CLOSED: Seed Junkie Chit Chat - Newbies Welcome 9/11/09
Hi everyone, I hope everyone is in good spirits and good health (on that note - get well soon cue!). I must say I think I have the potential to get very addicted to seed collecting. Keeping up with the seed junkie chit chat has gotten me inspired. I cut open an ambrosia melon last night and the first thing I thought of (even before thinking to take a bite) was collecting the seeds! I grabbed a plastic lid from the counter and scooped them all out. Then I told my DH to clean them off for me while I cut the melon. Apparently he got inspired too, because he handed me back the clean seeds arranged on the lid in a Yin Yang. I thought it was hilarious so I took a picture to show you all. I can't wait to grow some yummy melons! Does anyone know when I should plant these?
-Brittany
Brittan,
It is even better when you pass the addiction on to those closet to you!! That was fast. We will have to find someone from Ca or zone 8 anyway to help you decide when to plant them.

Now if I could just pass on my love for tomatoes to him, life would be perfect. He doesn't like them in anything. I don't blame him though, he's only ever tasted the boring grocery store kind. My grandma used to grow delicious weird looking (now I know they are called heirloom) tomatoes. Maybe if I grow some of those he will change his mind...hehe...now I'm thinking.

WOW Tubby, sounds like your garden is still going strong. I love tomatoes. My favorite food has ALWAYS been homemade vegetable (tomatoe) soup. Next, is tomatoe sandwiches. LOVE EM!
Well, I pre cook all my vegies and Then put hamburger meat in a BIG pot. Add fresh tomatoes and when cooked down, add the vegies cook together ( diced potatoes, okra, different beans, carrots -what ever you happen to like, cook all together and add corn last so it don't cook too long,) and serve with cornbread. When it's ready call me.
Good night all. Talk tomorrow. I'm beat.

Tubby - mange is a general terms for a number of skin afflictions on dogs and cats.. all caused by different types of mites and is most often referred to as Feline Scabies. its suggested that you take the cat to a Vet to determine the type of mite causing the problem. However, if this is not an option for you, try this option.
"While the Notoedres mite can be killed with many of the same products used to treat dogs with scabies, most of them are NOT safe to use in a cat. Cats are much more sensitive to some of the insecticides that are safe to use in the dog. The current recommended treatment for cats is to clip all long hair and then bathe the cat with a gentle cleansing shampoo. After the shampoo, a 2 to 3% lime sulfur dip (Lymdip) is applied to the entire surface of the cat. Some cats may require a sedative to be properly bathed and treated. This is repeated every seven days until the condition resolves and may require 6 to 8 weeks of treatment."
hope this helps,
Cue
You might just call your vet's office and see if they sell a shampoo you can use also. Man, the thought of giving our cats a bath once a week! Reminds me of the joke about putting the cat in the toilet, quickly closing the lid, flush several times. You get the picture. LOL!
He is traveling Dr. Comes to your house. No office.Appts Just leave message of cell phone..She in bad reception area..
Tubby,
Hi honey,
If you want an old farmers recipe for curing mange, if all else fails, try coating him with used motor oil after clipping the hair. I know it sounds rediculous but, I tried EVERYTHING the vet could through at it and even the feed store! Then some old farmer asked me why I was doing all that "crap". Said clip the hair and use USED motor oil (why used, I don't know) on the area. I covered half the cat...lol...and keep it covered two weeks...cleared it up clean as could be. Cue is right about what it is. And the recommended cure. She is VERY knowledgible and gives excellent advise. I spent a furtune on mine until I got to the oil. It might be a good idea to go the conventional way first but, I'll never put my cat or dog (or my wallet) through all that again. Just my two cents.
Hugs,
Jamie - a wealth of useless crap and old farm methods...lol...
LoL this way there's just one bath at the end!
Hugs
I recieved a little box of bulbs yesterday..My brain is dead..Who do say thanks to...Sorry I can't remember.Might be lack sleep.. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it..LOL

Little box of bulbs is from me TT. Lilly bulbs and a few Glads.
Good morning everyone.... I've used the motor oil thing on a dog for the mange..It does work... I dont own any cats so not sure about them...
It rained here all night..All during the football game last night...ughhh....Things we do for the love of our kids....Sitting 3 hours in the pouring rain....
I dug up some nice hardy looking coneflowers off the side of the road yesterday on my way home from a meeting.... Dress clothes high heels and all, down the side of a hill..The ground was all wet and my heels kept sinking in the ground, ha making it hard to climb back up the hill with my shovel and a bucket full of dirt and flowers..... The things we do for the love of our flowers...... I did leave some their for next year.....
I have irises to get planted today, but the weather man says its going to rain most all day...The garden is all wet already, Supposed to get 3-6 inches by Tuesday...I dont want my irises to sit out that long before getting planted... Guess I'll put on my boots and get them planted before the next rain storm moves in....My son has tilled the garden so much it must be knee deep out there by now...
I started some daylilies from seeds this summer...Im proud of myself because before this summer I didnt even know they made seeds...Now I will be checking out everyones daylilies for those blessed seeds lol...
Hope you guys have a great day...
Look at all those lil sprouts in my window seals...My kitchen looks like a greenhouse...cant sit at the table for all the flowers...
Even if the heels were ruined... It would be a great sacrifice for the flowers...I'd rather have flowers any day...I ended up with about 10 pieces of rooted coneflowers to spread around those 2 LG I made...Im ready for winter to be over and spring to arrive already and it hasnt even started yet...
I am literally laughing out loud huney! My DH thinks I'm crazy for all of the adventuring I do in flip flops. You are so awesome for doing that in heels! I would have done the same thing. :-)
I cant pass up a pretty flower... I carry my shovel and bucket everywhere... Willing to go thru hell or high waters....
well I got all those irises I ordered from elizabethtown planted.... Wasnt a bad job at all... ground was soft and easy to dig in...
We have someone complaining about all our chit chat in the seed trading forum...Shame...
I never saw or heard of so many flower and seed junkie NUTS in all my days. I think Starlight got you all beat, but you are close. For you that missed starlight's adventure, it's a "must read." I laughed and cried all day the day I read it. Couldn't stop. My face was so red and swolen from crying- it wasn't funny. I thought she was "one of a kind",
Now here you guys go.
And if it makes you feel any better, I think that winter is very near. At least here, as we've already had 2 light frosts, and it's been getting down in the high 30's low 40's ever night this week and some last. Highs are in the 50's and 60's. Really great weather for planting things tho! LOL! Kelly, I like our weather better than your heat wave!
Hello friends.. I think we are being uprooted... http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1037494/
Sorry I posted this so much but I didn't want you all to just leave me uprooted.
They say our roots are here to stay. :-)

Oh Skellogg, I like your weather too.
It sure is nice for working outside! Personally, can't deal with the 100 + weather! So glad we only get a few days of it a year (usually.) LOL! And my roses are loving it!
Hollyhock you worry too much. We're doing nothing wrong. I offered to help them if they needed help finding seeds to trade.
ON the thread-don't want to make anybody mad, there is one with daylily seeds free for envelope.(just a heads up)
Hey ya'll! Just wanted to change the subject and tell you guys that I planted 35 Daylily fans in my lasagna bed this morning that I got from a dear trading friend in TX! And...I found red spider lilies in a couple places in my yard yesterday! Woohoo, so you know I will be diggin those puppies up! And get this.. the coolest thing EVER happened to me yesterday. My DH sent me in to town to get gas for the lawnmower so I figured I would stop and get more cardboard boxes for my ever growing lasagna beds. As I was picking up boxes, I looked over and saw an ENTIRE box full of Gladiola Bulbs, boxes of wildflower seeds, and herb garden starter kits! I mean there had to be $100 worth of stuff in this box. So I went back in the store and told the clerk, "Either somebody made a huge mistake, or it's my lucky day" She said I could HAVE THEM, that they put them out there to get rid of them.. I was like "SCORE!!!!!" That to me is life's way of paying you back when you do good for others without expecting anything in return.. Just wanted to share tee hee hee
I cant stand the extreme heat either and the humidity is terrible here during the summer...Spring seems to go so quickly...Thats my time of year because most of the flowers I have are bulbs and thats when they are in bloom...IM trying to incorporate flowers that bloom in the summer and winter...I'm sure I'll get there before to long....Feel free to donate late blooming flowers if you have some to spare lol....I promise they wont go to waste...
I am curious to what type of moth this is... and also Do you guys know what of flowers the lil yellow ones are... I dug them up yesterday too....
wow Mechelle... that was your lucky day....
WOOHOO Mechelle! Great Score!!! How fun is that? Makes us all want to go out driving around looking for boxes with goodies in them!
Such a waste for store to throw them away.. why not put a box out and give them away..Im sure someone ...me-me-me would grab them
LOL, don't worry I fully intend to share but you have to go to my auction which ends tomorrow night and BID BID BIDI!!
I do have some other cool things I bought yesterday to add to the surprises and seeds, better go bid! Hurry!
I don't want to be rude here, but I have to say this: I hate anal retentive, negative , always follow the rules killjoys.... That's all!
Well, don't know much about following the rules types, as I never have been much for following rules. Are there rules for chit chat? LOL! Too many rules confuses me!
lol ... well If some people see everyone getting along...or see that things are going along smoothly they just have to throw a kink in it...Lets just keep on being who and what we are...
