Michaela.... have you seen Bronze Fennel?? cool looking foliage and is good for the Swallowtails.
Last year i had some "Cats" munching away on them.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

This is first time I have had experience with lupine, klstuart. I went ahead and planted some out to see if they would grow.
I have plenty of seed if you want to try.
tcs1366, My fenel had several different sizes of Cats on them. I love the smell and I guess the cats love the taste, they were sure munching on them.
Check them out.

I have rue seeds too Michaela it's a host plant for the Black Swallowtails and Giant Swallowtail caterpillars I'll save you some seeds for those if you would like to have some:

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/312/

The children will have to be careful around it because it does cause skin irritations touching the new leaves then being in the sun but then there are a lot of plants that do that, just read the comments in the plantfiles.

They can be WS and drought tolerant.

I also have curly parsley seeds that can be WS.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Very Cool Charlene!!

up here, we dont get as many cats and butterflies ... so seeing one or two is exciting.
I jsut try to provide food for them, just in case........

Does anyone know what this plant is? They were growing in a yard along the street, the house has been vacant for at least 30 years. I collected a pocketful of seeds.

Golden rod, Have you all noticed how pretty the goldenrod is this year.
I also have some of those Primrose flowers/weeds but they are so pretty this year.
Welcome Birdie. so nice for you to join us.

Kannapolis, NC

Jump in, Birdie. If anyone wants bronze fennel seeds, I have plenty! And they grow beautifully. Here's a pupa (I believe that's the correct term) on one of the stems this year, in fact, just a couple of weeks ago:

Seandor I've been meaning to save my lupine seed for months now. I am going to check them tomorrow to see if there is any left. I think I am going to have an onslaught of seedlings next year. I never got to them! Just so you know those will be more of a nostalgia butterfly plant. I've never seen a butterfly nectar at them and the butterflies that use them as a host plant are the Karner Blue which is an endangered species which is only found in a very small area in Concord NH - the only other known population is in the mid west somewhere. Just thought I'd let you know in case you didn't already know that. : )

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I saw all the caterpillars, I should have checked for the Pupa, Shouldn't I?
i was amazed at the number of them on that plant and the different sizes.
Pretty pupa, Hemophobic. Butterflies in spring.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I have a ton of those Primrose weeds growing naturally in my yard. On the plus side they smell very nice. : )

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

My camellia is blooming, i think it is a little early,
I guess it doesn't think so

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Well, I collected some beautiful 4 o'clock seeds today, and some Nicotiana seeds. I took pictures of the plants with the seeds, so I won't forget which is which.

Lynn, I have that primrose in the wild bird garden someone gave me some seeds to it and I really like the flowers but it was so tall and there were so many seeds on it it was scary so I dug the plants out that I planted after I saved seeds and pitched them in the WB garden perrrfect for there. They do have pretty flowers! I never noticed they smell good I'll have to smell them the next time I see some in bloom.

I love the bronze fennel plants but hate the smell that's the only thing about a lot of the Agastaches I love the flowers but don't like the liquorish (?) smell.

Michaela, I'll put your name on some Rue seeds when I run across them :)

ridesredmule, that camellia is sure going to be pretty!

Polkton, NC(Zone 7b)

Hemophobic I sure would like to have some of your bronze fennel. Its growing close enough to me that it might recognize my dirt lol.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Meredith, would you put my name on some of your butterfly bush seeds. Maybe I can get them to grow here in a protected spot.

Maxine

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

What is the best way to write your seed list so that you can cut and paste it when it's time? Any suggestions?

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Mittsy I have my list saved in a word document. I have them divided into 2 seperate lists (annual and perennial) and have tried to include a link to plantfiles (or where ever I can find one with a good description) so you all can look them up before deciding if you want the seed.

Hey Gang - I'm lurking whenever I get the chance but I usually don't have time to contribute much chatter. This math class is killing me and almost every waking moment is spent with my nose in the book. Whoever coined the phrase about the old dog and new tricks sure knew what they were talking about!

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Lala.. Which math class ya taking? I loved math, trig I wasn't really thrileld with, but Algebra wa s my favorite.

I doing my list a s I go and when I get tire d of doing that or if I not ready when the time comes, cuz I always find something, I just add then to the threads and my list.

I got a love seat full of packets nwo that I need to get liste d on my document , so I cna start more batches. Thsi oen time when ya gla d of comemrcials whiel watchign tv. can do packets during them. LOL

I went out the othe r day and gathered more flower heads of the Monarda and then ha d to take a flea soap bath, cuz I cut through the blackberry section of the field and picke dup redbugs that ha d me itching like crazy.

What I wondering is when the season ends I need to get out back and mow that are a down for next year. This the first year I have seen all thes e Monardas out there. I wonder if I mow them down, do ya think they will come back. I have lot s of stems out there and they a good height, but too many weeds and was not abotu to get down on knees and try and dig t he ground to see if they all connecte d to oen plant or sevreal. Anybody happen to know?

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Star -- I have a huge patch of Monarda... just the plain lavender ones [i'll have to dig up the name]
but I cut mine back ... most are cut back already, to about 6". I'd think if you mowed them down -- they would be fine.
Most of mine come back... though i've only had them 2 yrs. but they do spread.....

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

mine are Monarda fistulosa Wild Bergamot

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

Hemophobic - I would surely lovsome of the Bronze Fennel seeds.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Maxine, I haven't saved any butterfly bush seeds yet. I will go check them to see if they have any yet. They probably aren't tripe if they do. Which one were you wanting?

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

What ever you wish to save. I am not hard to please.

Maxine

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Thanks Tsc. I savign as many seeds as I cna off of them. Not a whoel lot for as big as the seed head is.

Oh.. I wil have to go otu and check my butterfly bushes too. Forgto abotu them.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Ugggg - i had no idea that Jacob Cline Monarda did not produce seeds!! what a bummer.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Star mow those Mondra down they will be fine for next year I used to mow mine down every fall but then my neighbor when she cut my field one summer forgot and mowed them down about three times in the summer now they are gone for good lol I have four or five of those white hibiscus with the red eye up there too and do you know she even cut those down that year and they were taller duh!

I just found a whole bag of seeds in paper bags not cleaned from last year in the closet lol I'm just wondering what is in there don't have time to go thru them today LOL I'm sure they will be good that room has been cut off of the rest of the house since dad went in the nursing home so they have been nice and cool and in the dark :)

Southborough, MA(Zone 6a)

Star- Monarda is in the mint family and will grow like crazy, feel free to mow them down. It spreads via runners, like most mints.
I have monarda didyma (the red kind), and I love it, but every year I have so many trades to do as it grows like crazy.
Can't seem to kill it! (not that I want to).

tcs- I'm gonna want some of that Mondara fistulosa when trading time comes, if you have seeds. I've been trying to get that growing for a while, but no luck so far. M. didyma is native to eastern US, M. fistulosa is native to the western US, maybe it just does not like the east coast. :)

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

herb -- I'll have lots of seeds.
I first WD'ed them in `07, they bloomed second year, and they are 4' or so tall. I've cut the tall ones back already - or i'd have taken a photo. Nice Lavender blooms. Susceptible to mold, and i've seen a lil bit on some of mine, but it does not really seem to effect them.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Can anyone recommend which Monarda is least invasive? I had some a while ago, and it got out of control. Took several years to erradicate it. Now, I've apparently forgotten that I swore off the stuff ;-) so I want to try again. Just have to have some in my butterfly/hummer garden!

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Ok guys, I need some advice! I've gotten myself in charge of October's meeting for our neighborhood garden club. I'm having trouble getting a speaker, so it looks like it might end up being me! Of course, I planned it to be something I enjoy, so I think I can handle it. The topic is to be "What can we save for next year, Frugal Gardening!". I've got the seed collecting part down.

What I'm wondering is do any of you have a favorite plant that you like to overwinter somehow each year? Maybe something that survives the winter as cuttings? Has anyone ever saved Begonia tubers (I'm hoping to try that this year.) I'd love to hear any advice on this topic you'd like to share!
