but I wanted to add my sincere condolences to your and yours. Sending a Big Hug your way ... I remember how much a hug meant to me when my parents passed away. Just last weekend we stopped by their graves and each got a small pumpkin and 2 small gourds. Mom loved Halloween ... Dad loved the candy. lol
Seandor, I have a climbing rose I would love to try to grow from seed ... do you think I may get a climbing rose from it?
And leave it to Kelly to tempt you all with the SummerHill seeds ... Bad Kelly! I know you can see my name on that co-op post. lol
tcs1366 - is swamp milkweed a short lived perinneal? Mine lived for 3 years then died. I sent out tons of seed during those 3 years not dreaming I should have kept some for myself.
It was 'Cinderella' from Parks seed (I think).
Here is a picture.
toofew... this was my first year with them blooming... so i really dont know how long they live....
when they were sown, I thought they were Butterfly Weed, until the bloomed... Whoops.
Lea would know as I got some Swamp MW from her too.
Terese
OMG! If I could sell Ladybugs! I have a few hundred that found their way into my house and thousands flying around the outside of it. My little ones are having a field day trying to catch them. They are my 6 year old's favorite thing to try to catch. You should have seen her face when she came home from school. She hit the ladybug lotto. I guess there are A LOT worse things that could invade your home lol!
Andrea
here too... those darned Asian beetles bite though. the cat is having fun trying to catch them, the rest of us are swatting them away.
Yep lol my cats are having a ball with them, they leaves spots all over your windows! It's time for a nail trim with the cats so I'm hoping they don't get their nails caught in the storm door before I get to them tonite they have done it before with bugs lol
I just got seeds from Summerhill not the Co-Op just ordered got 17 packs! And I say I'm not growing much this year LOL I knew better HA! But in my defense they are annuals :) and they sent me four extra packs I've never ordered from them before shipping was good too I'll be going back I'm trying to stay away from the Co-Ops this year but I may have to sneak a peek! I was esp. impressed with their annual geranium count on their seeds and they were a lot cheaper than T&M! I couldn't wait for the geranium seeds I was afraid they would sell out before I got to order them I've had it happen too many times and had to settle for what they had left.
The only seed left that I want yet are the pineapple sage seeds but they got a little frosty the other night and oh yes more of that white and red annual salvia that I have I just hope they have time to make more seeds before the cold gets them!
Going out to put my EE's in pots poor thangs have been waiting for about five days had to get more soil less mix.
They bite!? I didn't know that. I guess they must be in a pleasant mood. That definitely would put a damper on my little ones bug catching.
Good call on the nail trimming... I didn't think of that. Great Idea!
Hahahahahha. Ladybugs are your friends. yep it tiem for them to start lookign for a warm place to hiberbate for the winter. The one year they picke d my van that was broke. They was all oe r and up in it. All in the cracks all around.
The Ladybug talk got me to wondering about them, why they in recent years have become a pest in homes? I don't remember seeing them swarm in homes and structures when I was a kid. This article mentions that they sometimes pinch people, and suggests the pest species differs somehow from others that don't infest homes. It does say they're beneficial in the garden regardless.

Does anyone know about Ptilotus "Joey" ? i posted a question about the seeds on the annuals forum, with no replies yet....
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=7191999
just where are the seeds?
Lady bugs are major aphid eaters and durign the winte r they liek to hide unde rleave s and easily accessible mulch . Think the cmign in th ehous e is to try and stay warm for a bit. Weather conditiosn have changed alot so alot of beneficals and pests are changign their habits too.
lady bugs are on a declien cuz so many folsk us e so many chems that they kill them off too. And thign is even with chems they don't always get down into the nics and grannies of the plant foliage where the aphids will go and hide. You cna spray a chem and kil the top ones, btu wait a coupel days and you have major outbreak again cuz the ones hidden in the crown foliage have muiplied liek crazy. The lady bugs will go down into them cracks and get the aphids to eat.
I quit using chemicals in my yard years ago.... If i see "pests" -- i'll use a soap and water mix to kill them... but i never spray the lady bugs / asian beetles, as i know they are beneficial... though those dang asian ones do bite... got me again yesterday.
Boy -- we've all been quiet.... i was hoping someone would know about those "Joey" things....
they, along with Profusion Zinnias [which i HATE sorting] are the only two i have left to clean.... and I have decided the Rudbeckia, BES will all have a bit of chaff.
also, with those Ruds.... I sown some last Spring, and the plant tag said "Indian Summer" .. .they were a beautiful yellow and burgundy... but then i looked up Indian Summer and those are supposed to be all Yellow.
Soooooooo, all my seeds will be marked Rudbeckia, B.E.S. Gloriosa Daisy. I'm sure there may be some Indian Summer in there somewhere.... butr i musta lost track.
toofeanimals - I have no idea what you will get! But it will be fun to try ^_^
I am going to take some seeds from one of my roses and see what I get.
edited to add: I took cuttings from one of my climbing roses in June - dipped them in rooting compound and put the in behind the "mother plant" in the shade. I now have 7 baby Westerland roses. It probably helped that it rained most of June and July here. ^_^

Terese, I googled last night trying to find out about how to collect those seeds for you but couldn’t find any thing, just that they are in variation when you sow them they may not come true to the plant. I saw that one in the thread that you chimed in on and it’s a pretty plant! I like the ones that the bloom goes all the way to the ground.
Tofew, I’m sorry didn’t see the post about the Cinderella milkweed, I thought I had that one but so many look like the same plant lol I ended up with showy and don’t know how to get my post off of the one in the plantfiles. I did notice that one post in there they lost theirs after three years so they may very well be short lived. I have the seeds to that one to start but with me not knowing if I am going to have my place next year I’m not sure that someone else would appreciate all the weeds that I grow so I’m waiting to see what happens before I plant anymore milkweeds :) I have a spot for them just in case though lol I love the milkweeds! Are you sure that they didn’t die from the milkweed wilt? Or too much rain maybe? I lost my purple ones this year from the wilt.
I have the pink swamp milkweed but tried to dig it out because it was right in front of the porch, wrong spot don’t know why I planted it there lol I tried for three years to get rid of it and finally this year it didn’t come back so it’s not fair to that plant to say if it was short lived or not I didn’t help any lol
I used to not worry that much about the lady bugs being in the house I just pitched them in the basement with my plant stands when they were going and I would find one upstairs because they made such a mess on the windows but I read if they can’t find anything else to eat they can eat wood so now they all go outside from now on! Yes I read that they can eat wood when I was googling them!
Ok, I'm going to start whinning about my seeds to collect yet I'm getting impatient :)
I can't remember who I got my Painter's Pallet seeds from and I'm wanting to collect some off of mine and wondering how to do it does anyone know? They have flowers but they are so small then they are gone and I see NO seeds on this plant what so ever it's really got me puzzeled!
What about these Pentas too lol They have been making seed forever when do they stop so I can collect them! lol I really want those seeds for the swap they are Butterfly Red :) I may have to bring them in the house when it starts getting cold but they may not have a chance to finish making seeds because I don't have any light in this dungeon lol I'm not turning on my lights for seeds lol The tops of the seed pod are brown but the bottom part isn't brown yet. I have the same problem with some pretty little campanulas that I have too, have been waiting forever!
The 15 yr. old across the street was diagnosed with H1N1 yesterday! I have some kind of flu right now but don't have time for it lol I have been taking my vinegar and honey with lemon for three days and it seems a little better I don't think I have been around Steven here lately so I'm not worried about that and I wash my hands in Dial soap every time I get home from shopping! That H1N1 is pretty scary now and hope Steven is going to be alright but his parents took him to the doctor soon as he got a sore throat so he should be alright I hope, the schools here are flooded with kids with it!
I don't think my Milkweed died from wilt, but it sure was attacked each year by aphids and those Red/black milkweed bugs.
Only a few lady bugs on our house these last couple of days. I had to chuckle though, my web page had a list of the top 'searches' and Ladybugs was one of them. lol
LeBug, I work in a hospital and have Direct Patient Contact, so I was able to get the shots for the regular flu and the H1N1 flu. I got them 2 days apart in the same arm, but for once they didn't hurt at all ... really. The RN giving the shots tried to get me to take the shots in my left arm since I'm right handed, but I'm getting physical therapy for my left shoulder, so both shots in my right arm ... no problem.
My daughter says tons of kids at her university have missed classes the last 2 weeks, she has the sniffles ... yikes.
Son says not to much is happening at his college.
This week and next is supposed to be the peak for the H1N1 around here.
I don't know how long for the penta and the campanulas, but please try to get them in the swap ... I think a lot of people would be interested in them ... hint , hint.
I'm off to finish cleaning the gardens. My seeds are all done ... smiling here.
How can you have your seeds done toofw! Ha! I'm still collecting and hav sacks and cups of seeds everywhere and there is no one here anymore to keep me from doing it except for planting and the computer lol
I don't think aphids and those Red/black milkweed bugs would really kill a plant, those milkwed bugs play heck with the seeds though!
I was gong to collect seeds from my Cherry Bell campanulas this year and kind of forgot I was mad at them because they just took my front bed by the house over! If I am here next year I'm going to start digging them all out this just isn't the spot for them don't want them to take over my other plants. I'm trying to get those other seeds apparently they don't spread as much or maybe I just can't see from the weeds in them this year lol
I will try and get those seeds lol I've already had one black widow in the house from bringing plants in, my EE's the other day so I'm a little leary of bringing them in now lol I need to get some insecticidal soap spray before I bring the rest in for sure! I didn't have black widows here until a few years ago, I bought the last of this guys perennials that was selling plants and had one in one of his pots now I have them outside! I see them all of the time around my garage! Of course I kill them when I see them and now I know what their egg sacks look like and destroy them if I see them.
I don't worry about shots hurting that much I just had cold symtoms going on when the regular flu shots were offered so couldn't get one hope this one is over by the time they offer the H1N1 that won't be until the middle of Nov. and they ran out of the regular flu shots a while back. I just figure I'm not getting any younger so I'd better start getting them :)
Lea, thoughts and prayers for speedy recovery to Stephen and anyone else who may come down with H1N1.
Regarding the H1N1 flu, I am definitely not knowledgeable about it or what to do or not to do, so I cannot say that the advice on this link is good or bad. But under the section towards the bottom, entitled "HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF", the foods that it recommends to eat and not to eat seem harmless. I think it's a good idea to pay attention to the comments about the Cytokine storm - what it is and which substances make it worse and which do not. http://flourishingincrisis.wordpress.com/tag/alternative-medicine/
If anyone has any corrections or better advice, by all means I'd love to hear it.
Our local newspaper says that now is the time when the vaccine is most needed here, but Baltimore is neither getting as much vaccine as it is said to need, nor when it is most needed. Evidently the powers that be say we shouldn't be so dependent on foreign production of vaccine, but I have heard that criticism for years and there's been a big hoopla over H1N1 at least over the past year, so it doesn't seem like we ought to be having this problem now.
Anyhoo, I hope this helps - I want y'all around and healthy and happy for a loooonng time to come.
--------------------------------
Lea, is your red Butterfly pentas a short squat one or taller? I grew a white, short squat one around some lemon verbena this summer, and 'twas not a match made in heaven - lemon verbena loved that spot but trounced the pentas. I would love a taller, red pentas among the herbs out our back door. I grew it years ago, and the hummingbird was always visiting it and never seemed to mind if we were outside nearby or not. I think it would be very pretty near curly parsley. I'd love to mix nasturtiums in there, too, but some critter always chomps it to stubs...maybe I should start trying to work in some hanging pots to give critters more of a challenge...our Havahart cage does trap woodchucks, etc., but they sure do munch quite a bit before they waltz into the trap grrr.
------------------
I have a few mostly hardy perennials from which to share seed, but the late, tall blue aconite has just begun to flower (I grow it among the hayscented fern, which masks the flopping, diseased lower parts of the stems very nicely in the shade) and the creeping Astilbe chinensis var. pumila is still green. It's been quite a circus around here in the last few days bringing in tender plants while trying to snag seeds while I can...not to mention cleaning seeds.
Does anyone know about seeds on Kalimeris mongolica (Mongolican Aster)- mine makes clouds of tiny double, white asters in sprays like gypsophila (Baby's Breath), but does it from August to frost in shade, whereas Baby's Breath hates my shade and any flowers are done long before July. I collected some seed heads, but don't see any seeds - anyone know?
Seandor - interesting about those rose cuttings - we had a similar experience with a crutter-chomped Vielchenblau earlier this year, before it made any buds - I agree about cool wet weather helping successful rooting - very nice surprise
Teresa - major ewwww to biting Asian lady bugs
looks like I crossed a few posts above - apologies if I'm being redundant
OH -- i'm in search of.... Blue Sage [Salvia farinacea]... anyone have any seeds?? was gonna get some in a trade, but the gal is out.
I think this years Wants list is gonna be....
Agastache, Sage, and Salvias all in various colors.
OH and regarding Flu shots... I guess i have an aversion to needles.... so i'm not getting one.
Karen: I don't have any seeds, but I did snag 2 Salvia farinacea at Lowe's for $1 each! If I get seeds next year, I'll save you some. I've got cuttings of Salvia Maraschino Cherry and Hot Lips that I hope will root as well. Hot Lips is finally starting to look like it should. Early on I had all white blooms or all red blooms, just a few with the red lips. Now the plant looks great, just when I have to start thinking of cutting it back! Drat.
Shoot. Now that I done read through all the posts, forgot who aske d abotu this.
I didn't even think to colelct the seeds of the Painter's Pallet this year, forgot al abotu them til ya mentioend them.
To colelct them the plants bloom yep, them tiny flower s and the see d is even tinier. You kind of have to keep an eye everyday on them cuz once they finish bloomign, they make seed quick and it will disappea r if ya don't watch. Either that or put soem real tiny holled netting aroudn to catch the seeds.
I been on the run and moving stuff all day so brain not with me yet. I gathere d soem really seet smellig Jasimaine vine seeds today, now just got to see if I cna figrue out which one.
I hunted and hunted too to see abotu them Pitilous Joey seed but couldn't find otu anythign either. Was hopign soembody would have a pic of them . Onyl thing I could think of was if I not mistaken. Somebody on ebay had soem seed s for sale , would be to ebay them and ask them for pic of what seed slook like if they would do that.
Lebug, you got me thinking about the campanulas, and I went into the back to check on my Campanula takesimana or Korean Bellflower. They bloomed this year for the first time. I think they were quite beautiful. I guess some people say they are quite aggressive, but so far mine haven't been, but then I planted them next to the woods ... not in a garden bed, and they are having a hard enough time competing with the weeds and trees and such.
These campanulas like part shade or morning sun and can take some dryer soil, so they are kind of nice.
Any way ... those seeds are finally done, but I'm finding hardly any seeds, they are super tiny. I don't know how many pollinators found them, being in the shade and all.
As I clean up the gardens, I am finding a couple types of seed that I think, hummm, maybe I could save a few of those, even if there are only a couple, it would be enough to offer 1 for the swap. I found a hosta that had gone to seed ... I always cut the blooms off my hosta, must have missed this one. Actually the seeds were inside my Japanese Iris foliage and I was all excited thinking I had seeds from my Japanese Iris ... sigh, only hosta seeds ... I'll save them for the swap. lol
Next year I will try to get seeds from my Japanese Iris 'Crystal Halo' if anyone is interested.
Ok, its getting ready to rain and I haven't finished what I wanted to outside, so back out I go.
DH & I got H1N1 vaccines today... not a shot, we sniffed it. Even if you don't generally get flu shots, this one is worth getting if you can... We especially wanted to do it in order to protect Little Bit. :-)
Critter, you have to be under 50 yrs old to get the nasal spray. I got a compliment (I'll take what ever compliments I can get) the day I got my H1N1 flu shot. She offered me the spray ... I thanked her for thinking I was under 50. smiles I'm 50 plus a few months, but I'll take that compliment and more anyone wants to throw my way.
Glad you and hubby got the vaccination with that beautiful new baby in the house.
Oh, Critter, I was roaming through forums the other day. That baby is so dog-gone pretty. I know you all absolutely adores the floors she crawls on if she's crawling yet.
She is a doll. Thanks for posting pic.

Star -- here is "Joey" in plantfiles. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/177746/
I have lots of salvia farinacae (sp?) but for the life of me have not been able to find or harvest seeds. You would think it would be similar to other salvias, but the bloom form is different from the coccineas and greggiis so I can't just get them from the calyxes like on the others. Any suggestions?
Tonya
Here is a pretty good site to help with gathering seeds, doesn't have them all.http://theseedsite.co.uk/seedpods.html
Karen: I was out this afternoon checking some of my plants and my Salvia farinacea do indeed have a few seeds, so I will have just a few that I can share this year.
I bought some joey ptilotus seeds last year from Hazzard's online and Parks also offered them. My plants didn't make it, but I always save a seed or two for reference. I dug mine out and they are round - about the size of a pinhead, and dark brown. Hope that helps. That being said, I should never have gotten my seeds out because it never fails when I start looking through them I get the awfulest plantin fever you have ever seed. I could go out in the dark right now and start digging. Drat! Maybe it will fire me up to get the rest of these seeds cleaned :)
Hope this helps tcs

Well, what do you know. I tried to get seeds from the salvia farinacea again and tried something with them that I hadn't tried on them before. Those little buggers can hide from me, but not from Mr. Sieve! Got some and will most likely get more. So those of y'all that are looking for those be sure to check out my list when I post it. They are the 'blue bedder' variety. Also got a very few seeds off of my salvia mexicana 'limelight' and hope to get more of those as well. Still watching for some on my salvia 'chiquita'. No luck on that one yet. I am going to have quite a selection of salvia seeds to choose from for those of you piggies that like that flavor or slop!
BTW - thanks Jnette for reminding me about that site. It has been a few weeks since I have been on it.
Tonya
>>I dug mine out and they are round - about the size of a pinhead, and dark brown.
thanks... i'll poke around in there tomorrow... there certainly is A LOT of fluff to sort thru.
Tonya, do you think the salvia limelight and chiquita would be ok as an annual? Did they grow well and flower the first year from seed?
When I was looking up salvia chiquita I had to laught at this description: "For those gardening in the later frosting zones, or those growing large containers in the arctic, S. 'Blue Chiquita' is a real winner! " (from Plant Delight nursery).
I think there will be several of us pushing and shoving at your Salvia Trough. lol
Tonya... How you doing yours with Mr. Sieve?
I got sag eplants out there of Salvia greggii ' Flame" but so far haven't foudn any seeds unles s i missing them somewhere. Don't thes eplants knwo they suppose d ot make seed and make it easy for us nature helpers to gather and dispers e them? Gonan have o have a nos eot bloom talk with them. LOL
