Great news about Dennis!
Oh yeah, Katie...the midnight owls.
Apropos of nothing, however, I might be down and out tonight.
My houseplants took it upon themselves to grow like the beanstalk, and I have tried to drag, push, kick, beg, plead and cry to get some of them in this afternoon. The one ficus I finally got in touches my 9 foot ceiling. Why didn't I know that before I dragged it in?
Do I knock a hole in my ceiling?
Sigh. I am so tired. I only have 2 more ficus trees to go.
And a rubber plant.
And some kinda schefflera, which is not spelled correctly I think.
But it's dark, so not tonight.
Good to be here, thank you.
Apropos of Nothing v. 2
Yes, I'm sure they can wait until tomorrow. Getting ready for winter is such a pain. Not sure what to you do about the Ficus.
I'll stand on a ladder and chop it's little top off, then feel sorry and stick the tops in soil and have another ficus tree. That's how I ended up with 3 anyway.
I am a very slow learner.
I should have collected something simple, like tattoos. They don't take up any room at all.
Nor do they grow. Or do they?
What happens to a tattoo if one gains weight? Or loses? Do they expand, wrinkle, what?
Well, at least they like you.
Don't know about the details of tattoos. I can't commit to anything for that long . . .
Nor can I, but I my mind wanders and wonders....
Tatoos look best after the 1st year after that they just do what we do, age.
Tattoos just do whatever your skin does. When I started getting tattoos, my sister asked "But what about when you get old? Won't they get saggy and wrinkly?" and I said Yes, but tattoos have become so popular, there will be lots of other people my age running around with saggy wrinkly tattoos too, so it won't matter. ;)
I really want another one. I have a design in mind already, just got to save up the money.
Apropos of nothing; I finally found a Tiffany tea rose locally! This makes me all kinds of happy. That was the last plant I needed to complete my collection of my Mother's favorites. :)
Julie,
I've been away from the computer for a bit. Sorry to hear about your gma and the break-in.
We had our Canadian Thanksgiving dinner this weekend. I am an equal opportunity turkey chef. We celebrate both because of DH being Canadian and me being American but sometimes the days we have the dinner are wacky because of my work schedule at the hospital. I just sent my nephew down in Portland a msg via facebook saying we are having US Thanksgiving dinner on Nov 21 or 22 because I work on the whole long weekend of the 26th. Oh well.
Take care all. I am back at work tomorrow.
Cin
I missed my golden opportunity.
My skin is already wrinkley and saggy.
Guess I'll never get a tattoo now.
Hi Sharon. Enjoy the thread. Just please don't drag any of that Parking Lot detritus along with you.
I'm bowing out here anyway. I am really freaked out by all the gun talk.
So change the subject.
:p
Haven't been on for a couple of days and am getting caught up.
Sorry to hear about Grandma's break-in. Thankfully it didn't escalate into anything else. Hopefully he will be caught.
Good to see you here, Sharon.
We have to get a new furnace. It's going to get cold here soon. Will be installed tomorrow. Mom is surrounded by warmed up rice bags. We may have to get a little electric heater to keep in her room, just to take off the chill.
My son designed a tattoo of a Viking ship for a friend and it is displayed on his shoulder.
A niece has a real pretty one of roses and vines around her wrist that looks like a bracelet.
I have never had the urge to have a tatoo OR a gun. Both freak me out!
I have to edit this to say tatoos on others do not freak me out - in fact I like most that I see. I just can't imagine one on me.

LFS - Happy Thanksgiving!!
I'm "kind of" with you, Summer. But there's enough Alaskan in me to know that some things are a necessary evil.
My first thoughts with the gun talk is that I hoped someone wouldn't inadvertently shoot a loved one. And then I heard the news this morning that someone somewhere in the U.S. (in his 60's) thought he heard a noise in the middle of the night and ended up shooting his fiance. It's just too easy to make a mistake.
My brother had a patient once with a big goiter on his neck. Turned out to be full of ink leaching out of a/some tattoos that his body just didn't know what to do with. If I had been into tattoos, that surely would have stopped me right there. I'm sure, though, that techniques and inks are better these days than they used to be. Right?
Summer I shall respect your worries and not discuss any more past this comment. But you never hear the stories of the victims who were not "victims" because of a gun. Most being where nobody was harmed. A common non-discussed topic in todays culture. Note you warn with harmless events, IE calling out to subject, racking in a shell and calling out, then discourage with harmless noise #8 birdshot, and if the perp is intent then the necessary. My family is important to me and I have seen the dammage (wife #1 & 2 that have been raped).
I need another cortisone shot in my shoulder. Argh. It's getting to the point where I can hardly use my right arm at all. I wouldn't mind getting the shots so much, they do help, but I have to pretty much not do *anything* with my right arm for at least 5 days after the injection, or it doesn't work. What a pain.
I threw some dried sunflowers out in the back yard for the birds- there's a squirrel sitting on a concrete block gnawing away at one of them. LOL Now he's trying to run off with the whole thing, but the long stem I left on it keeps tripping him. *snort*
I'm in a bit of a funk lately. Feeling really run down, and my back is being even nastier than usual. Leftover from my hard week in Seattle? Weather change? Old age? I dunno, but I feel lousy.
I have cortisone shots in my back, Pony...puts me down for a few days too, but sure is worth it in the long run. Man, they hurt though. I save all my bad words for those shot days.
Hi Jan...you, too.
Pony, as I wrote on the philosophy thread I am also in a funk today. Maybe it's the weather changing? Now there's no denying that winter will soon be here. I took my dog for a long walk and that helped but still feeling a bit lousy. I hope you feel better soon. Hot baths cure a lot!
*groan* I wiiiiiish I could take hot baths! Unfortunately, reclining in the tub is extremely painful for my stupid back. I just can't do it. This is why we need a real hot tub so I can soak sitting upright.
My docs tell me that my back problem can't be helped with cortisone injections. I would SO get them if they would help me. (the disc between my two lowest lumbar vertabrae is gone, it's bone-on-bone.)
Me too, Pony, but the injections go to the nerve root cell, which is where the pain comes from. I am in a pain management program for the last 2 years, I get the injections like clockwork.
But you and your doctors know best. I only know what works for me...after a long search for an answer.
Hrm. Maybe I need a new doctor. I've been taking my ortho guy's word for it.
Sharran: tattoos: with age & weight gain they become animated.
Pony - get another medical opinion. There have been advances in this arena. But insist upon dealing with the cause & not just the symptoms. You never know what might work for you, and there is no reason to live with pain that is debilitating. Best wishes to you.
Steve - ditto. Criminals do not respect human life, but do respect the business end of a gun. There are not enough police to protect & defend the entire populace, making it necessary for folks to defend themselves. whether or not the average person owns a gun doesn't bother me - it's those whose intent is to harm that I worry about.
Kathy - must ask: what did your brother do with goiter guy? "scuse me - you're leaching ink..." oy.
Thanks for the affirmation Kayte.
As far as tattoos if you are sagging or wrinkly you can have 3-D tattoo's that can have special character. I have always wanted the lip thing on my hand so I can tell difficult people things they don't want to hear. Then I am not the messenger. LOL "Topo GiGio" would like to tell you something ...........
Pony you need a Japanese tub. I had one in AK and you walk in the front, close the door and sit. It is upright and you can fill the tub to you waist or neck. I loved it! Takes less room than a tub. I want one in my bathroom update.
Steve, that sounds wonderful. Now we just need to win the Lotto... hmm... may not happen since we don't buy tickets. ;p
I just baked fudge brownies. OMG it smells good in here.
I think I'll bake pumpkin cranberry bread tomorrow.
ya know, Pony, i never had the pleasure of your infamous pumpkin cranberry bread. How I missed it at the RU is a mystery. Brownies smell of chocolatelygoodness, but Pumpkin is divine...
Hey, Kate. I don't know what he did with goiter guy. I'm guessing that he sent the goiter guy to a surgeon who reported back. Or maybe my brother aspirated it and then sent the guy to a surgeon. My brother's a GP.
I do know that my brother doesn't tend to play around when it comes to sharing the facts, so I'm sure the guy knew exactly what was going on . . .
The pumpkin cranberry bread kinda got lost in the shuffle on Saturday night- mostly it was eaten for breakfast on Sunday. I posted the recipe in the RU recipe thread if you want to try it- it's super easy to make.
It's a favorite of Tracy's... and everybody at his office. hehe. I'll send two big loaves to work with him, and they'll be gone in an hour.
I got the recipe in kind of a strange way- back in about 1996, my Mom was looking for something with both cranberry and pumpkin in it, and I couldn't find anything in my cookbooks. So I called Ocean Spray and asked them if they had any ideas. The lady read the bread recipe to me over the phone, and then mailed me a whole bunch of other ones.
well, from reports I've heard - you scored a winner recipe.
Do you make it as directed, or do you tweak it a bit?
I shall detour to the recipe postings...hungry & must go to bed. 5 a.m. will arrive much too soon. pumpkin-cranberry bread dreams...
Yikes, I haven't kept up with this thread recently, and look what happens. Rarejem and PNWMtngirl, I am relieved to hear that your grandma/mother (respectively) is alright after such a harrowing ordeal. I think the alarm system or dog sound like a much better bet than a gun, simply because both of those could operate effectively even when she is sleeping. I have been in situations several times in life in which I was attacked, threatened, and/or robbed, and in none of those situations would I have been able to get to a gun had I even had one unless it was in a holster strapped to my body and I was highly trained in its use. I do admit that I am not a person who would even consider owning a gun unless Harley wanted to get back into deer hunting and went to the midwest to get his old hunting rifle from his brother where it is in safe keeping in a locked gun cabinet. We would have to have a similar arrangement here. I couldn't take any risks with children visiting my home. That wouldn't make it of much use against an intruder however.
On a more comforting topic, Summerkid I would love to have some help with my memorial quilt, even if it is just advice and guidance about how to proceed. It is completely on hold right now, but I'm not trying to finish until the end of December. Thanks for your kind offer.
Katye, I make it exactly as the recipe is written. :)
oh, pumpkin season - warms my heart - I made yummy yummy pumpkin scones on the weekend, and I just couldn't bear for any of them to feel slighted so we ate the lot, in one sitting, two of us, with butter AND clotted cream. Its Tuesday and I am still full.
Worth it.
*big eyes*
Pumpkin scones?
Please, do share the recipe so we can all stuff ourselves with them too? :)
Pony, I will do that at the weekend when I get back from workwork. Promise promise - we can all make them at the same time and have a mass yummy
Oh man those pumpkin scones sound great. I will have to adapt the recipe to be gluten free. Pumpkin anything is so good!
The gun issue - it's clear that there are many opinions about owning guns. I personally would not have one but I live where neighbors are close and we watch out for each other. But I accept the fact that I am still especially vulnerable because I live alone. I do have my dog Koka. Although she was trained to be an Angel dog for disabled children I have no doubt she would do anything to protect me. So I think the gun decision depends on many factors and each person has to do what is best for them.
It's really cold today! And windy! And rainy!
Ah, the fall darkness and rain is here. Bring out the treatment light. After which the pumpkin scones and cranberry/pumpkin bread. It is almost 10:00am. Is the sun up yet? I cannot tell. By December my posts will become maudlin. Must have more light!! MORE!
I had a very good laugh about Soferdigs 'mouth' puppet. Popogigio was a mouse though. (who knows if that is spelled correctly.) I remember waiting to see him all the time on the Ed Sullivan show. I remember the mouth puppet, too. Reminds me of a puppet I made back in the day when I was working at the local public health department in the 'prenatal' clinic. I had all the single mothers with mental health issues on my caseload. So many of them made such terrible decisions about which men to go with - over and over and over again. And of course, so many of them had STDs. I made a puppet representing a certain part of the male body. It was quite graphic. It would talk to the woman, saying all the things she was dying to hear like 'Hello baby! Where have you been all my life? I've been waiting for someone just like you to hold, (live with, pay all my bills, feed me, take care of me, etc.) Pay no attention to those things crawling all over me. They mean nothing. You mean everything.... NO No! I've only been with 1 or 2 other women, none as lovely as you. "... you get the drift.
Oh, the joys of that work!! LOL! I have no idea if it was helpful. But it was amusing.
Pony, I second the motion that you get a second opinion.
Glad to see that there are so many pumpkin lovers out there. Pumpkin is my second favorite food (after artichokes).
Laurie, I, too, am waiting for the pumpking scone recipe. I bought a pumpkin yesterday for carving, so I'll have plenty on hand.
Ahh, joining in late on this thread. So many good thoughts on self preservation to consider. I vote for the "big" dog, loud threatening noises, big stick and ... well, what ever works best to keep you and yours safe and sound. I like 00# and self loaded rock salt, deters very well when all else fails.
I too think pumpkin scones and cranberry anything would be wonderful with a cup of tea. Must remember that for after I finish planting the last of the pot ghetto into the ground and breaking down the cold frames for winter storage. Hoping to finish today and beat the rain. Fixing to get cold, wet and windy here. Might come in handy should there be any left to lure the latest drop-off dog that will need shelter, food and a warm dry place to stay. Might need name ideas for newest 'family' member.
Pixy, I am going to borrow your puppet idea for "local girls group" discussion on well being and confidence. Great idea starter. I don't have any tats, too old and rumply for them to look good anyway. Love the idea on someone other than me or mine.
Hope that Grandma continues to do well and that the bum is caught and properly dealt with.
Happy Fall!
Kris - We need pictures of the latest pup. Who in their right mind would do that to a dog????
Good luck beating the weather. It's kicking up in downtown Seattle right now. I'm thinking right now that I'll drive north around the lake to get home, rather than taking the floating bridge. We'll see what the traffic report dictates.
