Crinum Angustifolium

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

I did a search for this crium but didn't find a whole lot of information. Anyone growing this one that can post a picture? I just bought a few of this one plus Crinum 'Sangria,' Crinum procerum var. splendens (Queen Emma's Purple Crinum), and Crinum spp 'Stars and Stripes.' They were all quite expensive at the nursery except for the Crinum angustifolium. The Crinum angustifolium was labeled "Agave" at a local nursery and were $1.99 each. They gave me a deal on 30 of them for $1 each. I'm going to plant them between the plumerias in the backyard. Here are some of them in a bed.

Hi Clare!! I have the angustofolium-it has white, spider-like blooms. Its a good bloomer, blooms all year sporatically once it gets some size to it. Its not the strongest scent-actually more mild than I was expecting.
I have the Sangria also, and it started to bloom the 3rd summer-not a heavy bloomer so far, but one plant has bloomed 3 times this summer-so not bad-but no scent at all :( But the foliage is very nice and very hardy here.
I also have the procerum var. splendens that has not bloomed yet, but soon I think as its very large. I don't think thats the Queen Emma though. If I am wrong then I will be very happy as thats the one that I really want! I think there are several different tropical purple leafed versions. I will know when it blooms. Stars and Stripes is nice too. What a great deal you got!! Really good deal. You go girl!!

I have several pictures of plumerias that I took that I have been meaning to post in plumerias. The best is the EWC #3-really cool looking hot pink-very bright.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Nice adeniums! I love how they bloom. That sangria is really big for $ 2!! Usually those are easily $ 20.00

I grow a few of these large crinums, but they need a LOT of space. The smaller ones like Stars and Stripes make great companion plants for plumeria.

Yuma, AZ

Woow looking good Clare!
Anyone know where to get crinum through the mail? They only sell one var. here?
Thanks,
Davie

Hi guys! Thanks so much for your replies.

Terry, thanks so much for letting me know what to expect. I'll have to do some research on the splendens. A friend of mine had the splendens blooming at his place, and the scent of the flower was fantastic! I was hooked immediately. It's too bad that the Sangria is scentless, but I won't yank it out of the garden like I usually do with scentless flowers! LOL! The purple-leaved ones and the Stars and Stripes were pretty expensive. I think Stars and Stripes was around $30 for a five-gallon, and the purple-leaved ones were about $34 for a five-gallon and $15 for a one-gallon, but the crinum angustifolium were a steal at $1 each. I can't wait to see all your plumeria flowers! My Tahitian Sunset has the biggest flower head that I've ever had this year. It's amazing. I hope your TS is blooming for you too.

Thanks, Hetty, for the spacing info. I'm afraid that I probably planted them too close together given their eventual size. I may have to pull one or two out or thin. I'm glad to hear that they make nice companion plants for plumerias.

Thanks, Davie. Check Dave's Garden Marketplace. I think I saw some over there. I'll let you know if I find another source. I can send you a couple of mine since I'll probably have extra.

Thanks for the picture, Dale!

Here is one of my splendens. Its getting too big for the pot! If it smells great than I will be happy regardless of what it is. Stars and Stripes doesn't strike me as very scented either. I think the splendens will be the best for scent.

here is my newest flower-Chloe. Isn't she getting big?

Thumbnail by tigerlily123

My splendens is about 7 ft tall and about that wide...

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Wow! That splendens is so beautiful -- even without flowers. I hope it is wonderfully fragrant. Chloe is the best flower of all. That face is so precious. I would cover her face in kisses if I were there.

Oh my gosh, Hetty. That is huge. I'm in big trouble in my little bed.

Clare, I have a bunch of crinum I am about to dig out. I bought them all on eBay and some were expensive. The ones that have bloomed have bloomed the typical pink so, so much for ebay. LOL.

Do you have any interest in them?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Clare, have you seen this one? Crinum amabile

I bought this twice from Buried Treasures in 2 coops and got a 3rd for a gift also. All times they were huge. My trouble was they died over winter and I am in Zone 9B.

Never one to give up and save some money, LOL, this last time I have kept it inside and it is growing great. No flowers yet.

I do not know if Buried Treasures has their act together. Seems every couple of years they disappear for awhile and customers get very unhappy with them.

Kell, I'm definitely interested in them. Maybe I can trade you some plumerias for them? I just bought some adeniums from Chris, and his feedback definitely scared me. The adeniums were a little slow to ship and were covered in spider mites when they arrived, but he says he is trying to get his business back together after a battle with an illness. Thanks for the link. Those golden ones look cool. That amabile is a pretty one.

Davie, check out that link Kell provided.

I owe you Clare for that box 2 years ago. I will try to get them dug out in the next week or so but realize I am pathetic and a procrastinator of great accomplishment. But they all have your name on them for sure! Send me your new address.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Kell, you are so sweet. I'd love to send you something for them in any case. There's no rush at all. I'll dmail you.

While you all are talking about these amazing plants.. There is one in my yard that producing pups and some of them are getting quite large. Pray tell, how are they removed without killing the mother or the babies?

Hap

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Hap, I really don't think you can kill the mother plant by removing pups, but it is an awkward task. I would recommend that you wait after a rain, when ground is soft. Then, using a narrow shovel, get it in between mom and pup and push down until you can separate. Repeat as necessary. They will pup the very next season.

The first time I removed pups I actually whacked my large mother plant entirely to about 6-8" from the ground. Then, it was very easy to remove the pups with a regular shovel. However, I don't recommend this. The big crinums really look their best BIG. Rather than sizing back, it is better to put a spot where you can let it do its thing. I don't think I will whack the mother plant again. and I am just going to let the pups grow right where they want. I am talking about crinum procerum var. rubrum which some say may be the same as Queen Emma, I dunno.

Clare, my large purple crinum cost me $25 for a pup. yes, they are pricey.

PS: Within 1 yr of whacking to the ground, I had about 5-6 full leaves. It grew fast. However, if I had left the mother plant along, I would have one gigantic crinum rosette. I think I originally whacked it in early spring. Then 1 yr later I had a decent plant again, just not as full.

This is what I have. See the full view pic posted by ceejaytown? I have seen one about twice that size, but ceejay's is big, and people need to know that when planting. It can become one gianticus plant that can overshadow everything else in a bed.

The 2nd pic posted by RonniePitman reminds me of how mine looked 1 year after I had whacked. Nowaways it is about 3 times the size shown in RPitman's pic. I don't have a good pic to post now.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

the only other crinum I have is this one:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/93083

I don't really like crinums (vossner ducking)

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Plants Delight is a good place to go for Crinums-they have a good selection.

Kell-that crinum that you got from Buried Treasures in a coop-I wonder if that was the "pink" crinum that I got in one of their coops a yr or so ago. Mine is huge, and like 1000 pups on it, but no blooms. I think is is far more interested in pupping than blooming...lol

I think that crinums don't like to be moved. Pick a spot and leave it. I can believe that it is a monumental chore to get babies off the clump!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Vossner,

It has been said that it's a Queen Emma and she is beautiful and enormous. Pubs will be coming off shortly.

Thanks,

Hap

Here is what I am talking about with the confusion that I have with the name "Queen Emma" . Look at this link-scroll down halfway and you will see 3 crinums listed (all of which I have seen QE called) http://www.plantlist.com/list/flc08.htm According to this (and a few other sources that I have seen) the true QE is C. augustum. Not procerum, which is what I have, or amabile. What do you guys think?

You are probably wondering why I care so much as they are pretty similar, its because when I lived in Hawaii, they were all over and smelled so good, so I wanted to try to replicate some of Hawaii here, and that scent brings back so many memories. If I were super rich, and my kids weren't all here, then I would move back in an instant!

Thanks for showing me Jerry. It is beautiful. That is unfortunate about the lack of scent though-gotta have the scent!! lol Because yours doesnt smell, it makes me think that its not the true QE, because QE smells very strong, very fragrant. Judging from the leaves, I think you have the procerum var. splendens, like me. The leaves look almost greenish red, and I think the QE's leaves are more purple? These are just guesses on my part. This is very good info though-thanks again Jerry. I have two of the procerum-if they prove to be scentless, I will track you down and send you one of them...lol

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

I have the variegated one too, and I agree-no scent, but interestingly the bud is also variegated-did you see that too?

Very little on my my spider lily.My mistake not a spider lily. Jerry

Tigerlily, I have no clue what color it is. The bulb was huge though when I got it, or rather them each time. My latest still hasn't bloomed, I wonder if it will while it is inside. I do not know why I kept it in all year. Next spring I will put i tout for the summer.

I had the biggest Queen Emma a few years ago and loved it. Susie, (Calalily here) sent it to me. It must have weighed over 10 pounds. Sadly, one year it got fertilize pellets in the crown and that was that. Rot. Do not tell Susie. LOL

I went thru a huge crinum lustful period. You do not see them here at all. I had bought some amaryllis crossed with crinum bulbs (I think Amarcrinum) at HD 1 year. I love amaryllis bulbs. So that cross got me going. I will say I had loads of bloom stalks and they bloomed periodically all season. But my yard is small and they get huge. My husband dug out loads of them a couple of months ago and the bulbs were just so huge. I could not believe it. He did not get them all out evidently for they came up again. He had to dig so deep to get them all.

Now I have another bed where they must go. Those I am giving to Clare. Most came from eBay and were supposed to be fancy colors but none that have bloomed so far are different, all pink.

Today I found some so cool hybrid amaryllis belladonnas. # are NEON pink! One white flushed pink and the a few dark but not NEON pink. I am so excited. I bought some from a farmers's market 2 years ago and then never planted them. I could kick myself. I have been looking for the NEON ones for sale since. They sell them this time of year bare bulb but with the flowers attached so you can be sure of the color that is if you can find them for sale at all.

Anyone here ever see a Brunsvigia Josephinae? So cool.

Thumbnail by Kell
San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I just bought 2 bulbs that are either seedlings of a Brunsvigia Josephinae or one that was crossed by insects so Brunsvigia Josephinae X a white with gold throat Amaryllis Belladonna. Either way so cool.

Quite large! Here is 1 flower from the burst of flowers.

Thanks for the info., Nery, on the growth habit. I'm always glad when people warn me that I plant will get huge ahead of time while it's still small. I've had other plants get huge on me that nobody told me it could grow like that. If you really don't like them and want to dig them up, I'll pay for shipping to me! LOL!

Terry, my big purple one in the picture above is wha the nursery labeled the 'Splendens.' The greenish purple one that is much smaller was labeled 'Sangria.' A friend of mine had one that looked like the 'Splendens' at his house. I had no interest in criums until I smelled the flower, and I was enthralled. His had to be a QA because it was very fragrant. Then I ran across the 'Splendens' at a nursery and thought it was the same as his so I bought it. It is very beautiful, but I have to admit that I was kind of hoping the blooms would be fragrant -- at least in that particular bed.

Kell, I would totally buy a co-op that had those beautiful variegated criums and, of course, the AeAe. Man! I wonder what their prices are like. Those red flowers are beautiful. What an unusual-looking plant.

Crinum angustifolium is native to this area and grows in wet, swampy places near or along creeks. They die back in the dry season (winter). They're easily transplanted when young or small. Our other native, Crinum uniflorum, is smaller and grows in wet ground or standing in shallow water. The photo is of angustifolium.

Clare, strangely, the var. crinum is not any pricier than any of the others. I have one and it not as happy as my giant purple one. Back to it being QE, I can go along w/ that, except that whatever I have is so purple whereas it seems to me that QE has greenish tints. My purple whatever crinum has a fragrant flower. The Hannibal's dwarf has not bloomed.

I posted about the size b/c it reminded me of my experience w/ a fig tree. When I got it it was a cute little plant in a 1 gal pot. Label said can be grown as shrub. In less than 2 years I had a full grown tree. Thankfully, it just happened to be in a place where I could grow a tree, but man! it could have been a big plant fiasco

Hiya Kellie girl, I adore the brunsvigia. Never heard of it. I want it. Also, I'm surprised to see you had a thing w/ crinums. You guys have phormiums, which are much prettier and structurally look much the same. I have 17 roses to plant and this, after I was officially done w/ getting any more roses. what is wrong w/ me????

TXbigleaves that var. crinum is beautiful, I hope mine looks like that one day.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That is such a cool nursery, Clare. We need to be able to buy from there. LOL. I do wonder about the prices. We need a nursery friend to inquire for us.

Nery, why are you surprised about me lusting after crinums? LOL I am just going down the plant list. Have to make it to the end before I die.

I never equated phormiums with crinums ever. I am not sure I can now either. LOL BTW I am so off phormiums. I still have a lot but the best ones, regardless of what they say do revert to dull colors. I just tossed a huge Jester which was such a great pink, that is until it reverted.

I LOVE cordylines now. They have some great colors and have not reverted yet on me. Most do a tree though eventually but not Cordyline banksii Electric Pink. That stays ground level. They go thru winter great too.

Thumbnail by Kell
East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

hmmm. interesting to read that they revert.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Tropicbreeze, your crinum is lovely. I'm confused about what mine is now. Here's a pic below. Does this one look like C. angustifolium? The leaves are very stiff.

Thanks, Nery, for the info. I too did that with a yellow-flowered jasmine from Logee's. When you buy their plants, nearly everything reads "two to three feet in a container." I planted this jasmine in the ground, and it got to be ten feet tall and wide in no time so the whole thing had to come out as it got way too big for the space. Brugs were like that too. I think I need that var. crium. Nothing is wrong with you -- you go girl! You, Kell, and me just like things of beauty;-) Nothing wrong with that!

Kell, I have a couple Cordylines that I planted too. That's a pretty one. I have Cordyline australis 'Red Star,' Cordyline australis 'Torbey Dazzler,' and Cordyline fruticosa 'Miss Andrea.'

Thumbnail by Clare_CA
noonamah, Australia

Clare, yours looks a bit more like the one in this photo - C pedunculatum. But if they've been doing some breeding you just never know what they've come up with. My photos are plants in habitat so I can be sure of what they are.

Pedunculatum can grow into a very large clumping plant, I've seen some quite huge ones growing in the open in swampy ground.

Angustifolium growing (naturally) around my place never gets that big and it's dormant over the dry season (winter).

A synonym for angustifolium is Crinum asiaticum var angustifolium, and for pedunculatum is Crinum asiaticum var pedunculatum. So, it's not surprising there's some confusion around.
