Don't squeeze them. Those babies are going to open soon! When a bud gets to the stage yours are at, pretty much nothing can go wrong. So just enjoy the anticipation.

Wow Dominic, very pretty!

Dominic, very nice! Lin, you are getting very creative with with those musical notes. I think you are now the go to person for fancy computer stuff.

Just beautiful!!! Now that the flower is starting to open I can see the relationship between magnifica and australis....thanks for mentioning the scent--I'm always curious about that...I'm hoping really hard that I get some of those sometime :-)

Vern nice Dominic! Love that bloom and so glad to hear about the fragrance with that one! I love the scent of both Freesia and Jasmine so I can't wait to someday see my magnifica in bloom!

Doug, LOL ... I saw someone on another forum last year using all the cute musical notes and other little symbols and asked how to do it. They told me there are free downloads of stuff like that but to check on my computer settings and there should be something like that. Well, I found something called character palette and it doesn't offer many symbols and most are so tiny they don't show up. The musical notes are about the only ones I use. I never did check about the free downloads.

I love the scent, too. Someone who smelled it thought it smelled like baby's wet diapers which I don't get at all!!!

(Zone 1)

Ewww ... maybe that person had a weird sense of smell??

Teguise, Spain

I have a friend who always says' eww, cats pee' everytime he smells a Hoya..drives me mad..maybe he only says it to wind me up

How lovely Domenic! Have you measured one of the flowers now that they're open?

My DH says that hoya flowers smell toxic, swears they make his eyes burn and his throat swell. I call him a drama queen because despite his ails he can somehow sleep in the room with a flowering hoya...lol

Congratulations Pdoyle, keep those photos coming - you're almost there. I think many of these Hoya blossoms would make really cool time-lapse videos. You can almost predict when some of these things will open; so setting up a video camera would be pretty easy.

Doug

How lovely!! Keep those pictures coming, I for one can't get enough....sigh...if only mine would fast forward a couple of years...lol

I keep looking at mine every day in hopes of spotting a peduncle forming!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

warm warm warm and bright indirect light. I hung my H. magnifica out on a tree in the spring and we have had 6 months of rain. There has to be 15 umbels on the vine and it is happy as a clam!!! Warm will do it...and the light!!!!!

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

@ work so can't "talk" long - It is fully open (the one bud) this morning, took a pic, will post tonight. The smell? When I sniffed this morning ... I thought of a new band aid smell. Maybe it will smell different tonight. I don't care if it smells like poo. I love the flowers!

"Warm, warm, warm" That is definitely my problem then - temperature never gets out of the 60s in the room where I have the plant. Have to do something different next year.

Well, my H. magnifica is not just warm, but Hot, Hot, Hot! It stays out on my pool deck 10 months of the year, in a lot of all day sun, filtered by the screen enclosure. This summer has seen many, many days of 90º+ temperatures. I am the world's worst about fertilizing though, so maybe if I fed it on a regular basis I could entice it to show some sign of flowering.

I did attribute the new growth this summer as having to do with feeding. I mixed up a batch of that beer formula fertilizer I had been reading about on here and fed everything a couple of times in May and June ... then as usual, got lazy and haven't done it since. I need to feed my orchids so I might just give the hoya's a shot of the orchid bloom booster at the same time, I'm sure they might appreciate a little snack!

I was pretty excited when I first saw all the growth after using the beer fertilizer but then realized the plants would have new new growth with ANY feeding ... poor things were probably starving for a bit of nutrition! I'm doubtful I will continue with the measuring and mixing of all the stuff required in the beer formula ... and I think the sugar in the molasses attracts ants! It's just so much easier for me, and cleaner, to use something already mixed that I can buy at the store and dilute with water!

Well, I need to get off this computer, feed the fish, and go out and mow the lawn and do yard work (Ugh!)

I hope everyone has a great Thursday!

Something to look forward to pdoyle.....This hoya reminds me of an Easter Lillie

You would know the buds are faceing the window and are not easy to turn. It is a challenge to get a good pic.

Forgot to add. The smell is much better now I think. I think is a heavy musk scent to me.

Beautiful!

... I think I will go outside and sing to mine for awhile! ♫♩♬♭♫♫♪

Or, maybe NOT! ^_^

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

There IS a good reason it was named H. magnifica.
