Thanks Jackie, Mittsy and Becky. I have no idea if it's protected or not Becky, I know my city doesn't know about it either or care b/c they have been mowing the side of the road where it grows all the time. I have one book that shows that it grows all over the South as a wildflower. I might go and check for seeds later on. The property behind it is just trees and usually when it's sold they'll cut down most of the trees and anything else they want to build houses.

if I see a plant that I want seeds from and there is no house around I stop and take a few
its not like you are killing the plant or destroying anything
this pic shows a really nice blue purpurea that came in some purple flaked seeds... it has large flowers that last most of the day... some times the flowers are still there the next day but they change to plain pink... i don't think it has a name but i have seen pictures posted by others on here of very similar vines... i'll deffinately be growing this one next year :-)
I am finding that as it is cooler the blooms are getting smaller and so are the seeds
I am going to devide my seeds by size and try and see if it affects the size of blooms on the vines next year I have one vine that the blooms till two weeks ago opened to be about four inches across and now they are opening and are about 1.5 inches across and the seeds are only about a quarter of the size very cute blooms the leaves are also very small I want to see if it makes an overall smaller vine
has anyone tried this before
No, but it would make a very interesting experiment. I noticed a similar thing happening with mine. Seed pods seem to be taking forever to ripen.
Very pretty Jackie, they do look very similar!
if I start more MG seeds...will the bloom on thru the cool. Weather?
Been a little under the weather the past few days. So ... where do I start? LOL!
Helena and Jackie - It could be the light blue blooming vines are one and the same cultivar. I don't know. The seeds came to me as Blue Blizzard and that's how I passed them on to you, Jackie. :-)
Jackie - The size and look of the blooms from your Jo Hanten Shibori made me wonder if it was an I. purpurea. It's a beaut, that's for sure!!!
Colin - I don't know why, but the minute I saw your bloom photos ... I got a big smile on my face. Those are really pretty blooms! You have a way with I. purpureas! :-)
DIRTYGIRL71 - If we get one freeze, they are done if they are I. nils. I. purpureas don't do well in a freeze either sorry to say. Do you have a sheltered area to grow them in? I don't grow them outside in the colder Florida months which will probably begin in late October/early November. Maybe later. But they tend to slow down in growth once the season changes. I think it has to do not only with temps, but the amount and intensity of sunlight. Thought about growing a few next to a sunny indoor window? That's what I do, as do many others here. It's nice having winter blooms! :-) BTW - Your little blue blooming vine looks like Ipomoea hederacea:

Mittsy and Mona - I think the smaller blooms and the vine slowing down in growth at the onset of Fall is probably typical of most MGs. They are probably putting all their energy into producing and ripening seed pods. I am seeing the same thing on mine even with a shot of Bloom Booster. Season is winding down ... :-(
Thanks Helena.
Becky, I love this one (Blue Blizzard)and may try to grow a
couple of these next summer.
I can save you some Jo Hanten Shibori seeds.
Becky, I didn't know you were feeling rough too
Apologizing for my sorry pic ahead of time. Just took the one photo
of Lady Laura. I enjoyed the few blooms I got from this vine since I haven't grown a Rose Silk for a couple of yrs. This will be my last blooms on this vine.
Edited to say that when my pic looks just a little bad when I enlarge it, when I send
it, it looks twice as bad. lol
Regret sending this one.

Pretty blooms Jackie. Are you growing the ones on the fence in the ground?
Helena thanks. Yes I had 5 or 6 different ones on the fence this
summer plus pandy, all growing in the ground. The Pink Tie Dye, Milky Way, Wedding Bells, Youjiro Yaguruma and one that looks like Blue Star of India, which has now dissappeared. Had a Drac there too
but it didn't like it there.
Blue Star of India type
