Some ipomoea nils have this kind of leaf. That could be what they are.Karen

Wallaceone - Hopefully, you will get some blooms before the cold weather hits you. Keep us posted. Those leaves are awesome!!! I rarely seem variegated heart-shaped leaves. :-)

Hi Becky and Karen,

It finally is blooming! It is only giving out mutant blooms like these. Becky didnt you have the same thing? It has been very cloudy here all month. I dont know if that means anything I am only a novice grower. Well here she is... Kinda neat I guess lol Barb

This is one of my variegated oval leafed JMG. I tried to get it IDed but never got anything to go on so I have dubbed this one "Cordate Leaf purple blizzard large flower". I think this is a definite Japanese Morning Glory that has a Japanese name but I need a Japanese person to tell me what this is. I saw a picture one time while browsing the internet but I can`t read Japanese.

The seeds I work with on this one can throw both solid purple, rayed purple and rayed purple blizzard so far. I`m still growing out the solids and blizzards seperately and seeing if I can get more blizzards that will not throw solids in the seeds. The oval leaves breed true to self.

Karen that is beautiful! I had one flower like that but not with your leaves. Are those heart shaped leaves or oval leaves? I really love it... Barb

I don`t know why I said oval. In plant terms a oval leaf is a long oval shape. These are heart shaped or cordate.

I have seen JMG mutants that will throw out oval leaves but they tend to change back into side reduced leaves along the same vine. These plants seem to do what they want and break every law of how plants are supposed to behave. lol!

Wallaceone, for me the unknow nil is - Ishidatami

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Barb - I agree with Dany ... it looks very much like Ishidatami or a cross of it! I will have to look at photos of mine when I am at home to see what the leaves on mine looked like. Very pretty! Just look at all those blooms!

, WI

LoL Karen how true they do for sure. Dany that is the flower! It isnt a mutant after all... But the leaves are differnet on mine. This is fun to grow these out to see what happens... :)

Will it pollinate itself for seeds? I do have lady bugs flying around in there if that helps or not. Thank you for helping a home grower..... Barb

Becky we posted at the same time. Lol Thanks I appreciate that.

You all is this normal ? Where the flower comes out on the vine is it normal to have two flowers coming out there. I will go and get a pic lol it is easier to explain with a picture..lol

Barb - Here is a photo of my Ishadatami from a year ago and the leaf shape does look similiar to yours, but ... your leaves have that beautiful variegation to them (or at least that is what it looks like in your photos). And yes, the blooms will flower in clusters on the buds all on a single vine stem. :-) Some of the MGs do that! :-) Yours is just lovely with the variegated leaves! The ladybugs will not pollinate it. They eat aphids and will protect your vines. :-) Maybe moths, bees, hummingbirds, or butterflies will pollinate the blooms! :-)

, WI

Thanks Becky! I never noticed the flowering of clusters before. Neat! I do have some moths in there. That is wonderful to know that they may pollinate it. Thank you, by the way where is your pic I want to see yours..Lol

It does look split petal like Ishidatame and one thing you can gain from this is many of the Japanese varieties can carry for more rarely seen leaf shapes, colors or the recessive variegated leaf ...surprise! You have a special beauty. :)

Here they are in plant files.

I have a question please. How long before the pod matures? I have it hanging high up. I dont want to lose the seeds from them falling. When I should I expect approx. the seeds to be ready? Thanks Everybody... Barb

very pretty and how cool - heart shaped variegated leaves.

the JMG tends to have large seed pods and takes a while to dry (turn brown), a couple of weeks. Becky, what could she do if they have a hard frost? Could she cut the seed pods and dry them inside. I usually let my seeds turn brown before collecting but a neighbor told me that she cut them down when they are green and dry them seperately on a plate. I thought if they were green then they are not "ripe" yet.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

It takes about 30 days from the day after the flower blooms for the pods to be ready. I recommend checking the plants weekly for mature seed pods. I have had the best success with the cut vines in water method when the pods were at least 3 weeks old. Too green and they shrivel up and die.

Thank you Lilimerci and Becky. I at least now have a idea of what to expect. They are in the gh which is heated so no worry of Mr. Frost nipping at his toes. The weather has been fantastic this year. No snow yet. Hugs Barb

I've ripen seeds by placing a cutting with the seed pods still attached in water. I have never had them drying out (w/o water) unless they were very close to being ripe.
