Present! but not accountable.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Here but still having coffee, and not awake enough to be silly yet! Good job on the new thread Barb. It will pull up a lot quicker for those that have dial up.
Admin doesn't like the long threads because it pulls down response time for everyone. (I think that is the reason)

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Instead of doing anything constructive, I am sitting on the patio watching the Bumblebees feed from the Indigo Spire. Maybe I'll do something constructive later ... or not.

Carla

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I would follow you anywhere, darlin'.

Christi

Well, almost anywhere.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Gave my roses a severe cutback about a month ago, fertilized and gave them a big dose of Epsom Salt. They are full and blooming their little heads off this morning.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

my kids want a wall of climbing roses. all black except for one lone yellow in the middle. their dad was a yellow rose kind of texan. which are the "blackest" roses? how many rose plants do i need to have say a 20 ft. wall?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Way over my head. Might go to the Rose thread and ask. That's where most of the experts hang out.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Roses remind me of my ex-husband....the thorn in my side kind of guy!! They are nice to look at when they belong to other people. I just don't want them around! LOL!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

but see sheila north texas water cut the danged trees. now i have a clear view to the .......ahem......development. i need a wall to block that in the first place. roses would be cool. the only thing i am not hip on is the "black" ones. the kids just want the yellow ones to stand out. yall have any other ideas?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Plant all yellow.

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

I don't have real good luck with roses, except for the antique ones. I have a Mermaid that is overwhelming. It has big, simple flowers.I have some pictures, but they are on my other hard drive. I;ll try to send some later.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Ladybanks grow fast and will block out the view in no time.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

is mermaid the one that gets bigger than texas?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Barbara, roses like a lot of water.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Everything is bigger in Texas!

Carla

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

but established roses don't need any extra water to live. at least mine don't. i got mine from seedpicker plus another lady that had a lot of old homestead types and they do fine without water. one day i may give things an extra drink but not yet. and they might bloom better in the fall without water. you think?

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Iceberg and Don Juan are good. I don't water mine very often and they've done quite well all summer.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

You guys have been having way too much fun without me.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

paaaaaaaaat-teeeeeeeeee! i am so glad you came. wanted to talk to you for ages. now if only cocoa and dawn would wander in. it'd be like old times.

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

My Mermaid is huge. We put it on an arbor, and it covered it in the first year. The second year it was amazing. Not a twig was bare of flowers. I'm still going to try and find that picture for you. It blooms like that every year. I have Lady Banks, it;s beautiful when it blooms in spring but if you want more bang for your bucks, I' d go with something else. Mermaid blooms off and on all summer and into the fall for me. Heaviest bloom is in spring.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

that description from the antique rose emporium makes it sound like kudzu. will it ever stop growing? however on and off summer bloom sounds wonderful. is it fragrant?

yall i turned daves garden sideways today. i was trying to make some musical notes and i just punched some buttons that i guess were just close to the ones you are supposed to push and the next thing i know i am sideways. my sister fixed it.

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes, it's really nice to walk out in the yard and pick up the fragrance. The picture at the antique rose emp. doesn't show its real beauty.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

No one but mamajack could turn Dave's sideways. hahaha

Patty, where have you been?

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

O.K., mama, here's a picture. It is the white rose in the background, behind the red cascade. I have thousands of pictures to go through, so this isn't the best one, but all I can come up with in a short period of time.

what do you mean it's the white rose? i thought mermaid was yellow? that red is real pretty.

(Elizabeth) DFW Area, TX

The roses are beautiful, but mercy, what is the blue coming from in that picture?

I was not funny, laughing or giggling tonight, so I wasn't going to inflict my formerly grumpy self onto this thread ;) but that picture stopped me in my tracks. :)

And I realized that this would be a good place to ask about a rose I'd like to find. My great-grandmother planted it next to the porch in the house I was later to grow up in, so it's an old variety that I'm looking for. It was huge, but the pink flowers were miniature and the fragrance was lovely. The flowers had that perfect "rose" shape if that makes any sense to you. The flowers were not the single wild rose type - they looked like tea roses, individually - double or triple or whatever they're called. The flowers came out in big clusters and they'd bloom a beautiful baby pink and fade to a much lighter pink.

Any roses like that, that any of you know of?

Here's a silly picture I like - apropos of... er... nothing! ;)

Mama, the rose is yellow, but not lemon yellow, In the picture they look white.

Quilter, that is larkspur. I let it reseed every year. It's the first blooming thing in the spring. The rose you are talking about sounds like Cecil Brunner. ARE has it. Most good nurseries will have it. Not boxstore.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

annette that mermaid doesn't look so big. how long have you had that one? i have veilchenblau. wow...... that sucker grows fast.

quilter i ain't happy and giggling today either. in one week's time we are going to have a temp break. must have one. then i'll be happy. i loved the cat picture.

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

Mama, it's not blooming right now, but I will take a picture tomorrow. I have a coral vine growing on the other side of the arbor, and it has kind of taken over. The other picture was taken in May of 2004. It was planted in 2002. I have that picture, and it is only about 4' tall. Don't worry, it will easily cover 40'+ of fence in no time. This one is May 2003. The one I was looking for in the first place!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

annette, that's the thing........once it covers 40 ft. of fence then what? lol

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

How much do you want it to cover?????

(Elizabeth) DFW Area, TX

Annette, thank you so much! I looked up Cecil Brunner and I think that might be the very one. In my (admittedly foggy!) memory, the roses look more like tea roses - maybe I'm only remembering the bud stage.

Your picture reminded me why I want to plant larkspur. My goodness, that is a stunning color! I had decided that I couldn't plant larkspur because of the toxicity, but maybe I could poke out a spot in the bare front yard to put them. (sheesh.... I can't even manage the beds I have and here I am thinking about starting new ones... )

mamajack, I'm happy to see the temperatures drop a bit, too. Last week, there were two mornings that brought a hint of cool and today, there was a breeze while I was out watching everything wake up, so there's hope! I think it's usually warmer out your way than it is here, isn't it? We may be moving to Greenville in the next year, so I hope I'm wrong on that count! ;)

I love those silly pet pictures. A good friend of mine (85 years old!) sends me scads of cute pictures and jokes by email. Not as many this time of year because like us, she's out working in her yard. She has an average new subdivision type of backyard - small - but when you step into the gate, you think you're in a botanical garden. She has people to help her with the heavy stuff and anything that needs a ladder like pruning the trees, but she tends to all the rest of it by herself.

Have a great day!

well no it's prob. a degree cooler than dallas if anything. but generally we are neck in neck. i think you will get more rain in greenville though. and at least there is still come country over there.

my daughter's birthday is sept. 14 and for every year since she has been born just a few days before her birthday the temps cool for good. this is the 15th year so am watching to see if it happens again. my daughter is 15 this year. goes so quick.

and annette 40 ft. is good but does it stop at that? lol. i want some roses but not just one and i am afraid mermaid will outgrow the space i need it for.

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

Mama, I've always found that a good, sharp pair of pruners takes care of any overgrowth.

Quilter, my Mom always had a Cecil Brunner in the yard, so that's how I remembered that. It was her favorite rose.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i like c.bruner too as well as abraham darby.

anybody ever grow gold badge?

(Elizabeth) DFW Area, TX

Well, mamajack, I hope your daughter's birthday brings cool with it again this year. Fifteen - oh what an age - but if you can just get through this year without either of you going to the funny farm or to jail, you're doing great! ;)

My youngest just turned 18 a few weeks ago. Like most of her older siblings, she quit speaking to her father and I (except for single syllables accompanied with eye-rolling and other usual signals of intense disdain) at some point and then decided we were okay again a year or two later. ;)

Annette, did your mother keep her Cecil Brunner in the shade or in the sun? I'm curious because the one where I grew up was on the north side of the house and I doubt that it ever got even a little bit of sun. But I wonder how in the world it managed to bloom so beautifully without sun? Maybe the house wasn't facing true north, but at least a teeny bit east or west.

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

It was mostly in the sun. Dad always kept it pruned into a roundish shape. He always had beautiful roses. He was a fisherman, so fish bones were used to feed them. If I did that here, all I would have is a fire ant hatchery! That was waaaaay back in California - rarely had black spot probably because of the low humidity.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

show me a picture of what you mean by roundish shape? and what's the difference between repeat bloomers and continuous bloomers?
