September Gessies #3

And finally...remember Strep 'Sugar Baby' that nobody seems to know where she came from? Well, it's the bloomingest thing I've ever seen! And the blooms are just beautiful! I've really gotta look and see if I can figure out where I got it!

Okay...now I'm done with pictures. LOL

You have a new camera, Amy..........happy for your outstanding photos!!! Love seeing the less common gessies!!

I am growing chiritas left and right.........trying to come up with some kind that Tish doesn't have.............and been making trades for some new ones I am trying.........

No new camera, but I'm learning (after two years! LOL) how to change the settings, manually set the white balance, stuff like that to make the pictures look better. Thanks for the compliment on my photos! :o)

You know how I love the less common Gessies. I'm just odd, I guess. LOL I've sown some seeds that I'm excited about seeing how they turn out! :o)

When you get ready to trade or sell your Chiritas, please let me know. I'll buy or trade for them!

Rain,
The only place I ever saw Sugar Baby was at Neil's Streps. and that's been awhile.I don't know if that helps or not.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am having lots of trouble with brasscoides..........it keeps turning yellow and won't put out new foliage............still trying............same way with liboensis.........jan sent me the species from a show called longganensis........it is getting big........I might fail or LLG failed with what they sent me for liboensis and brasscoides......

Thanks, Lynn! That at least gives me a place to start!

Gail, I wish I knew what to tell you to try. I don't have a lot of trouble with Chiritas. They grow fast and well for me. I just got out of growing them for a while and forgot about them. I look forward to getting more. I really like liboensis. I so wish I could find dielsii.

Amy, you have the most amazing plants and pictures!!

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Rain, were you pleased with your order from Violet Gallery? I want to order some leaves from them today. Thanks!

Shanika, I only got plants from them, but boy was I ever thrilled with them! Superb quality plants, large and healthy, and several had buds. The ones I have pictured above haven't grown much since I got them, so you can see what size they send. (Now, that's because I repotted them into those pots that are too big for them and they're busy putting out roots instead of leaves, but that's my own method of growing that I don't recommend to anyone. LOL) I can only imagine that their leaves would be top quality as well. Hope that helps!

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes my dear, it helps a lot!!!! I have a list of about 42 leaves. My husband is going to kill me!

That's not so many. Use some "woman math" and you come up with 42, which looks a lot like 4+2 and that only equals 6 which isn't that many at all... Or something like that... LOL It's certainly worth a shot! ;o)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Ok, I am going to throw some cold water into this conversation. ^_^

GrowHappy - just remember . . . 42 leaves can grow into 200+ babies real quick. You need to make sure you have space for those 200 babies, unless you are going to keep only 1 or 2 of each baby. And space for these babies is on top of the other plants you have already.

It is fun making leaf orders though, isn't it? I can be upwards of 3-4 dozen myself, then I force myself to cut some from the list . . .

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am the perfect example of too many plants...........I planted so many leaves that now I don't have room to pot them up..................

Yes, but then you have plenty of plants to sell or trade, or give away to friends, or box up to ship to a person just getting into AVs. It's not usually a problem to get rid of extra AV babies. ^_^

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

I may have to sell some more of my other plants on eBay to make room! I just couldn't bring myself to get rid of my orchids and christmas cactus!

I definitely would not be keeping all the babies. I'll trade or give them away!

Ooohh! A plant sale!! LOL Have you thought about selling any here on the DG Marketplace? It's super easy to list them, and you don't have nearly the fees as you do at eBay. Just something to think about. It's not auction style listings, just set your price, but I've found that a lot of eBay buyers shop here, too, and often they're more willing to purchase from here than from eBay.

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Amy you are too funny!!!!!!
I actually had considered that too Amy, but didn't think anyone would buy them on here. I looked a couple of vendors plants on here that had been on here for quite some time and it didn't seem like anybody was buying them. Maybe those were "commercial" vendors who just keep somewhat of a permanent listing of plants?

I've had mixed luck selling on here. Sometimes it's great, and sometimes not so much. But the good thing about it is there's no listing fee on the DG Marketplace. So you can list your plants and if they sell, great! If not, you're not out anything, because you only get charged a very small fee on the selling price.

It's much cheaper to sell here. No listing fee, and the final value fee is less than half (almost just a third) of eBay's final value fees.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

It will kill me, but I have trays of babies ready to plant up and no space left. I might list (and I only kept one of each) the larger ones I have potted up to 21/2" pots............here on DG. The fun is in propagating for me!!!

****I think the best way for a buyer is to get one that doesn't even need to be potted up to the next size for months........that is why I am moving all my babies up that need to be moved up and ready to go............not everyone has all the supplies, etc. ....especially when you are new to growing inside.

What kind of babies, Gail??!! I need info!! LOL I might need to stop looking at eBay and start looking here! I wish more people would sell Gessies here on DG Marketplace.

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Me too Gail!!! I'm turning into a mini you, LOL

I just looked outside to see what plants I still have left to be brought in for the winter. Most of them are so big, too big to sell online. For example, I have a monster epiphyllum hookeri that is completely out of control. A monstera delicosa, a nice big dieffenbachia, a few more cane begonias, some hoyas(that I'll probably never get rid of!!!) and some philodendrons that I could not stand to part with! Am I pathetic or what?

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Amy, I thought about you the other night at the AV meeting. I seem to remember(but I don't rely on that anymore!) you saying that you grew Petrocosmea Momo and that it was a bit finicky???? Was I dreaming on that one? LOL

You could sell cuttings, though. That would make you a bit of money, and cut down on the size of the plants you have to bring in for winter.

I don't know, though, Gail. I think a lot of us repot plants into our own potting mix shortly after getting them, anyway. It might save you time, work, and money for supplies to sell them as they are.

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Ditto, Amy @ saving Gail herself some time, work and money on supplies!

I did grow Pet. 'Momo' and to begin with it was finicky, but the problem was that it wanted to be properly cared for and I wasn't doing that! LOL I figured out what it wanted, and now Pets are probably my favorite of all the Gessies. I have 14 or 15 different kinds.

But sadly, 'Momo' did expire. With everything that went on last year, a lot of my plants declined horribly, and many died. I actually just threw away the last remnants of 'Momo' yesterday. It put forth a valiant effort, but just couldn't make it. I don't blame that on the plant being difficult, though. All my fault.

I need to take pictures of all my Pets, but I moved them off the light stand and into a window that I thought would give them enough light. Not so much... They've got their leaves pointed straight up, begging for more light. I'll put them on the stand and they'll lay back down pretty quick. I might go ahead and snap photos of them as I'm moving them as a "what not to do to your Pets." kind of thing. LOL

This is a pic of Museum of Art , it was a small plant at the time and now my baby is much bigger than the mom , don't know why but it is twice the size of the parent plant and about to flower so I hope to get some better pics of the baby's flowers :) I hope you all have a lovely weekend :)

Oooh, I'd love to see pics of your Pets! and would love some advice on how to care for them and Chiritas.

*sigh* Well, if you're gonna force me to play with my plants... LOL Let me grab the camera and I'll go snap a few, but keep in mind, they're not as pretty as they could be if they had been getting enough light...

Hi Again ,

I just wanted to let Shanika know that the leaves from Violetgallery are great , they send nice size but not old leaves and will often send three if it is a mini , they are very generous people and their plants are very nice and healthy , not pale and anemic looking as many from ebay are , I think if you order from them you will be pleased , I hope by this time of the ordering season they still have what you are looking for , i sent them a list of the plants/leaves I want too before Winter takes plant/ leaf ordering out of my hands :) hahaha for me it maybe should be colder longer to keep me in hand , please let us know if you do order how you rate them , I have never gotten a bad order from them so I hope it will be the same for you :)

Connie :)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Connie - beautiful pic! So glad you posted! Now I'll have something to compare it to when mine blooms!

Even if you don't keep all the babies, you still need the space to put the babies you do keep, until they reach a trading size . . . I'm not trying to be negative, but . . . you can ask Gail, we've talked about this . . . I don't want someone to do too much leaf starting (which results in alot of baby plants) that they get burned out on what could be a wonderful hobby. It can get overwhelming very quickly. It's the same thing that the articles in the AVSA magazine have been saying in the past few issues.

Good point, Nichole. Each person has to know their own limits. ^_^

Shanika, here are my Petrocosmeas. Turns out I have 14 varieties. 'Momo' made 15, but since it's gone, I'm down to 14. I have leaves down, but no plant, of Pet. 'Imperial Butterflies'. Pet leaves are typically slower than other types of leaves, but they produce well. I can't wait to have babies of that one! The rest are actual plants.

Do you sell babies Amy? If yes where?
Sue

I grow my Pets in 3 inch pots. They're regular depth pots, not the squatty pan pots. I fill the bottom third with perlite, then the rest of the way with my regular potting mix (equal parts Miracle Gro potting mix, perlite, and vermiculite). Once they're potted, I sprinkle a thin layer of small lava rocks in the bottom of a clear 9oz dixie cup, just enough to keep the pot from sitting on the bottom of the cup. I never water from the top. I wait until they're almost completely dry, then lift the pot out, fill the dixie cup 1/2 to 2/3 full of water and set the pot back down in. It will soak up as much water as it needs . After an hour or so, I dump the extra water out of the cup, except for just enough to keep the lava rock damp. I rarely fertilize them, and they don't get a lot of light. Super easy plants to grow! ^_^

Here's a picture where you can see the layer of small lava rocks.

Oh oh oh oh Amy! Now I had to go look at all those pic's of your beautiful Petrocosmea's and now I'm wanting to go in search of sellers! I'm thinking of setting up one (ONLY ONE) stand somewhere in this small house and I'm thinking Pets might be a good indoor plant for me because I don't think they get real large (do they?) I am so limited on space!

Geesh, here I go googling again.
