Cottage Garden Seed Swap and Chat #42

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

ive got like 20 packs right now 10 of each but so far thats all i have and hoping for a few more but mine wont be very much

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh Therese, how I envy you math people. I guess it's that right-brain / left-brain thing. I can spend 15 minutes to get an A on an English paper, but I am not exagerating when I tell you that I'm spending 50-60 hours a week studying math (and it's only PRE-al).

I just told Jnette that if I didn't already have seeds packed and ready to go I'd probably drop out of the swap. But it's just too much fun, so I'll jump in if, when, and where I can. Has there been an END date set? I'm probabally going to have to use the time between quarters to send my contributions to Star so I'm betting my portion of the swap will probably end before the rest of you finish.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I know I should be cleaning seeds instead of being on here Ha! I'd have everything cleaned by now! I haven't even started bagging and tagging yet I'm soo slow! And some of these seeds! Tne seed has taken about four days for me to clean I hate it when they are so small of course it didn't help forgetting to collect them and most of them were knocked out by the rain so I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel on them lol This rain has really been hard on my seed collecting this year.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

imzadi... Don't worry how manyya have or don't have. That not what this swap is about. Ya cna join with only a couple of kind sof seed. You share what you have available and oink yoruself silly getting new seed to grow and hopefulyl next year you wil have some beautiful gardens and be able to collect and have thinsg for next year to add.

When ya run out of yoru stuff, just sit back and oink and fill yoru bucket up. : )

What may do well in yoru garden next year may not do well in someone elses cuz of weather, bugs and mothe r nature interferoing and then someone else wil have seed to contiue things on.

newbies aren't expected to have much. Soem folks liek me. have abunch of this and that and need to clean out fridges and so this piggy swap is the plac e ot pass them on.

I have Pansy sed of so many kinds otu the piggy trough. Some packs have ltos of seed some have few seeds, but it all getting throwed in the trough wher e maybe somebody else cna use them.

The weather playingheck on evrybody. I got seed otu there but not sure how well it gonan do with the frezign temps here. We just do what we can, throw it all in the pot and just enjoy ourselves.

Trust me no piggy shall go hungry heheheheheh

Oh and while I thinkign about it. For our newbie s here that might not knwo and regular piggie s that may have forgotten too.

This is one of the things that happened last year. Let's try and not send me on a eagle hunt again this year. HAHAHAHAHAH : )

" Ok, fess up who did it!!!!!!!!! Who wanted me to go crazier than I already am???????? Ya know who ya are!!!! So quit hiding behind your trough. ; ) LOL

I been goign crazy out of my midn for over two days now. I had turned the one kitchen light off in kitchen and then went to living room couch and I starte dhearign this nois e that sounds like the sound of the computr keys when ya hit them. Click ..Click.. Click... I woudlgetup and try and hear the soudn again and all would be quiet. I bene up and down and all aroudn the kitchen checking stove, fridge and puter and electric plugs, wondering whatit could be and praying nothign else was going on the fritz.

Well went to heat me cup of coffee up and there I heard it again. Started to move away from microwave trying to walk sideways between the table sset up in kitchen , and then I heard it again.

I listened and got my eagle eye going liek crazy tryign to figure out where noise was coming from.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! Found it.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I not goign insane. Somebody must have packed seeds in pod sof some sort and they slowly openign up in the baggy they in and hittign the sides of the black plastic container to make the echo louder.

Whew!!!!!!! Now I can relax finally. : ) "

Shot from last year for newbies of buckets starting to fill up. Start drooling folks. LOL

Good golly, y'all have left me in the dust while I've been away... trying to catch up from the last thread... :-)

Don't worry, once we're underway I know better than to go 2 days without checking in, much less 2 weeks! LOL

Ridesredmule, I loved the photo of you with your big white lily! Some of the most beautiful smiles I've ever seen have been here on DG, and yours is definitely one of the best -- you just sparkle!

Now I have to check PF and see if that Chinese Trumpet Lily is hardy here... Oh, joy, PF says hardy to zone 3! Some of the tallest ones in my "mixed oriental lilies" are white like that... very fragrant, also. :-)

Stevia can be tricky from seed.. low germination % and slow growing seedlings. Bottom heat helps. I would spend $5 for a plant rather than $5 for a few seeds in a commercial pack.

Pamsue, I hope you got some seeds from your wild phlox -- sounds lovely!

Before we left, I did a check for columbine seeds... I guess I am going to have a lot of volunteer seedlings out there next year, as I was far too late to get the seeds! Oops. I won't be a major player in this year's swap, I'm afraid, but I'll come up with a couple of things to share anyway. And it's just the best swap around for great chats! :-)

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

I do appreciate anyone that has put my name on seeds that I expressed an interest in. Please know however that I don't expect that, I was really just letting folks know I am interested so they know to go ahead and collect the seeds. I am perfectly happy to wait and take my chances in the mad rush! Especially since I am not organized enough yet to track anyone interested in my seeds. Getting there though! Will probably spend some time today making labels to go inside the seed packets. Mine will be purely functional due to time constraints. I woke up this morning realizing how busy November is going to be! I'd better get as much done in October as I can. Star, you've probably mentioned this, but I have forgotten. When do you think we will need to have our package of seeds in the mail to you? Just planning ahead!

Tonya

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Rides. The fair was ok, just bought a coupel of Christmas gifts and was on the road longer up there than I was at it. Wasn't a bad day though, got otu and saw somethign other than here.

Tonya. Mien are too. Too much to do. Mien get scientific and common name and that it. Ya have to hunt for info or ask her e on out chat thread how to grow.

Packages won't start beign sent in til December. Soem folsk that don't have much wil send their s in when all thir seeds have been oiekd for and they have their extras and wish lists doen and soem will go past the date to have sent in just becaus e of things goign on or they have more stuf f that gets doen late and they want to offer up. We shoot for right before Christmas, but it was beginign of January before folks got all done. Think it was around January 12 th before all wa s in sorte d and became flyign piggies.

Critter.. I knwo ya busy with yoru new baby, so whatver you don't have time for you cna just do liek some did last year. Just put in bag and don't worry abotu chaf or nothing, and I wil seperate em out here and list em up for ya. They don't the fancy [packaging you do, but think folks understand and want what inside. LOL new babaie s take a lot of work and as this yoru first Christmas with yoru daughter I sure ya gonan be busy.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL... I nay not have the chance to collect much this year, but what I send will be packed & labeled as usual... my labels are mostly done from previous years anyway.

I appreciate your offer, but I'm not gonna send you more work!

:-)

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Gonna have to send of a pic. of that baby,
inquiring piggy's want to see how she
os growing. Huh?? will ya, Huh???
I know she a pretty baby. Ain't NO
ugly babies.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Jeez, go away for a weekend even, and have a time catching up around here ;-) Saw the most beautiful little woodpecker on our camping trip! No seeds though... ah well :)

TCS, I've got my eye on this white Zinnia from Summerhills if the coop happens! http://summerhillseeds.com/zinnia-wedding-bells-white-new-for-2009-p-746.html

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

KL -- oooooo, purty!! i just may have to do the Co-Op to get some.

though i have to admit... many of my seeds from last years Summerhill Co-Op did not do much.
zip on the Black Current Hollyhocks, only 1 germination on the Electric Blue Pennstimon [sp] and the MG that I ordered came out a different color than was on the package....

I did Think Robin [Summerhill owner] did a great job on the packets and has a wonderful selection...

I will have to think about it.

Terese

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Wow, that's some tough luck. I had good germination with just about everything I think. I ordered Abutilon, Asarina Scandens, Begonia (3), Browallia, Crossandra, Dahlia (2), Devil's Trumpet, Geranium, Gloriosa Vine, Morning Glory, Lobelia, Nigella, Petunia, Jasmine, Verbena, Verbena, Vinca, Zinnia, Columbine, Carnation, Balloon Flower, Primrose, Daisy... sorry just one name each :) But the only ones that didn't germinate were the yellow ballerina datura, which I've heard can be tough, and the red jewel nigella. Did have some trouble with keeping some of the others alive, but that's on me :)

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Oh, that is a most beautiful baby. Makes you just want to hug and kiss her.
I love to kiss baby's on their beautiful soft hair. so sweet. Please give
her a kiss for me. Thanks
Thaanks , Terese for the link. (((()))) hugs to you too

Polkton, NC(Zone 7b)

Congratulations on your beautiful daughter. Its been a long time since I first held my daughter in my arms, but I remember every detail like it was this morning. God bless your family.

Southborough, MA(Zone 6a)

It was raining this morning so I sat down and did 100 more baggies of seed (16 types). By the time I got done, it was snowing. Yes, I said it, SNOWING!

Snow in Oct is rare for New England. Sadly, our growing season is over. :(

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, it's been a dismal day here in eastern MA! Pouring this morning, then the snow. Wind and cold. It seems the snow has stopped, and none has collected on the ground (knock on wood), but it was supposed to be the last community garden workday of the season and potluck. Was also going to plant the lily bulbs that arrived yesterday. Like you did Patricia, I also bagged up some seeds, but not nearly so ambitious. Geez, the leaves haven't even fallen yet and it feels like mid-winter.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, y'all! I'm going to try to get photos downloaded this evening so I can start a new thread for her with current pics. We just got back last night from a nice long vacation with family in NC. :-)

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

>>Yes, I said it, SNOWING!

yes -- I see that, as i watch the Pats obliterate the Titans. how sad... and not that the Pats are winning, but the score.
I enjoy a close game, not an annihilation.... but there is no other game to watch.

We were on our afternoon walk, and when we went past this one lot, DH said.... didnt you want some of those seeds??

so i grabbed some B.E.S heads. i'll have to look up the name, but they are the nice compact plant, more like an Echinacea foliage-wise.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Hey ya'll,

One of my DG buddies, Jeanette, is a Piggy Swap newbie this year. She's a little uncertain of how the swap progresses, and although I've been trying to explain it to her, I've not been around much lately. I suggested she just pop over and soak up some atmosphere, so when she drops in please give her your usual friendly welcome. I told her what a great group of folks you all are and that she needn't feel timid if she has some questions about the swap (or anything else for that matter.)

...and now back to the math....

Polkton, NC(Zone 7b)

Welcome Jeanette and also DASIYS another newbie to swaps. Hope you have a blast.

Lala -- is that "Jnette"?

Kannapolis, NC

I'm here, y'all, and wallowing right in the mud with everyone else this rainy weekend! We went to the mountains on Friday and yesterday over into Tenn., from Asheville to Jonesborough, Johnson City, Bristol and back. Along the way we had snow flurries and coming back saw snow on the mountains. This is very early for us, even our mountains! Going to be a tough winter, I'm afraid.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Tcs.,, Nope it not Jnette. Don't remmebre what Jeanette's hadnel is off hand. Don't have the name s of all the new folks down yet.

Hemophobic... Awwwwwwwww to bad ya had to hit rain and snow. Fall in th emoutnains with trees turnign would have been beautiful to see. But gla d ya made it back safely.

Jeanette

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

BTW, thanks for the intro La. Jeanette

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Welcome, Jeanette! Glad to have ya join us!

While KimM had to drop from the swap, she had seeds already set aside for it, and will be sending them to me to share with you fellow Piggies :-)

Several things happening at once around here. I had wedding flowers to do this weekend, got most of the design work done Friday. Then got the call Saturday morning that Mom had passed (Mom's name was Jeanette too, by the way). I held it together and got the wedding decorations done Saturday, then met up with family at Mom's house. Picked up flowers at Sams Club yesterday to do Mom's casket spray, and will work on that this morning. And then the temps dropped this weekend, and I hadn't gotten the first plant in. I was thinking I may lose most of it, and really didn't care much either, but we had a chance to jump in yesterday and get most brought in. We have funeral home visitation this evening and the funeral tomorrow.

Looking forward to getting back in the garden later this week- seed sorting and planting daffodil bulbs will be good therapy.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Neil,

Gemini,

My prayers are with you and your family.

Brownstown, IN(Zone 5b)

Neal My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Although it has been 10 years since my parents passed I still miss them and so many things remind me of them. My Mom was a gardener but it was for food and I always thought when I was a kid that she worked too hard at it. When I became a gardener I realized where that desire to work at gardening came from. It's hard work but the rewards far outweigh it.
My condolences
Veronica

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

My deepest sympathies, Neal. I lost my Mother many yrs. ago, but still think of things I forgot to ask or write down. She was a great gardener, flowers and veggies.
It will get better, but rest assured it does take time.

Maxine

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Seandor could you please help us with growing roses from seed? That rose is beautiful. Hard to believe it bloomed the first year!! I have several roses with hips on them. When do you pick them from the plant? When do you plant them? Do you let them dry? Help!! Would love to try it.

Also, was that rose an own root? Must have been to turn out like that, but I guess if they had used it as a graft it still could have.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Neal, I add my condolences to the others expressed. So sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my prayers.

Tonya

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Is this a white zinnia???
Also have some pink ones.
But they are still blooming their little hearts out.
So will have to wait to get seeds.

I too am so sorry Neal. That is a real tough loss. I lost my mom several years ago, but you know, I still talk to her when I am in the garden working. I ask her questions and normally the answer will come to me. She was a really good gardener. She loved her roses.

(Zone 7a)

Neal, sending you and your family my sympathies. I am so sorry for your loss.

Rides, that is an exquisite vignette
