I can't remember exactly what the cost of the stone was... something like $110-140 a ton, and we got 2 ton. We used almost all of it, have a dozen or so odd sized ones left for another bed area too.
bellzy.... Viburnum is on our list as well!!! Love them!
New beds going in... need shady plant suggestions.
Melanie...another shrub you might want to consider is the Fringe Flower, it is evergreen and takes our weather and partial shade. The winter brings a burgundy colored foilage, and we have found them to be fast growing.

Does anyone have a whole shrub pic of Fringe Flower? I think I might need one of these! LOL
Better yet, does anyone have any small plants? I am not good at cutting this time of year.
YES, sheila... and Plant Shed has them for 70% off right now!!! :)
We'll have all the beds ready to plant after today. The guys have been digging since Wednesday. The new compost looks great, but we have too much compost (haha) so I am off now to go spread compost over other beds! They will be happy!!!
Fringe flower is awesome... we just hope they can do well in all shade! This area really is 99% shade!
Does anyone know if there are any Clematis that do well in any shade??? really want one!
Too much compost, LOL.
Pretty plant! Pretty bed, too! What are the purple flowers, the small ones, not the tall obedient plants.
I have been trying to figure out which clematis would grow in shade too. So much info is given by northern states or England where we know we don't have the same conditions. I am growing 'Venosa Violacea' in mainly shade but was planted this year and have not had blooms although looks healthy .

This is a good link to another DG who did a lot of researching into clems for hot climates. http://eveysblissfulgarden.com/clematis/PlantingSuggestions.htm
I would then double check on Clematis on the Web http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemalphasearch.cfm to see if it grows in any aspect...I would take that to believe it could be shade.
I would love to know if anyone else has suggestions.
Well there are not any obedient plants in this bed. So let me say what is from left to right. This was in early spring and on the left is Brazos Penstemon, then lower is Lyreleaf Sage, then at the back a Russian Sage, very short in front Wood Sorrel Oxalis and then Scabiosia to the right, then the full blooms (probably the one you are looking at) is Meadow Phlox 'Natasha".

It must be the phlox. Whatever it is, that's such a pretty bed!
Thanks. It really is a jumbled mess, I am not one to stop and think what I have planted next to what color wise etc. And it was a semi-shade bed until we cut down a large pear tree last year. Now some things are taking off and others saying....who turned on the heat??
I think I would put azaleas in front of the compost pile. They can be trimmed like any other hedge plant.
Sheila's home and garden are beautiful. The front is very welcoming but the back is to die for. Lots of gardeners would be more than happy to have what she and Herman have put together. Paradise on earth.
Christi
Sheila your gardens are gorgeous!!! We have a similar situation in one area, that we took down 3 huge bradford pear trees, and we now have a full sun area... opportunity to plant some sun loving things, EXCEPT the bed is FULL of asian jasmine. PRO... its established, looks great, low maintenance CON... its boring, would take a LOT of work to remove. I'm wanting to just grind the stumps out, plant about 3 new focal shrub/tree things and put large pots in for color... Seems less maintenance for me! If /when hubby gets the drip irrigation converted on the sprinkler system, it will make it less work, too.
Saw some great plants at Marshall Feed (grapevine) yesterday, and Plant Shed. Will go back on Thursday to make purchases, so we can plant next weekend!
Any opinions on Yews? Considering them for an area as well.
I'd better get busy hauling some more compost...oh , and heres some updates!
I have several of the above and love them all. Just a note of precaution, my turks cap covers an area of approx. 8x10 feet. Work all the time to keep it contained. Only have one fringe flower and I want it to be natural so I will soon need to enlarge the bed it is in. I see them at many commercial places trimmed like a hedge...not for me.
Good luck.
Christi
Okay, Christi, I need to see your fringe flower so I'll know what I"m looking at when I get one to plant! LOL
OMG... BEAUTIFUL fringe flower...(Lorepetalum) in 3 gal on sale for $8.99 at Plant Shed. Gorgeous burgundy plants!!!
lou... i had a turks cap before, and yes, it took over a space about 4x8... i did hard prune it each early spring and it came back well.... I love it so much that I will put a couple in. It seems the ones I've seen in the neighborhood, in mostly shade, are not as tall, so I am just hoping for FLOWERS on mine!!!
hubby is putting in bender board edging right now, and enlarging 2 beds... already not big enough, he says... oh well, less grass.... and we still have about 2c yds of compost left!
They are almost a staple at HD. Got mine there a couple of years ago for not much. Need to take some pictures.
Thanks for the words Christi. Melanie and the DH aren't beginners on landscaping. They moved and left a georgeous labor of love that I was fortunate enough to visit. Their pond had two waterfalls. One to the left in the picture and another to the back on the right with a stream going into the big pond. Wonderful flower beds and pathways all around it designed by the DH if memory serves me.
BTW
Mel.... Nice to see DH still looking fit enough, as are you to tackle the job! LOL!
Everyone... FW Botanic Gardens has their fall plant sale on October 10th from 9-2pm.
Thanks, dear Sheila. I'm glad to be back on here...can't believe I first started in 04... Yes, we are also fortunate to be gardening in the shade, cause I just can't handle the heat, like we did on that half acre of plants!!!
WOW, you saved a pic of our pond! We love and miss that pond... still trying to scheme in a way to add a pondless waterfall to this yard we have now... and if the pool looses enough votes... it might be turned into a waterfall then! (At what point does a costly pool repair/remodel outweigh the advantages of selling a home with a pool?) just thinkin ahead...
Oh, the Botanic garden sale... is it still as much of a "mosh pit run for your lives" sale as it used to be??? LOVED that sale, tho!
Yes, it does get pretty rushed at times. I am a Botanical Society member and get to go on Thursday and get 10% off. It is totally worth the money to shop with a bit more leisure and to get first picks.
Of course I have all the pictures I took on my computer. I love to look back at things like that when time permits. I would opt for a hot tub and a fish pond over a swimming pool anyday. Kids grow up and go to the lake not Mom's house. LOL! Besides as you get older the whirlpool sure makes a body feel good. I am thinking ahead too, don't have one YET!
Loved this shot too!
I can bring you turk's cap if you want. May have a sweet autumn clem, will check.
wow... bananna yes, I need 2 turks caps, and 1 clem... hoping that they do well in shade!!! So excited to start gardening now with our new enriched beds!
thank you.
I have to check on the clem....
no problem. I am grateful for anything.
I checked the sweet autumn and unfortunately it is quite an old plant and I couldn't make a dent in the roots which is near a Mexican plum....even with all this rain lately. I did check in COTW and it does much better in the sun. I did find a little seedling which is probably Jackmanii. No problem to dig that. Most probably would need to be grown out in a well amended pot with excellent drainage(can be sunk in the ground for extra protection)
no problem bananna... I had decided to wait till spring and buy one ready to go... since they have to be cut back every spring anyway...
I had a jackmanii at our last home, and loved it. I just love clematis and wish I knew which ones worked in shade more. We have ONE area that gets full sun, but is filled with asian jasmine, and I am tempted to dig a hole and plant a clematis next to the fence.... at least they would get their "feet shaded" like they want!
Yes, I would love to know too. I have heard V. Betty Corning blooms well and I remember reading Little Nell is supposed to brighten a shady spot, which I do have but only for one year...did get a few blooms. If you go to the Vine Encyclopedia you can narrow the search to Northern aspect.
