October Flowers

Ridesredmule, Alohahoya was responding to SRQHoyas. Your hoya is named what I said.

It might need a bit more soil if water is just running right through. Hoyas, carnosas especially, do need a good soaking between drying out. Or perhaps you could let it sit in a dish of water for an hour to water it.

Christine is too right! If the water runs through immediately, it is not being absorbed = roots/potting mix too dry and can't absorb OR the roots have choked all the potting mix out and are filling the pot tightly...no room. Time to pot up or to soak the pots for a while.

Here is H. pentaphlebia growing on a Monkeypod tree. Lots of blooms...

HAHAHA and a clearer picture of H. acuta from Kota Kinabalu...

Very nice Carol; your hoyas growing up trees are a true joy to see even in pictures.

I soak her sometimes for a few minutes. You think it will grow better if I put
Krimson Princess in a pot? If I do I bet I soak it to get it out of that seashell.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

IF it "ain't broke, don't fix it" is my rule. I have thought a plant with roots hanging from the pot would like to be all potted up together...so I repotted and killed it...my huge H. motoskei!!! When/if you do repot her, I would break the seashell to get the roots released...then soak the roots then pot up but don't mess with the roots..and only go up a tiny bit.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Heck, I might just leave her where she is.
When she blooms I'll get you a pic. i love
to take pic of my flowers.

After about a month or so break H golamcoina 'Los Banos' is back on the job flowering.

It's surprising how different it looks with a bit of backlighting from the sun.

That is so neat. The color change is fantastic..

Here is H. hellwigiana with an early October bloom. Only looks like this for one day, by day three, it is completely over with.

Here is Hoya lamingtoniae in bloom. I think this is a great little Hoya for anyone who can give it warmth and humidity. Before I moved it into my plant room, this thing would sit dormant for 8 months per year.

Dormant for 8 months, I think the poor thing needs to move to FL, LOL. I just love the color of those flowers.

Thanks Dee; I think I need to move to Florida!

Carol: That is so cool seeing pentaphlebia growing up the tree!

Tropic: The backlit photo of your golamcoina 'Los Banos' is really pretty!

Doug: That is such a nice bloom on hellwigiana but even if the bloom doesn't last long, the foliage is really stunning! Your H. lamingtoniae is a wonderful looking Hoya too! The Plant Files database really needs photo's of H. lamingtoniae: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/185239/ At present there is only one photo close up of a bloom so I hope you will consider adding your pictures of both bloom and entire plant. Great growing!

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Thanks Lin! I will try to add a picture or two to plant files.

Hey Doug, we have plenty of room down here, come on down. And talk about humidity, today you can't breathe, temps are only 87 but it is nearly 100% humidity. I love the heat but I can't stand it when it is like this, I can't breathe so I can't go outside. Uugh, you guys down south doing ok or are you worse than we are today?

Dee

(Zone 1)

Hey, I have an idea - we could do a temporary residence trade! You and your wife could spend some time in Florida and my husband and I could go to Vermont, where we've never been. Doesn't that sound like a great plan? I'd love to spend fall in the Northeast! What a great trade that would be. But, I wouldn't wish this heat and humidity on anyone! It's currently 93ºF here and as Dee stated the humidity is way up there too! I just got back from running around town doing errands ... was gone almost three hours and was totally wilted by the time I walked back in the door. Aaaah ... air conditioning! Maybe I will pour myself a large glass of iced tea and go jump in the pool to cool off!

Dee, is Chipley near the west coast, near the gulf? I know I've heard that name but just can't place where exactly it is. I'm in Daytona Beach and I know the gulf area is usually a lot warmer than the atlantic side of the state.

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Wow Ladies! I don't think I could stand that kind of heat index. It is hard to believe that it is that darned hot there when it is around 52 degrees here. The folliage is at its peak here right now along with all of the leaf peepers that those colored leaves bring. I complain a lot about the cold cloudy weather here in VT, but I'm not sure I could live any where else.

Doug

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Lin, Chipley is about 30 miles north of Panama City, I am not on the coast but pretty close. Difference is there is almost always a breeze here on the coast (where I work) but it is usually hotter with almost no breeze at home. The heat doesn't really bother me just when the humidity gets really high. I was born and raised in the south but spent 12 years in DC, hated it. Back where I belong now.

Dee

(Zone 1)

Our high today was 94º! That is just too darned hot! I'm about a mile from the coast and we do get breezes from the Atlantic (if there happens to be wind) but this humidity is just waaay too much! The heat and humidity never bothered me when I was young but the older I get the more difficult it is to tolerate. It really is draining. I hope when my husband decides to retire we can live in N.C. or Tennessee for the summer months and come back to Florida to spend the winter .. having the best of both worlds!

Doug, 52º sounds heavenly for night time but a bit cool for daytime temp's (for this southern gal anyway!) LOL. I want days of @ 75 or so, and NO humidity, and I'd love nights in the 40's!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Its about 76 degrees here (at noon), humidity at about 49 and the nighttime temps in the mid 60s. Not bad!!!! I sleep with 2 blankets all summer...in the winter I add a down comforter.

(Zone 1)

Aaah, I knew Hawaii was Heaven!!

hmm ... wonder if my DH would consider retiring to Hawaii? He loves scuba diving and boats. I love balmy weather, beautiful scenery and tropical plants ... so it sounds like a good idea to me. ^_^

North Augusta, ON

well...it's 34F here, cold and rainy...we've already had 3 frosts. Anybody wanna trade homes for a couple of months? any seasonally challenged folks out there who'd love to experience a Canadian winter? say...January and February?

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Sorry 3g, tempting as Canada is, I am allergic to the cold and snow, LOL.

Dee

(Zone 1)

um ... Fall definitely, Winter with ice and snow ... NO WAY! 34º is Cold!

I just went and checked the thermostat and our outside temperature right now is 85º, and it's still very humid.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Freeze your rumpus deleti off up there. think I'll just suffer down here.
Were you born up there? Brrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

North Augusta, ON

yup...born up here. This is nothing, not even jacket weather yet. Come January when it hits -35F...well, then it's cold. Nothing like having your nose freeze shut when you take a breath!! or wet hair snapping off when you pull your hood up.
But I do love the sound of snow crunching underfoot...

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Does your hair really snap off when you pull your hood up??
Now, that is just too dog gone cold. It would be nice
to visit when it is warm, but sure don't want to now. I'm a whimp...^_^

North Augusta, ON

yes!! I've been the recipient of quite a few unscheduled haircuts. Have a shower, have to take the dogs out with wet hair...go to pull up the hood on my coat and the hair's froze and snaps...sigh

(Zone 1)

What's a coat?

^_^

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

All this and you grow hoyas? must seem like having a piece of
paradise in your home.

North Augusta, ON

it does! it's like a jungle in here and they keep me busy when it's too cold to do anything else.

(Zone 1)

I just cannot even imagine what -35ºF feels like!! I'd have to have so many layers of clothes on that I'd fall over. I don't think I could survive ... I'd have to hibernate and never go outside. I really love looking at pictures of the beautiful snowy scenery though, so to all y'all northerners ... don't forget to share photo's when that white stuff starts falling from the sky!

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Just think, you can share your Hoya paradise and and
snowy wonderland with all of us. We would love to see pic of both.

North Augusta, ON

ok...just one because I don't want to hijack this thread. This is after a storm. There is a picnic table under the snow on the other side of the car for a depth reference...

Glad I live in Georgia.
Brrrrrrr!!!!
Too cold for lunch on the picnic table. Huh??
