Wow! I guess there is no doubt about H. magnifca being a fall bloomer now. We should have a lot of magnifica blooms on the forum in the near future.

Congrats! So exciting ... can't wait to see what the blooms look like, and isn't it supposed to be fragrant? I love the pic of the buds in your second photo ... veyr pretty!
... ok, going outside to stare at my magnifica now, do you think that will make it produce a peduncle or two? ^_^ My plant has really put on growth this year and I can't wait for it to bloom!
I think you should talk to it Lin, they like the warm fuzzy feeling of being cared for. I talk to mine, play music for them and sit in the swing with morning coffed on the weekends with them. They aren't plants they are people at least that is what I tell them. Of course now when they sulk I refuse to talk to them. They snap out of it.

I agree with Dee! I pay some attention to mine almost daily. DH thinks i have a problem. I just say "I'm home everynight aren't I?" I will say this, it took FOREVER for the bud to develope. I noticed 'something" around mid summer and kept watching it to see if it was a peduncle or another shoot starting. When I brought them in b/c of the cool nights, did I notice i actually had buds!
Since, I just got mine a couple weeks ago, thanks Carol, it is a rooted plant but I don't think I will see anything till next spring/summer, hoping anyway.

Yes....H. magnifica (along with it's cousins, calycina, albiflora, aff. albiflora, AH0240 (and more?)) are fall bloomers. My magnifica is hanging out in a tree and I am looking forward to tons of blooms (per the little peduncles)....

Someone said magnifica is a fall bloomer so maybe there's still hope for mine since it's not fall here yet ... it was 90º here again today but we are supposed to be in the mid to upper 70's over the weekend! Maybe that will boost my magnifica into thinking it's time to start blooming!
Oh, and I forgot to talk to mine ... will begin a conversation with it tomorrow!

H. australis is blooming for me now, too. Same family... They are all starting to gt fat peduncles...the H. magnifica is ahead of them by alot!!!
Gee...I dunno. Mine actually are that big...but I have never seen another.... I hope it's not just Hawaii....

Where is your plant located, and under what kind of conditions is it being grown? The peduncles on mine have completely stopped growing. I am thinking that it is either too cold or too dry for my magnifica. I would like to know to see if I could possibly move mine to a more favorable spot to help it along.

Doug...it's my experience that group of hoyas like room around their feet, for some readon. I remember having some aff. albiflora in small pots not growing, and when I bumped them up they took off. They also like ample water and food...and WARM and bright indirect light. I think that the furry leaves of plants help difuse the sunlight off their leaves.... Hope this helps....
Thanks Carol, I really think mine is no longer warm enough, and there is little temperture differential between night and day. I finally learned not to let this one dry out. It is in a large pot, and the plant itself looks fantastic, but I think its bloom cycle has been stopped in its tracks. I may try to move it into my plant room with grow lights, but I really don't have the room for it in there. I don't think magnifica is the easiest plant to get to bloom in typical home conditions. If I remember right, I think Christine from myhoyas.com got hers to bloom one time, and then never again. Well anyhow, it is a challenge, and I will keep plugging away with it. If it doesn't happen this year, maybe next year.

I have mine in a west facing window. I have shears in the window. it's a big bay window. It gets warm in there in the afternoon. I water mine weekly or if they feel really dry now that I've brought it in. I did have mine hanging outside in a mimosa tree all spring & summer. I only watered then when I knew we hadn't had any raing for a while. It is by no means root bound as it is only from a cutting one or two years old.

Should I be feeding the ones getting ready to bloom? I noticed peduncles on Iris Marie and my Imparilis var Rauschii (pardon the spelling)
Doug--also note that in an earlier post in this thread pdoyle said it seemed "to take FOREVER" for the buds to develop from the peduncle...mine is also moving at a snail's pace...don't give up!!
Plants getting ready to bloom are IN ACTIVE growth. I would only cut back and not fertilize when plants go dormant, which never happens here.

Today 10/18 - I'm wondering if the weather was sunny and the room warmer would it had opened by now.
I know! DH doesn't understand why I keep standing by that plant all the time.

So exciting, it looks like it could open any minute! It's hard to wait, isn't it? My pubicalyx RHP has it's very first buds getting close to opening and I keep going outside and checking - so afraid of missing it!

Those buds look like they will open very, very soon. Here is my magnifica; the buds have yellowed and fallen off - so I will really enjoy your photos, because that is as close as I will get to a flower this year.

Wow .. Doug, that is a great looking plant! I look forward to someday having my plant be that large and pretty. I took a cutting from mine this morning, to share with another DG'er. I'm hoping next year I will see a peduncle or two and possibly those gorgeous blooms!
pdoyle: How are those buds looking this afternoon? They sure looked close to opening in the last photo you posted.
They are ready to pop! I can't stand it. I get home, go straight in there to look at it and it's the first thing I go to when I get home. It is so ready to open I just want to give it a "little" squeeze. I am restraining myself here!
