Roundish shape= similar to a hydrangea bloom.
Repeat bloomer - has a flush of bloom (usually in spring) then will bloom later in the year, something like a daylily has rebloom.
Continuous bloom - starts blooming in the spring, and continues through the blooming season, usually through fall.
Maybe someone can explain it differently.
funny,laughing,giggling people PART TWO.
I think you did a remarkable job, Annette.
Thanks, Christi. Sometimes I get my fingers crossed up on this keyboard, and not sure if I explain things clearly! There is no way to put inflections on this thing. Too bad we can't write in a manner that reflects that.

do you mean to tell me that there are some roses that bloom from spring till fall? in texas? in july and august?
like a hydrangea bloom? how does he make them look like that? you mean the whole bush looked like a hydrangea bloom when it was in full flower?
Yes, full flower, execpt on a larger scale.....it's all in your perception, much like putting your hand up between a light source and a blank wall. Sometimes rabbits, sometime jackalopes!
Yes, there are some that bloom that long. Seven sisters usually does it for me, also knockout. This year has been an exception. Ike knocked out some of mine.
if a rose is listed as continuous bloom then i can expect it to bloom all summer here?
do you guarantee it? lol
There are some that should give you really good bloom in your zone. I'm no expert, but with our humidity, I would go with antique roses. They are not as fussy as the hybrid roses. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. I like to give mine afternoon shade. Tomorrow I will be working outside, and will see what I have blooming. I know Knockout, Nearly Wild and Eutin had buds the other day. I also have Veilchenblau. I just wish it bloomed longer.
me too. veilchenblau i like.
I am very ignorant of roses but have discovered the hard way that I have no luck whatever with grafted roses. I have some now that I am going to just throw out. The don't grow and they won't die, just sit there looking pitiful. From now on it will definitely be own root roses for me. Would be glad to give them away but they are not worth the drive for anyone. They are just sick. Have three Knockout's that didn't do all that well this summer either. I hope someone helps you find the roses you need, Barb.
Christi
I have Red Cascade. It blooms all summer.
http://www.antiqueroseemporium.com/rose-927.html
Ooh, I have to have a red cascade. I have some sort of rose I got from walmart that is mixed colors and blooms all year on an off but its a bush type. Would love to have a climber like that. I had one when I was a kid that was the same color and as tall as our two story garage. I went looking for a cutting of it when I went back to my hometown last month and the whole garage and all plants were gone. I could have cried.
Hey, Christi, I've been sending you gifts on Facebook. :)
I don't know. I haven't done much gardening this year. My sleeping problems have been really bad this summer, so I haven't had the energy. Plus, all the stuff in my yard is gigantic and way overgrown this year, and there's a mountain of work, and it's toooooo hot to do it. I'd better pick up the pace pretty soon.
Barb, have you picked a day yet for the great Fate cleanup?
you know what i think i need more..........a plan. i think i would rather all you experts come here to help me come up with a plan. i need rose people and dl people and iris people and shrub people and vine people to all come together and help me organize this thing. what do you think? no work...........except for coming up with a drawing of what is to come. keep thinking about opening a new thread asking for folks to come and give advice.
Now there you've got it! Probably no two would agree and we could really have a great plan by the end of the day.
i want to tell you what i am looking for and then i would love to hear how you each would do it. i have so many ideas but the mechanics and the enormity of the job has me stalled.
Why don't you put up a picture, then tell us what your "dream" is. Maybe we can help make it happen!
annette i am going to start a thread when i get the nerve. it's so personal to me. and it may all be for naught but i have to try and make this place desirable for people to want to come and take pictures as an aid to help my kids go to school. their death benefits from their dad stop when they reach 18. i have to find a way to make some money for them and all i have is this little plot of ground.
Barb, talk to the school counselor starting now. The are grants all over the place if you know which ones to ask for. The sooner you start the quicker they will be able to help you find grant money.
i will do that lucy but e.v. just started 9th grade and i don't think i need apply to anything until her junior year. jack on the other hand will surprise me to no end if he even goes to college.
Allright, now that I've had some time to think this over, I want to know what you have in mind to make money. Do you want to grow and sell plants? Or have a bed and breakfast? Or just a great place for brides to b photographed? Maybe grow fresh herbs and sell them to restaurants?
a place for photos for brides and kids and dogs.
O.K., then you are talking about beautiful arbors, concrete benches, maybe some split rail fences with roses growing on it. I have a clear picture! Maybe a table set for a tea party!
cattle fencing make great inexpensive arbors.
Sounds beautiful already. I'll try to get the website that my friend uses for her photography and see if you get any ideas from it. They do a lot in the spring with azaleas and dripping spanish moss but she probably has other thing that would do better in your area.
We happened to be at Mercer Arboretum while a photographer was taking wedding pictures for this bride. We kept running into them in different areas, and finally, I just had to take a few shots, myself. Maybe this is what mamajack has in mind? The wedding was still a couple of months away! This was Jan.18th.
yes, yes, yes. but at the same time must be indestructible to boys and dogs and there has to be a memorial to their dad and a war zone that is teenagerish. plus converting the garage to a place for the kids to play their guitars and skate board. i have a huge long horn skull that i want out there in a native garden of sorts.
some kind of water thing. got these 2 old cattle troughs that i want to use in front of the houses to make it look like the old cow town saloons with the watering trough and the hitching rail kind of a thing? plus this place in the 50's and for a good number of years had these shack type structures for truckers that were passing through. so there's that aspect.
the war zone has 2 small kid type houses. we want a wall of roses. that's where their dad's yellow rose has to be. but they said they wanted the rest of the roses to be black. guess we're gonna have some kinda johnny cash kind of a thing here. plus i want a millet garden. this area is in the part of the yard that i named The garden that Texas can't kill.
and there is so much more. so see why i am stuck.
Well, now we have a better mental picture. How much area do we have to work with?
how big? this is a guess........my place is pie shape. one end........the point..........is the name that the kids whose mom and dad built this house called it. there was a gas station/strore and the shacks for truckers.
so guessing it's 70 on the flat end. the sides are .............100 yards. maybe 60 by 80. it's 2 lots with a total of 3 lots making the pie. the part i don't own is owned by a turd head. it is a tiny piece of property and so tiny he can do nothing with it. he told me i could buy it for 1700.00 on the phone. when i got down to his place he said he had said 17,000! but that's another story. i use the property as i have cut the grass for about 15 years. i figure the wall of roses is going in there.
Let me get this straight now. You want to have an outdoor photography studio with an old west theme. You want a "play area" for the kids and dogs. And a memorial area. You want to block off the view of the old goat's property.
Do you have any pictures that shows what already exists?
Are the trucker shacks still there, or do they need to be demolished? Are they old wood that might be salvaged for use?
the real trucker shacks are gone. but i have these 2 kids houses. and thought about putting them with a lean to. it's hard for me to describe what i'm seeing. i know i have more ideas than i really have room for. maybe i want a bunch of "little rooms" or maybe just a few. i like hearing other people's ideas as sometimes it helps me figure out what it is i really do want.
mostly i think i need someoone to bring all of what i am wanting into reality. then i can just get it done. without a plan i am floundering and doing nothing.
part of it i want as sort of a secret garden for my daughter. a princess part. . she is 16 next year.
A Princess part......
That brings a whole 'nother perspective to things. I can picture a merry-go-round horse with cloth flowing in the wind (attached to the top of the pole) surrounded by beautiful topiaries, and a couple of Knights standing guard.
what a vision. the main thing i have to do is use scraps to make everything. i am collecting different odds and ends now to use in whatever way we come up with.. i have 2 small houses that need to be moved in . i have 2 cattle watering troughs that are pretty big. an ol wringer washing maching. some stones and some bricks. some old used wood.
a whole bunch of tin sheets.
some things i will need to buy or make. are you a good craftsman? my sister is.
Barb, I am good with the carpentry part, and will be glad to help with that. Jack can probably use a small saber saw safely. Ev, can drive nails or just carry boards.
Do you have a budget amount planned for this project?
I may be able to scavenger a few things for you, such as the old barn wood and maybe an old seeder. If I could bring myself to part with a few more of my old things, I'll donate them also. I recently bought a load of scrap cedar from a saw mill. There might be something we could do with some of that, like hitching posts or something.
I once saw a merry go round horse made from using an old child's spring horse. The horse was separated from the frame. It was painted with the new paints that you can get at Wal-mart that paint on plastic. A hole was made in the center and a galvanized fence post was concreted in the ground and the horse was slipped over the pole and fastened on. It was very neat when it was finished. It was also pretty inexpensive to do. Everything was pretty much just scraps that were put together and prettied up. Of course, it was just for looks, you couldn't actually sit on it. I suppose, it could be braced well enough to sit on if desired. I already have some flowing cloth that we can use for it, we just need a breeze to make it flow.
So, keep an eye out for those materials if you are interested in doing that project.
When we come up are we just going to being the design part or do you plan on us getting started?
I can dedicate a couple of days if I have some advance time to plan for it.
Charlene
well at first it was to come and do. but i don't want to do until i have a clearer idea. plus i have a lot of plants that either need to go or get moved to a better home.
what i need is to say what i want to say and then someone help me by telling me what to do first. i am so bogged down in the enormity of the thing that i can't start.
in the war zone i want native grasses that i will never cut. for the time being the city of fate is ok with me. i got rid of an old truck that i had sitting out in my yard and that made them happy. they tell me other than that they considered my place under agriculture. and it was like me and the ol code guy just kinda winked at one another that he was going to continue to allow me to pursue my happiness the way i wanted to pursue it. they recognize me as an eccentric or some such and to their credit have decided to leave me alone. anyway back to the grass which i don't have to cut ..............i want some very tall grass and some millet and roses and cactus. i do want native grasses. i also have a metal cactus. jack said he wanted a garden of metal plants. and the family has called him cactus jack all his life. there are rats and possums and mice and rabbits and birds out there. that's all that's left now that the development came. and i told my kids i intended on keeping them all. unless ben and the boys decide to move in i love having the rats around. there were snakes this spring and i loved that. anyway the war zone is to have the kind of plants that boys can trample on or cut or shoot at or whatever they want to do with them and it doesn't matter.
charlene i heard every word you said. do you know where i could get some used lumber, cedar posts or telephone poles? also got some old tree stumps that i want to cut into 6-8 inch thick pieces to use for steps here and there.
my sister has these 4 metal columns that she wants to put in e.v.s garden. somebody said they had a hot tub to give us but i don't think that's a good thing to have out there. what do yall think?
also there is this little stream my sister and i built. i have dug this whole place and now must have some help.
it has to smell heavenly too by the way. and must be full of color. i have dl's, iris, amaryllis, lilies, baptisia, and a whole bunch of other stuff that has either got to be removed completely or put somewhere else.
i have a couple large roses that need to be moved i think.
endless.
I follow your picture, Barb. It is going to be beautiful. Mike and I will be there with our work clothes and shovels whenever you are ready. Every big project starts with one foot in front of the other. Maybe consider taking it by sections and clearing out just one part at a time. Each area probably has some things you want left where they are. Keep the big picture in your mind but don't try to actually "do" it all at once. Fall is a good time to start laying things out. When it cools down, garage sales gear up and you might find some of the things you want. At least something that would work like you want it. Be flexible so when you see something, imagine it with a different use. This time of year the big box stores start clearance of things like the patio canopys. Something like that might work for e.v.'s throne area. Would help to define it too.
I agree, one step at a time. If you look at the "Big picture" you would be, no doubt, overwhelmed. Try to break it down in steps. I have to do that, especially since back surgery. What I did was take a clipboard, stocked with plenty of paper, and a good, sharp pencil, outside, broke the projects into "areas". Drew a crude picture of the area, and wrote down the thing i wanted/needed to do in each area. Of course the first step in each was the "clean up" part, i.e. remove excess salvia, dig and pot plants to be moved, plant what needed to be planted, etc. I sat in each area to do that. You get the picture, and can easily do one step at a time in each area.
No, I am not really good at construction. I'm better at figuring things out. I stand 5'1", and weigh about 110 lbs, and old as dirt. I can paint walls, not that pretty artistic stuff.
Maybe the tin sheets could be painted as a backdrop, with a desert scene. Or, maybe "Boot Hill". Or, Cinderella's castle!
Barb, you know, it might be that you could first use some help digging and getting rid of the plants you don't want. Clearing out some of it might give you a clearer picture of where things should go.
I have a little mini-pond liner that I'll donate if you can use it. It's a rigid liner that holds about 75 gallons. It's small, but big enough for a couple of water lilies and some other things. I can also divide my water lilies if you can use them.
well the thing is i have the use of a tractor and i plan on hiring a couple guys to do the dirt work and some moving of houses and reconstructing of houses. but then it's a blank slate. i don't want to wait any longer. e.v. is 16 next year. i want a party for her out there. i am trying unsuccessfully to save some money for the dirt work now. but i'll get it. the iris need to come up so that the patch can be plowed. then i need to mulch it heavily to keep the grass out.
back to the tractor......would like to get it co-ordinated enough that i have the hired help with the dgers so we could work smarter but you need a plan. did yall want to bring some tents?
