The PNWLS bulbs came today. Some very nice bulbs in there. Happy as a clam here ^_^
Lily Society Memberships
Mine too! Wow! Thank you so much, Tracey, for suggesting it.
I do no more than want to share the joy it brings me. If you get half of what I do out of a membership than its worth its weight in gold. Thanks pard, for suggesting it to me in 2006!
Always wondered:
Why are clams happy?
Leftwood, coming from the coast of Massachusetts myself, we hear that term alot...looked this up:
As happy as a clam
Meaning--
Very happy and content.
Origin--
Why would clams be happy? It has been suggested that open clams give the appearance of smiling. The derivation is more likely to come from the fuller version of the phrase, now rarely heard - 'as happy as a clam at high water'. Hide tide is when clams are free from the attentions of predators; surely the happiest of times in the bivalve mollusc world. The phrase originated in the north-eastern states of the USA in the early 19th century. The earliest citation that I can find is from a frontier memoir The Harpe's Head - A Legend of Kentucky, 1833:
"It never occurred to him to be discontented... He was as happy as a clam."
The first record that I can find of the 'high water' version is from the Pennsylvania newspaper The Adams Sentinel, August 1844:
"Crispin was soon hammering and whistling away as happy as a clam at high water."
The expression was well-enough known in the USA by the late 1840s for it to have been included in John Russell Bartlett's Dictionary Of Americanisms - A Glossary Words Aid Phrases Usually Regarded As Peculiar To The United States, 1848:
"As happy as a clam at high water," is a very common expression in those parts of the coast of New England where clams are found.
Also in 1848, the Southern Literary Messenger - Richmond, Virginia expressed the opinion that the phrase "is familiar to everyone".
Sandnsea, now that has made us all Happy as a clam! High tide or not. :) LOL
What fun!
I use that phrase often. It is just one of those things that I find suits the mood or the tone. Kind of a sweet saying really.
Makes me miss New England.
Thanks Sandnsea. Although . . . regarding the first, less likely derivation,
It has been suggested that open clams give the appearance of smiling.
I think the smile would be on the person, not the clam, LOL.
I was just thinking that this whole conversation was making me hungry. :) LOL
Gotta say I love clams! When I am out on the coasts I have them at least once a day...around here, no thanks.
Yes, clams are the best here... however, WINTER... not so much.. lolololol ! I think I need to join the PNWLS...
I joined PNWLS, due to the The Lily Forum. I received my first bulb order and I'm very happy. I would strongly suggest any lily lover join this organization. The prices of the lilies was absolutely wonderful. I recovered my cost of membership in the savings that I got on the lilies I ordered. The organization has a wonderful web site, etc. New England seems to have no lily organizations. I wish I lived closer, I would like to become involved with the members and go the lily shows. I found the web site to even be better then NALS web site. NALS web site seems to be improving as they revamp it.
I always love hearing about people finding a new way to enjoy lilies. Getting that PNWLS box twice a year is such a treat for me. It's just so great that you can enjoy a lily society even if you don't live close enough to one to be involved. Glad you liked your box!
I joined PNWLS and NALS last month. Got information and membership from both. Also got a call from PNWLS about their bulb sale. Got a few at a good price. Thanks for the information Magnolialover.
I've been digging up whole beds to accomodate my new lilies, and having a blast with redesigning. I'm spending hours in the dirt, all blissed out. My neighbors are giving me very quizzical looks, but I am dreaming of the displays next year.
Thank you again, Tracey.
Donna
Edited to say that I just received in the mail a check from PNWLS for excess postage. A little over two dollars. I wouldn't have minded at all if they had kept the difference, but going to all this trouble just shows what wonderful people are associated with PNWLS.

The bulbs that I did receive had better be the most beautiful flowers in my garden b/c so far I'm not impressed at all w/ my new membership. My order was shorted 50%. The coordinator promptly acknowledged the error but in the same breath told me she thought it "complicated" to contact the seller (NW Bulbs) to ask for the other half of my bulbs. Then my refund is wrong, strike 2.
When the order first arrived, I accidentally called the supplier and told them of the shortage. I quickly realized my conversation s/b w/ the PNWLS and told NW Bulbs that I would take it up w/ PNWLS as that was the correct way to get this resolved. The seller told me they had plenty of my shorted bulbs in stock.
Mistakes happen, I make some daily but what is irritating me is that attitude of "live w/ our mistake. We'd rather you, newbie member, be inconvenienced than bother our supplier, NW Bulbs." I am not feeling a warm fuzzy welcome here. Nope, not impressed at all.

vossner, I am so sorry it has gone so badly for you with your new membership. It is not my intent to steer anyone wrong. I just wish I were the one on the other end trying to fix it for you.
vossner, Sorry to hear about your problems. I'm a new member this year also. PNWLS members involved with the bulb sale that I was in contact with, bent over backwards, to complete my order to my satisfaction. They communicated with me about my order-emailed if they were out of a bulb I ordered whereas I could choose another. I received everything with changes I ordered. I believe all the people involved with the bulb sale are volunteers of the membership, donating their time to help other members get unusal lilies at a cost savings. Based thus far on my experience, I'm sure if you contact them they will correct your refund.
mags, I am glad that you started this thread. I have enjoyed and learned so much from the participants in this forum, you and others have made my learning curve very smooth w/ very little loss/mistakes. I feel fortunate in that sense.
The person that took my membership appl was lovely to give me Oct-Dec of 2009 for free. I think this may be an isolated incident w/ somebody that may be overwhelmed w/ duties and not practical enough to recognize it and get help or bow out. I dunno. I'm still looking forward to a satisfactory conclusion of this matter. It's just bulbs and on the scale of problems in the world, this situation doesn't even rate (but not an excuse for somebody to not remedy, lol)
I got some fancy daffs from Old House yesterday so I will plant those today and enjoy the glorious, magnificent weather we are experienceing. Hope the same for y'all.

After thinking about this this morning for a while and coming back to read what you guys have posted makes me feel a little better. dlefferts is right about volunteerism here, there aren't a lot of people willing to take the responsibility of taking in all of those orders. And though each of us may handle it a different way, she is the one that has given of her free time to allow these sales to continue as they have in year's past. Yes, it is different than a business, in that all of it is done for the love of liliums and not any net profit.
I do hope that your situation is resolved graciously vossner....and that you too will look forward to the bi-annual PNWLS sales as I do ;) And of course know that each and every one of you make this forum what it is....very special ^_^

After having worked many lily bulb sales, I can assure you that we're just as upset when mistakes are made. As a lily society, we're out there sharing our passion with others and the last thing we want is for someone to be unhappy.
It's happened a couple times that we've received mis-ID'd bulbs, which isn't realized until several months later. To know that someone gleefully bought that same bulb from us (based on a pretty picture) makes your heart sink.
We're only human, but we try really hard to be perfect!
*with that I mind, I need to get myself together for the sale this weekend...*
Magnolialover, just keep it coming.....
Please!
