jannich, I'm not sure I understand what you mean by stripping down to four leaves.
Do I take all the bottom leaves off the plant and let it grow tall? or put it deeper in the pot? There are two separate plants of Galiwinku. Tomorrow it the planting day for me.
Wish me luck.
Hows your trailer coming along?
Hi Eileen,Sorry it's taken so long to read this.If your going to start from the begining of the project like the rest of us did,the instructions say to take off all but four leaves. You can see the picture of what to leave on your plant, see figure one on the instuction page.Your plant looks good so maybe you could just remove some of the lower leaves and sink it deeper in the 2 1/2 pot and take off the flowers.
As we know, the 5" pan pots will be used in our experiment at some point. The question is, what about the size after that? In this picture, you see a 5" & 6" pan pot next to each other. Since trailers like shallow root systems, the 6" pan pot seems a bit deep, right?

That sounds perfect and a great price. Are they hard or soft plastic. Just wondering the best way to put holes in the bottom.
They are kind of the same plastic that the margarine comes in, so I'd say it is a softer plastic.
I am going to go back and get one or two more packages. Since I am wanting to show a few trailers in the club show in May, I will need to have extras to paint white for slip-potting purposes.
Great! Thanks! I will look for them here.
Connie
Great find Nichole. The dishes look perfect. That is quite a big difference in the pan pots.I'm going to look for those dishes here too. Thanks for the tip.
Does anyones trailer have flower buds yet? Mine doesn't but it has so many crowns growing it's unbelievable.I tried counting them but ended up breaking a large leaf off. That's what I get for being nosey ^_^
Mine has a few blooms on them so far, but according to the directions, now is the time to remove them, so another crown can start in that place . . .
They look great Bonnie!!
Your trailers do look great Bonnie.Ramblin dots is a beauty...But I see flowers,no cheating, you have to chop them off.LOL ^_^
lol i don't have the heart.ugh

Congrats on that Chantaspring. I have had it a couple different times and they just don't grow well for me and never bloomed!
Many of my trailers are just growing giant leaves! I've been cutting them off so some shoots will have a chance to grow out, but so far no shoots, just leaves growing big. I think I need to stop cutting leaves and pinch out the end instead.
tish
Bonnie.Have your hubby chop the flowers off and you stay in the other room.Problem fixed ^_^
I have just about given up on mine!! They are growing but not sending out new crowns. Blooming...not even close. I'm still trying though.
Melanie
hey jan, you are just to smart lol(:)

Syrumani, how many inches across are those dishes from walmart? I saw some today, but I thought the ones they had (marked as 2 lb. tins) might be too big for my trailers. Right now they are in 3oz solo cups. They also had a 2 pk for $3, with handles, that were a little smaller. I may go back and get those.
imadigger - the ones I got are 6 1/4" across (this is the opening size . . . with the plastic, it is closer to 6 1/2"). I wasn't suggesting to use these right away. I mentioned these on the thread because at some point, we will be putting our trailers into a 5" pan pot. These containers would be a good step up once the trailers in the 5" pan pots need repotting. I've got a trailer I am going to pot up tomorrow using one of these. I'll take pictures before and after.
Oh! OK. I mis-understood. I guess I'll go back and pick up a pk. It may be 6 months to a year before my trailers are big enough, but I'll be prepared. LOL
Thanks for measuring.
OK...I am jealous :) Looking good, Jan!
Mine has a nice main crown, and maybe 2-3 smaller crowns. I think I'll have to remove the center crown . . . will re-check the instructions.
Mine is....is....."alive". LOL!!!! Hopefully one day it will do something. It is growing leaves and it is green :)
My gracious, Bonnie! Yours has really taken off. I can't even imagine what our finished product will look like with the different varities that each of us are growing. I am sure it will take our breath away.
Hi, Bonnie your plant looks awesome.it didn't hurt it at all letting it bloom!I really like that one.. I'm so impressed with the growth and suckers on my plant I started a couple other trailers like this.
Connie,Your plant will grow.It must be making more roots than leaves.I told you all this would be a long project All of a sudden it will jump up and grow ^_^
Hi Nichole, cut the center crown out? I better read the directions again.
Hello, everyone! It's been very long since I last checked in, not only here, but on DG in general. I'm coping with a lot of health issues in our family back home. Most of my AVs did very poorly this winter (what with all that dry air the heater spreads aroud the house).
Fortunately, the experimental AV was placed in an enclosed space (some people call it jar), and she's one of my best looking AVs. Here is her pic on Jan 12th (the 4 month milestone) - that's the most recent photo I have. I will take another one tomorrow, if my hectic life allows me. It grew a lot of leaves, I have some small growth points, but they seem to be stolons, not buds.
However, I think I'm doing something wrong, because my leavse seem quite leggy. The light is 8 in above the plant.
Sorry about the health issues. Always glad to have someone check back in now and then. Some of those smaller av varieties just tend to grow leggier. Do you know the name of the plant? I would bump it up closer to the light and see what happens. When Jan checks in and answers your post she might say, all the way up to the light...she has good luck that way. Mine started growing really tight when I did that so I think mine was too close. You want those suckers and if you have a good deal of new ones coming on you might need to take off those leggy leaves anyway so they will have room to grow out and the strength will go into the new growth, not the old leaves....I'll let Jan chime in on that too, so don't do anything until you hear from her. I basically know what to do, but my plants don't understand yet, ha. I did miss the part where it should be under-cover...I recently read about that on another web site, so I popped a clear plastic cup over a couple of mine the other day. Thanks for posting! I've been wondering how others plants are doing. Take care...tish
Oh, Tish, thanks for posting.
About the doming: It was nowhere in the instructions. It's just that I live in the desert, with very low humidity overall, and worse during wintertime, when the heater dries the air even more. I've had terrible problems with starting AVs from leaf, and with keeping my baby AVs alive and happy. I've been corresponding for a while with a lovely lady that grows a lot of minis (extremely happy if domed, she told me), and she suggested that I dome. So I domed 2 of my plants (one being the experiment plant - Rob's Galiwinku from Jan, which is a semi-mini, and the other is a mini). I noticed a good spurt of growth for the experiment plant after about 2 weeks, and a nice growth rate thereafter.
All other AVs that I have entered a decline, more visible for the minis and semis. I've also lost a few, despite my watering them consistently. I am now collecting jars (the bigger, the better - I became picky with the pickle jars, LOL) to dome every survivor. I also decided not to get more AVs for now - two very generous ladies here on DG sent me leaves and baby plants, and I've purchased many this last fall. It hurts my heart to see them bite the dust, and I will just focus on trying to keep the ones I (still) have alive and as happy as possible. I have another year to live here, in El Paso.
About the lighting: maybe the fact that they have a glass barrier above them decreases the light intensity they receive? (the other domed one also looks leggier than the ones not domed (but both look much happier then the rest). I'll wait for Jan to pop in too. I just hope she's not upset of my scarce posting, but I'm a mess, and I'm really trying to do my best with the experiment, given the sky-high levels of stress here.
Hugs,
Alexandra
