Broken Crown of Thorns

Warren Center, PA(Zone 5b)

I recently broke off a piece of my "Crown of thorns", I let it scab over and potted it with Rooting Hormone as directed. The leaves are turning yellow now. Should I have done something else or is this normal.. This is my first time trying a cutting from this plant. Should I place it in a plastic bag as well or just leave it as is. Most of my cuttings I use the plastic bag but was hesitant because of it being a Succulent/Cacti

Hi: one thing I did learn about COT's is they like to be kept on the dryer side when propagating them. I didn't worry about the ap when sticking them wich I wonder if it would have been better to give it a little time to hea somewhat.. I hope this helps

Thanks Dave, actually I made a little terrarium from a 2 liter soda bottle and put it over the pot. Since then the leaves have not only stopped turning yellow and falling but it has started a new growth from the bottom and is even starting to flower. I have it sitting next to my laptop and am curious if the heat from the laptops fan blowing on it had any influence. It seems to be thriving now. I must have done something it liked since the mother plant isn't flowering.

Might like the increase of humidity without extra water. Congrats, love to hear a happy ending!

very kool. yes congrats on the happy ending.

Now I just have to find a way to get the mother plant blooming again, it sits in a south facing window and is growing good, with a really nice deep green color to the leaves but hasn't reflowered since I got it in July. Any suggestions?

Assuming that the other plant that *is* blooming is getting the same soil and same sun exposure, I'd try replicating the humidity next - you can do that by putting a small tray under the plant, putting pebbles in it and putting water in it. Not high enough to submerge the pebbles - you don't want your plant using that as a watering can.

Thanks Pagancat, I'll try that. Right now it's in a 6" pot with an attached saucer. Should I just set the whole pot in a tray or should I take off the saucer part. The cutting only has two main stem with two little( and I do mean Little) leaves on the bottom at soil level. But it has two fully opened flowers and three more about to open. Other than watering it initally( a month ago) I haven't watered it yet.

I am not sure but could it be day length specific ... ie long summer days
just a thought

It might be worth Googling, or perhaps going on to the cactus/ succulent forum. I'd hate for the poor thing to rot or something on my advice!!!!

Warren Center, PA(Zone 5b)

Googled the plant and found out it is part of the " pointsetta" family so maybe it is a " short day" plant but nothing anywhere suggest that it is. I took two more cuttings just to see if the same thing happens. It's a dwarf so maybe that has something to do with it. The mother plant looks beautiful except for not flowering, I have three more flower buds on the broken cutting. I wonder if it only blooms on new growth. I noticed what might be some buds just barely starting at the very tip of some of the stems, hopefully in a day or two I will be able to tell whether they are leaf or flower buds. I can live without her flowering as long as I know she's healthy and she looks so good, most of my plants are foliage plants anyway so while flowers are nice I am just as content to have healthy green plants. Thanks to both of you for your help and I will keep you informed. I bought my daughter one at the same time ( I can never buy just one of anything ) and hers is okay but not as deep as deep a green as mine. Which surprised me because she has massive south facing windows and all I have is one little one over the kitchen sink.

Could be too much sun? It's so hard to say, there's so many variables, aren't there?

Hi:
Being in the poinsettia family I would believe the shorter days might help. New growth is always encouraging. I remember growing them in full sun in south florida but they were the common COT's and yellow and red.

Mother Crown of Thorns is in full bloom now, I took some more cuttings and did my first Bonsai forest with the Crown of thorn cuttings. So far they are all doing well and only lost one leaf so far. Some of the stem cuttings were not exactly straight so I had to prop them up with "City Chicken" stick but they seem to starting to straighten up. The biggest one I used for the center and it has a small side shoot angling upwards and I kinda like the Character it gives the center.

Success!

yes but only with patience and a lot of good encouragement from a lot of good people.

Bonsai forest...tell us more, and maybe pics too? I have had almost 100% success with cuttngs of my COT's after I cut I usually leave to dry for 2 to 4 days, I have also been told to use rubbing alcohol to seal them, they usually bloom within a month. I also only have mostly red and yellow but have a lovely peach/green, on a recent visit to Trinidad I saw a lovely pale pink. Never knew it was Poinsettia family, I have NO success with that at all!

I don't have a camera and when I tried to link to the photo that gave me the idea I couldn't get it to display. As an alternative I typed into GOOGLE SEARCH " how to succeed with bonsai grown inside your home" and it locates the book. Go to the index page and locate page 56, that has the picture that got me thinking it would be possible. Of course mine doesn't look anything like the photo but it did come out fairly well. Still has a lot of growing to do but I am really proud as it is my first attempt at Bonsai, I used 11 cuttings- 7 on the left- 1 in the center - 3 on the right with the largest in the center. Since starting this thread all my cuttings have bloomed and are producing new leaves so they must have ( if not rooted ) at least accepted the transplanting. My COT is a dwarf with the Red flowers although not the intense Red that I have seen on some of the full size ones but a nice color. The leaves on the plants are a deep green and quite glossy, I don't know if that is because of it being a dwarf or just the plant itself. My daughter has one whose leaves are a little smaller but no where near as deep a green. Several of my cuttings ( not in the bonsai ) have started to send out shoots from the bottom so hopefully the will start to become something more that just a single stem plant.

If you can't locate the book let me know and I will try again to link it into a reply.

Kolachie??????? Glad to know you have had success, COT's I find very easy, all of mine are in pots and I am thinking of putting some in the gound now.
