Lea -- I have White Swan. It should be a first year bloomer... mine were, and I should get plenty of seeds if you want any.
Cottage Garden Seed Swap and Chat #40
tcs :) thank you I still have coneflowers I need to get into the ground from Fairy's coop lol Time is getting short here we've had so much wind lately I haven't been able to spray grass out front where the tree was that's where I was going to plant them I know I can't over winter them I've tried a couple years in a row and they always die.
Does anyone know how coreopsis does wintering over in pots? I'm trying to get all of these plants out of my middle bed out back and there is no way I'm going to get them all planted I can't wait until spring you know how busy we all are in the spring LOL
chele I'm over wintering coleus for the first time too I took the cuttings a couple of weeks ago and they are in front of a window I just hope they make it. Good luck!
Lea, I've overwintered some of the really hardy yellow-orange flowered coreopsis in a concrete planter and it does fine. Some of the newer hybrids don't even overwinter in the ground, so I've stopped buying them.
thanks lea! i guess i should look at it like "it's not going to hurt to try". :-) yay!! a winter project for me.
~chele
I over winter Coroepsis here in the winter. I just cover with leave s and then uncover coem spring and giv e them some nic e sunny spots to jump start them growing. They usually pretty hard to croak, but they do take forver to come til it nic e and toasty outside.
Neal... I hope yoru Echie doe s bloom and nto onyl blooms but make s soem seed. If is does wil ya save me some from it and
Lalla. If you have anymroe of that kind ..well.. me..me..me ; ) LOL
The coreopsis I have are Pin Wheel and Autumn Blush do you think they are hybrids I'm sorry I'm going back and forth from the computer to digging plants and repotting lol It's a hectic day and for tomorrow lol Autum Blush I got last year and are in the ground I just repotted Pin Wheel a couple of weeks ago and now I'm stuck need to wait until next week to get more dirt! I may just leave the AB in the ground there is no way I'm going to get these all potted up before a frost. I can't even find my campanula out there and a FEW others I hate this LOL
Star, I'll save some of the seeds off of these pink ones I remember someone had some and later they reseeded back to White Swan it was someone on here in one of the swaps we had not sure if it's anyone that is in our swap now.
Chele - I wish I still had the pictures on my computer from last season's over-wintering, but the crash of '09 wiped my PC clean. Last year I overwintered all my coleus in small pots. Keep in mind that I over-wintered about 150 diffferent coleus, but it took 9 lighted shelves to keep them going all winter. First I rooted the cuttings - the best method for me is a mixture of damp perlite and potting soil - then potted them all up into individual containers. But I'm going to try something different this year. To try and save watering time and space I'm going to attempt to leave all the cuttings in their original rooting trays for the winter. I've got them planted pretty close together so I may have to pot them up sometime during the course of the winter, but for now I've only got 10 flats of coleus going where last year I had twice that many. And I am sooo digging that scene! They are like most "house plants."....just keep them warm and give them as much light as possible. They may not be fourishing in the spring, but as long as they stay alive through the winter they'll bounce back as soon as you can get them back outside. Here is a great thread on taking cuttings: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/596774/ . If you have any other questions just ask away.
Ella - I've got my nose in too many discussions. Which ones are you saying, "me, me, me" for?
Re: The Canna seed discussion. I've grown cannas from both Dawn Pink and Tropical Sunrise and if they weren't an exact match for the parent plant the differences were indiscernible. In other words they looked the same to me. LOL.
Tcs - can I order just 3 pairs of gloves in that co-op or do I have to order a minimum of a dozen?
Meredith... you can order only 1 if that is what you need.... but yes, you do not have to order a dozen.
That was one of my questions too, until i looked at the order spreadsheet.
Terese
Thanks Tcs! I definitely want to order then. : ) Thanks for sharing that link - I probably would have missed it if you hadn't. Local garden centers sell those gloves for between $7 and $9 a pair!
hi terese!! thanks for the glove coop info. hadn't seen it yet and i need some new gloves! looking forward to learning more from you this season, however, i think i've forgotten everything you taught me last year. LOL. so forgive me if i have repeats. ^_^
thank you lala!! i have the whole light set up for starting my seed babies in the spring - now i will just utilize them to start some cuttings. yippee! i have seen tons of coleus in commercial landscaping down here in OK. they don't use it as much up in OH....i will be running around snatching clippings instead of seed snatching. LOL! they also use tons of sweet potato vines. very fun getting used to my new planting zone. a BIG difference between a 5 and a 7!
did i read where ella mentioned we might we shooting for nov 1st to start our lists? i sure hope so - not nearly ready and have seeds still maturing.
Just remember on just ordering 1, you will be paying $4.80 shipping, which kind of negates the savings. The more you order, the better the deal because of the silly shipping. ^_^
Susan -- thanks for popping in on this thread... I can't recall where i saw you post about the Co-Op, probably a "kitty" thread.... but glad i saw it.. as i'm in need of gloves... for some reason -- i'm missing ONE... and it's probably the right hand... so this time i'm stocking up.
---
Since it finally stopped raining... i finally got out and got my Butterfly Weed planted. I had 3 milk jugs full ... taking one to Wisc for my garden up there and giving one to my neighbor [hopefully she will plant them]
Did a lot of weed pulling and gathered just a few seeds.
In my cutting back of dead plants... i found 2 Mantis pods.... so keep a look out for them.
I also need to dig up my Electric Blue [Penstemon]
I purchased seeds and only got 1 seedling, which of course did not bloom .... I'll leave it in my bathroom window [southern exp] and hopefully it will survive and bloom next year. I have it planted next to the foundation - hoping to give it an extra zone so it will keep on surviving.
I also have 3 hostas plus my hosta babies to get in the ground... winter is fastly approaching.
Terese
Speaking of Kittys and missing gardening gloves... you need to read this. : ) http://bluecrabboulevard.net/2006/07/21/cat-burglar/
LOL Terese must have gotten a visit from Willy :) That was a cute story!
I posted it on the glove co-op chat thread!
terese - did you start your butter weed from seed? winter sow? i tried last year, but none of mine germinated.....will just have to try again this year. i was really bummed on that one.
my huskers red is doing really well though - i was able to bring that one with me....it didn't bloom this year, but is thick and healthy.
my hubby laughs at me all the time..... as i don't have "garden friends".....i have "piggy friends". LOL!
I finally got a start on cleaning seeds I've had sitting all over the place drying. 14 stuffed seed envelopes in front of me now, and so many more to go! At least I'm seeing progress, I did have Daffodil bulbs all over the place, some in bags that Daff swap participants had sent, and mine in the colanders they were drying in, on top of all the bags and bowls of seed heads. Daff bulbs have been mailed, and the seed sorting has begun, so the mess inside is getting under control. The outside is a different story, LOL.
Cheles ... my story behind the Butterfly Weed is.....
I was given some seeds in trade.... Butterfly Weed, nice Orange Blooms.... I germinated many [yes, WS] and when they bloomed this year, they were not orange, but Pink. So i took a photo, and i believe it was Lea who told me they were indeed Swamp Milkweed. [which were flourishing in nice DRY arid soil, not a swamp ;-) ]
so -- really wanting the orange.... i picked up 3 old used milk jug from WSing, and put in a lot of seeds ... i didnt count, though i probably had about 15 [give or take] seedlings in each milk jug.
so -- i guess they were summer sown.... didnt really matter as they wont bloom til next year.
ROFLMAO --- too funny about Willy the glove snatcher. and very cool of the owners to leave the gloves out for the owners to reclaim.
ah man terese! i am SO jealous!! i would love the pink as well, didn't have luck with any of my asclepias. :-( i will keep perservering though!!
Does anybody have soem of them coop glove s now. I want a few pair s too, but haven't been able to figrue out what siz e I might need. My finegrs and hands are skinny. But I have what some folks call piano fingers. my fingers and hand are long. From my wrist to end of my fingers is liek 8" long or a little bit more and while i need logn enough length, dont' want them so big that my hands get lost in them. I like em to fit kinda snug. So anybody have an idea of what siz e I might need?
Cheles... Ya we wil be starting the first, but folsk wil be gathering and cleanign or addign all the way uo until the last day before evrybody has to send stuff in, so don't worry if you don't have evrythign all ready . As things get ready then ya post.
I have orange butterfly weed. I let it grow wild wherever it want s to aroudn here for the buttrflie s so it gets scattere d all over the place.
Chele.... I'll save you some seeds. I'll go thru my basket and see what i have.
Star -- I have some gloves... I wear medium... though i'd think my hands are just normal size.
they do have a pretty good sizing chart on the web site... i know it's listed in the Chat thread i think.
I'd measure my hands again... but for the life of me - I cant find my tape measure... Maybe Will the cat stole that too. ;-)
You all are so funny. I get a big smile reading so many of your mesages, and consider you my friends.
Sheri ^_^
chele .. i checked and it does seem I used up all the Butterfly Weed seeds...with the exception of the ones that were marked BF Weed, but turned out to be Pink MW.
I have A LOT of Pink and some Purple, which i have not yet tried to germinate.... will do a few in spring of 2010. I can give you the rest if you want them.
Plus, i have a NoID, which could be 'common milkweed' but i'',m not sure.
tcs, I'm sure I'll oink for some of your milkweeds, so please do pack some up for us piggies.
There's an article today on harvesting seeds from the prickly and the painful-
http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2117/
:) Saw that one! I have a datura that is probably that Datura Tatula, thought it was Datura Discolor... they both have the thorny pods... but flowers look like the Tatula a little more... height was more like the discolor, but this was it's first year... I'm afraid it's still a mystery.
Anyway, planted it right in front of my Ginger, not knowing what was coming with the seed pods! Having to push through that to smell the Ginger blossoms is a testament to how much I really want to stop and 'smell the flowers' !
thanks Neil. Good article. I think the only 2 plants i have issues with are Gailllardia and Echinacea. With those, i cut the heads into a coffee can or large glass jar.... then shake the dickens out of it... the seeds fall right out.
OH -- i think i'll start a new thread for the new week....
New thread..... http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1045280/
Star, they have a link to the gloves sizing charts here it is... http://www.palmflex.com/pages.php?pageid=5
My Fingers are about 7" from the bottom of my hand. I take a size Small and on theirchart it says 6.5 for a small so I think you could get a Large, perhaps a Med.. I wouldn't be too worried about your hands swimming in them. Mine fit very nicely and they are very strechy.
The Atlas gloves are made of this wonderful stretchy material, so I'd say go according to the length of your fingers... they won't be too bulky. I love the way I can wash the gloves by just scrubbing my hands together under the hose or the faucet. They're the first gloves I've tolerated well enough to actually wear them regularly like I should. :-)
Starlight, I have dug up my cannas, I have some small ones,
can I put them in the seed swap to keep from thowing them away?
rides. yes you can if folks want them and are willign to pay the postage on their return boxes and also you wil be payign th epostage to get them here.
If you send yoru seed sin a bubbler here and you have lot s coming back and it goe s over 12 ounces then the bubbler jumps up to prioirty rate automatically. and the small priotiy is 5.65 and once it goes over 12 oucne s than it goe s by weight and zone to destination.
As long as folks got plenty of postage to cover what they oink for comign back. I don't care. I just can't affor d all the extra postage for evrybody.
Good to knwo abotu the gloves espcially the washing. That how i always los e my gloves. I wash on my hands and then hang up to dry usually on top of car cuz of t he rack and heat up there so they wil dry fast and I driv eout driveway and forget i have them on there. LOL
My bronze fennel is going to seed right now if anyone will be interested. I just love it for cooking.
Star, I got them give away, already.
How about that??
Rides -- come on over to the new thread.... http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1045280/
when these get too long, others on Dial-up have a hard time with pages loading... so we try to keep them around 200 posts.
See ya on the other thread...
Terese
