Jamie:
Are these from cuttings? How long have they been growing?
Grayson
Hows your trailer coming along?
Garyon-I put the leaves down around the beginning of July, separated into individual solo cups, pruned heavily, placed under bright light, and continued pruning out large leaves that covered the new growth beneath. Long necks got pinned down or reburied. I didn't pay enough attention to which way was best (forgot to mark them). I have a big tray of duplicated varieties and have lost some to overwatering or overpruning or both!
Lynn- I just checked, and my champagne pinks are all gone. They all succumbed from the above. I hope yours will make it. I lost some Fancy Trails too. I think the variegated varieties did not like my harsh method or pruning.
Here are some more: Rob's Jindalee, Vanilla trail, Fancy trail, Ramblin' showstopper, Gundaroo, Boolaroo, Chantaspring, S. Rupricola, and R Humpty Doo. The very fastest growing and suckering for me are R. Sticky Wicket and R. Jindalee. (Ramblin' Showstopper was added as a small starter and not grown from a leaf)
.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!
Jamie,
Yours look great!! I will post pictures of mine in the next few days.I'm not sure what happened to Champagne pink, but it has no leaves left.I hate it when I lose something a friend sends, but I am afraid I will.Sorry!!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones and to all members here!! ^_^.
Lynn
Those look healthy. We're on our way now!
Thanks so much Jamie! I am a little behind ,but should be able to catch up soon the way these are growing!!
I have removed leaves and buds. They really look strange. I'm doing this because...? I have let some plants bloom, and there is a lot of variety in color, flower size and stem length. My favorite so far has small light pink flowers on ling stems. Another has clear pink flowers nearly an inch across. I said earlier that I probably would not grow violets from seed again, but it is fun seeing the plants develop and bloom for the first time.
Show us some pictures! I'm trying to grow from seed that I got from joining the gesneriad society. No success yet (1 month). How long does seed take to germinate?
Hi, Jamiew
I started seed January, and started posting here in March. Some of the posts included pictures. I think most of them germinated within 3 weeks, but some took longer. The seeds were like dust and I wasn't even sure it was seed. I scattered them on top of a dampened, fine textured seed mix in a tofu container (holes for drainage) and covered them with a piece of glass. I placed them within 3 inches of fluorescent lights.
I will try to post more pictures soon. Plants are in all stages, pruned and unpruned. Some I have allowed to flower right away. They have far fewer crowns than those I have been grooming. The pruned plants look very sorry, but I am advised that they will recover and bloom heavily.
Grayson
I checked my seed container again- do signs of life. Is it possible that too wet will kill them? The saran wrap stays moist overhead.
Jamie,
The soil should be moist, but not severely wet.It is possible they may still sprout. Some things sprout fast and others take longer.
Bonnie, is Bon Bon a trailer? I have leaves down. I used to have Cirelda....lost it.
she looks like one but is not, she's a semi mini
bonnie
Very cute Bonnie ^_^
Lookin' good Lynn. Mine died lonnggg time ago!! LOL!!
i cut most of my trailers back, they got to big. lol
bonnie
Your trailers are gorgeous Bonnie!!
Oh Mrs Bonnie It's SOOO Good to see you!! I have been worried!!
Gesneriad seeds can take much longer than av seeds. Some take months to germinate. Patience!
oh so good to be back, missed you all.
bonnie
Lynn, you did so good to keep those alive and growing, they were so tiny! I'd just take out any big leaves that are blocking light from the suckers beneath.
Okay Jamie, that's what I will do.I didn't know if I needed to do anything else.
Mine are starting to look a little better now, and some are budding. I think I had them too close to the lights: they were forming very tight crowns with small dark green in-curved leaves. Do you think anything else might be going on? One I gave away last summer is doing great, and has been in bloom since then I've been told.
Thanks
Grayson
Without a picture it's hard to tell, but I think it was just too much light.
Wow Jamie,
What a gorgeous mountain of plants!! miniwinni is adorable, but don't you have to disbud so they will bloom for the show? I don't know, that's why I'm asking.
What soil mix do you use for the azalea pots?
Lynn
I follow the AVSA guidelines for when to stop disbudding before a show. I've also heard that trailers don't really even need to be disbudded, but I generally do anyway. I use Oyama AV bagged soil from selectivegardener.com and mix in 30-50% perlite, vermiculite or both. I also put a layer of perlite on the bottom of all pots for extra drainage safety. What do you use?
That's a really nice looking plant you have there jamiew! Well done!
Msc
Jamie,
I don't know the guidelines anymore.I was asking because I thought you had to take off all the flower buds about 5 weeks or so before the show so it would be in full bloom for the show.I know very little about show plants, but Bonnie,Nichole,Helene and others do.
I tried some trailers in the 6-8 inch pots, with perlite in the bottom, but I used a 1-1-1 mix and managed to kill them (even though I tried hard not to overwater). That's why I wanted to know your method.....it works!!
This original thread started in 2009 and has lots of posts on it. Some members who have dial up might have problems loading it. I started a new one a little while back. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1137144/ You all can use it or start a new one. Doesn't matter to me. Just a thought.
