Oh, yes. You can see the babies coming up cute. Pretty pic with
the Bouganvilla.
I'm going to try to Bonsai a Bouganville. Got my start too.
How long before you get MG blooms?

Melbourne, FL

I have some blooms coming on a few already.....probably will have the first open in a few days.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I know they will be great.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

gardenpom, I am so glad you are growing morning glorys now.. I look forward to your blooms... mine are winding down hard and fast outside, so sad.. a few blooms from die hard I. Purps here and there, and even rebecca on the north fence is showing what a tuff little gal she is.. Setosa is still blooming but messina creeper got too cold and has wilted.. good thing, I was about to set it a fire..

You mean, with a match? Burn it down?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

LOL.. yeps.. it is a dainty little vine, but eats anything in its path..

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - Your blue vase from Pauline sounds really unusual in shape! That is great that you are getting cuttings from Lobata to root! What a great idea! Love your 3 pumpkins photo! Cozy little spot on the porch there! :-) LOL! about burning up the messina creeper! I would hate to see how invasive that vine would be in my zone! Eeek!

Jackie - Your Fuji no Sora blooms are just beautiful! Glad to see them still blooming for you!

Charleen, Debra, and Jackie - I think most people that grow a lot of MGs have those No ID packets of seeds! I have some every year that I am not sure which vine they came from so they go into the NOID baggie! :-) Nothing wrong with surprises! :-)

Jackie - Have fun with the NOID grow-outs! :-) A good winter project!

gardenpom - Nice Bouganvillea! Are they frost hardy? I look forward to your bloom photos as I know they will be great!

Charleen - Good luck with creating and growing a Bouganvillea Bonsai. I love mine!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

don't know if you remembered I had planted a Devils Claw morning glory and a Blue dawn.... the Blue Dawn has still not bloomed and it is in a hanging basket. I think I will cut it and bring it in for the winter. The devils claw had long stems and growths, but only now was getting buds... so I cut the ends off after untangling it from the bushes on the south fence. the roots are in the ground, and since I have no clue as to whether they will withstand the cold here or not, I covered the bottom of the plant up with a pot of prenniels. We will see. The long cuttings are in the outside water tub, and I will most likely bring in some of it to see if it will root, since the original plants I got were rooted cuttings.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - Did you post a photo of Devil's Claw somewhere already? I don't know what that is?

You could also try rooting cuttings of your Blue Dawn. I'd be interested in swapping rooted cuttings, if you are game.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, thanks. I should have clarified that my No sora blooms are
from early Aug. I wish it was still blooming. I might try one of these for winter, I need fresh seeds.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Becky , yes somewhere on one of these threads I posted a picture of my devils claw..
sure rooted swap a go..

Melbourne, FL

Bouganvillea must be pretty cold-safe here, Becky. I see a lot of them that are older plants around. At the worst they probably drop their leaves or need a little cutting back in spring.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - I think you should definitely try growing a Fuji no Sora during the winter! Bring a little cheer to the cold days ahead! :-) Did you not get many seeds from the one you grew in August?

Debra - Got some cuttings in the blue vase! :-) I remember you mentioning the Devil's Claw, but can't remember how it looked.

gardenpom - Thanks! Most plants in the ground here will probably over-winter just fine since we usually have mild winters, but I am trying to decide what to do with my Bouganvillea Bonsai. Being in a shallow pot, I am thinking I need to bring it in and put it on the window sill vs. leaving it to chance outside should we get a hard freeze. It's the only Bouganvillea plant I have in my yard.

The weather here got rather cool over the weekend. Though it is already warming up tonight. (sigh) It was nice while it lasted. I believe we are now into the beginning of Fall in southeast Florida. :-)

The good news ... I've had 2 days of blooms on a couple of my outdoor vines. When I say 2 days ... I mean the blooms lasted TWO days!!! LOL! No kidding! The colder weather seemed to retard their wilting for two whole days! Isn't that something? I went from having blooms in the very early morning hours until about 10 am when most of them wilt, to having blooms open for 2 days! LOL! Though the color of the blooms did change by the end of the first day. But they stayed open until this afternoon. I can't help but wonder if they would have continued to stay open if the weather hadn't started warming up again! I guess I will never know ...

Here is Sazanami blooms after two days right as they started to wilt late this afternoon after I got home from work. The color went from lavender to pink. You can see the brownish edges from aging and the colder weather. I got such a kick out of seeing those same blooms for a couple of days! :-)

This is the blooms on Diluted Fuji no Muraski. They stopped showing the white spokes and edging several weeks ago. Now they are just solid blue blooms. But by day two of staying open, they had turned to this purple color. I took this picture late this afternoon before they finally wilted.

In this last photo is the I. indica. The blooms went from that beautiful blue color all day the first day to looking purple all day today. They, too, finally wilted as the sun was setting tonight. The cold weather didn't seem to bother the newly forming buds on this vine either. Looks like it's going to continue to bloom for awhile! Love plants that keep on blooming like there is no tomorrow! :-)

Becky, that is so cool.. my blue morning glory I planted and took down to the water tub is vining away on a trellis and blooming, but there is like splashes of pink and fuchia on the blue blooms now.. didn't get a pic. They look really weird.. lol
The devils claw is a morning glory that came from gworfia vines along with the blue dawn.. I am guessing the leaf is what makes the name, I couldn't find a morning glory called devils claw, but she has that name on it.. the leaves look like claws on the bottom. Been sorting out seeds and packaging them all night.. whew, only about 3000 more to go LOL (morning glorys ) I haven't even started on all the other seeds to clean and package up, they are all drying in boxes and newspaper everywhere.. Poor Joe..
Fuzzy picture, but blooming inside

Love all your blooms Debra.

Nice purple on DFNM Becky. I had a few
2 day blooms too due to the cooler weather.
I never potted up my Mt Fuji no Sora from the 3 inch pot so only got a few sds. Just another indication that I started more m glories than I could handle.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - Thanks! The purple color change on the DFNM does look pretty. That's neat that you also had long-lasting blooms because of the temp change in the weather. :-) The temps are already climbing back up there today.

I have been working on a garden project at the school. It will be a new butterfly garden in our old class garden beds. I am building an arched arbor out of cattle panel fencing and wood posts to grow Passiflora on. It's going to look nice when it is all done and I hope it will attract about 8 - 10 different butterfly species. :-)

I know what you mean about over-doing it with too many MG vines in a single season grow-out.

Debra - I LOVE your indoor garden rooms! WOW WEE!!! You are so lucky to have the space to do all of that! No wonder your yard looks so wonderful every Spring/Summer. You already have the majority of the plants going strong indoors and they just take off once they are moved back outside for the warmer months. Love that unusual blue vase you are rooting Lobata in! Way cool!

Yeah ... the seed collecting and bagging is the boring part of growing and trading MG seeds! LOL! It's such a chore and so time consuming...

Your small pink specked vine looks awesome! I hope you get more blooms on that baby!

Do you make compost tea for your garden beds and potted plants?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

compost tea.. hmm nope.. i just use Kens Mix on everything in my sprayer, and I throw down the coffee grounds, and compost from the compost pile out back about four times in the summer. I walk around and haul it and just throw it on everything and then water. LOL

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - LOL! I do the exact same thing! LOL! I guess it is just a different way to make Compost Tea, huh? LOL!

What a great idea with the garden at school, Becky. I hope the children will become involved in caring for it too.

aww so pretty, Gardenpom.. I went outside today in the misty rain, and saw a few I. purps and shibouris and even a tiny rebecca blooming.. poor things , they just won't give up.. I missed the Alata out front, it had climbed the rose bush and bloomed about 6 times, small dainty blooms... it is all shruveled up from the cold spell now.. dang it.. but the good news is, I started that one from seed. I do have a healthy alata growing downstairs.. no blooms on that one yet.
Gardenpom, what kinds of morning glories have you planted?

Melbourne, FL

The only one I am sure of is Heavenly Blue. Others are a variety of seeds given to me by someone here. I tried to start mostly blue shades.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

good for you and for us! I love shades of Blue and can't wait to see them as they go..

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

gardenpom - The school garden project is turning out quite nice. It is going to be a butterfly dual garden. Two 8' x 8' raised beds. I will get photos soon. I will be planting enough host and nectar plants to hopefully attract at least 8 - 10 different butterflies. It is for our class and other classes here at the school to study the life cycle of butterflies. But we will also be planting seeds in Spring for our Plant theme as well.

I (and my dh) made an arched trellis arbor for $25 using a cattle panel and 4 posts. Turned out great. I had to buy enough material to make two of these arches, so one is going to be built for my backyard. Very inexpensive and sturdy and perfect for growing Passiflora vines on for the Gulf Fritillaries and Zebra Longwing butterflies and caterpillars! :-) The two garden beds we built several years ago, but they needed a major overhaul which I did one afternoon (after work) and then my dh and I built the arbor in one of the beds. It will look very nice once all the plants are in. Which will be soon! I've gotten a lot of compliments on the arbor. :-) I am really excited that it looks great and was very inexpensive to build. :-)

Your blue bloom is very pretty!!! Is that the Heavenly Blue? I've never grown that species before. I will be watching for more photos of your vine! I can't help but wonder if we are going to have a warm winter this year. We hit record highs yesterday for this time of year. :-)

Debra - That's awesome that your outdoor vines are still hanging on and blooming! They must love your yard! :-) Maybe they are protected by other plants from the cold?
