What's happening in your early fall garden?

And that's why I don't get involved much with groups. Isn't DG (usually) a nice departure from that nonsense? Good catch, Surf. We get so many little yellow and black birds, I get dizzy trying to pick them out.

When I talk with people who think they are 'the superior lifeforce' I always have wanted to say to them>

Stop talking - you are getting snot all over me or

This conversation is snot for me.

ooooh, that's a nice pic. I like 'superior lifeforce' - very good description.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

We seem to have had a similar 'run-in' with a birding group when we once had a "backyard birds" thread here on the CA forum. HMMMM!!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Yeah, some get pretty snippety, don't they?

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

Yes, DG IS a nice departure from those "superior life forces" out there!

Group hug, everybody! I'm feelin' the love!

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

Don't get too close....I have a bad cold.

LOL! Hope you're feeling better soon. A cold in this heat? Bummer.

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 10b)

Jasperdale, If you ever get up to Santa Ana I would be happy to give you all the Japanese Anemones you want. I have a double lavender and a single white. They don't bloom well for me but they sure spread! I think mine are in too deep shade, with tree roots for competition. They are just starting to bloom now.

Thanks, Carol. I'd love to have some. Let me know when you're ready to divide them, etc.

Any time you're going to be in the area! D-mail me and I'll give you my phone #.

Excellent. I will. Thanks !

wcgypsy,
Your photos have convinced me that I need some salvia. Let's talk. : - )
Surf, here is your hug from me ~HUG~! Don't pick on DaletheGardener, I already had a cold too. Seems to start every year when the kids go back to school . . .
OCCAROL, please post a photo (if you can) of your Japanese Anemones. I don't believe I have ever seen them.
Yesterday, DH and I had the pleasure of visiting DesertPirate at his place of employment. I really enjoyed talking to him, and am so sorry that I won't be able to attend the RU. Sigh : - (
Seeing DP helped though. : - )
I couldn't resist taking some photos. Here's one of our favorite Pirate out doing what he has to do.
This field used to be a community garden until the school decided there was too much liability. Not sure what plans DP has for it when it is cleaned up.

Took this one hoping to capture some of the b.flies, but they move quick. Still, nice bones, and in another year that utility box will be hidden! : - )

A pink geranium!

A cherry tomato growing in the abandoned (except by DP) community garden area.

Look at what DP did with a broken twig that he acquired last spring from a fig tree. And it's already bearing fruit. I think he said he just planted it this last spring. : - )

A small b.fly on lantana. Don't know what kind of b.fly. There were a lot of them flittering around. : - )

DP told me what these are, pity I already forgot what they are called. He whipped out his knife, and cut me off a slice of their fruit to taste. Sweet initially, then tart. I had no idea they were edible. DP says they make a great jam. I believe him.
Love those fragrant white flowers. Grow all over the place here in O'side.
Can not grow them where I live. : - (
Hope to get photos of the landscaping around here today.

We found a bug, but don't know what kind. Told DP I'd post a photo, so you all can help us figure it out! LOL!

Photo of DP followed by my DH. Showing us one of his median gardens.

I really love what DP has done here. You may recognize that plant at the base of the stop sign. It is the tomato he was talking about. It seems quite happy there, spilling over the curb. He has quite a mix of plants in this median garden. I tried to get photos of all of them, even if I don't know their names. This is an overview, and close ups of individual plants to follow.

From this angle, you can see that the tomato only appeared to be under the stop sign. In this photo it is in the center lower point of the triangle median planter. I hope that made sense! : - )
That's DP standing on the curb by the Stop sign.

Heck, look at those Cannas! Good job, DP.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

This is a flower that is growing at DP's feet in the previous post. Forgot what it is called. I like it as a sprawling groundcover, and it's given me some ideas for a problem area at home. So what is it?

Thumbnail by SingingWolf
Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I was getting there KC, his cannas are all gorgeous, and considering what he started with, they have exceeded his expectations! : - )
That last flower was so pretty I took a close up.

I figured you would, we're cross-posting! I've seen that pink flower lots of times, but don't know the name of it!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Couldn't resist this photo. That 'mater looks like it's ready to take over the parking lot! Look at how tall those cannas are in comparison to DP! Some of the cannas are even taller!

I will crosspost with you any time, KC. : - )
I really had a good time yesterday. This is a much better photo of DP out standing in his work garden! : - )

Thumbnail by SingingWolf
Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I really liked the way the veggies and the flowers look all intermingled in this photo. Another approach to ground cover! Practical too, 'cause you can eat the fruits or veggies. You'll have to ask DP what all is growing here. I just enjoyed it. : - )

Tomato blossom, and if you look close you can see a couple of green 'maters.

Gosh, this internet is sooo slow.
Does anyone recognize this canna? : - )

Thumbnail by SingingWolf

Same planter as above. Wider view of same area as in the above photo. The canna from the previous post is just to the left in this photo and out of the frame, except for a part of the leaf.

That looks so much better than the usual regimented plantings seen at most businesses. IMHO!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I was surprised to see this beautiful fuchsia sheltered by the canna. Doesn't the plumbago in the background look great with the fuchsia?
CatSmiling, I really thought you'd like this one and the next one too.

Well, the links didn't work either ...sorry

I have got to say that it was a delightful surprise! : - )
I love fuchsias!

Rats OCCAROL, that can be so frustrating, but it okay, I'll bet Ima knows the cannas. At least I can look them up when I get home. The effort is appreciated. : - )
Speaking of cannas. A different kind of yellow.

SW; Your photography is flattering. To answer a couple of your questions.....the Canna you asked about is a 'Richard Wallace', the purple flower is an Osteospermum (trailing African Daisy) and one minor correction, the little yellow bloom is actually on the cantaloupe vine that is intertwined with the tomato, not on the tomato.

The cantaloupe vine does make a nice seasonal ground cover. That particular part of the bed was a little bare waiting for things to "fill out". The cantaloupe provided a nice camouflage for otherwise bare dirt and also provided me with my daily intake of fruit for quite a few weeks. LOL.

I've harvested 17 melons from that vine so far. Unfortunately there's only one right now that's ready, so the RU will only get a taste, and not a meal. I have 10-12 more on there right now ranging in size from that of a marble to the size of my fist.
