Problems in seed trading

Albany, ME(Zone 4b)

I went to the place where you can list seeds you want and seeds you have for trading. (Got there by clicking on one of the items to the right on the home page. I have several problems/questions.

1 - I entered dianthus (genus) inchmery (species) and dianthus desmond in my want list. Both of them show up "Did you mean cleanthus
ailanthus.
If I entery only "dianthus" in the genus field it comes up with "Velvet Pink dianthus" which I don't want. How can I add the two that I want to my list?

2 - (Less important) There is a search field in the box labeled "TradeList Menu" on the right on the home page. I don't know how to trigger the search. If I just enter "dianthus" and then I get "Error 404: File not found."

3 - Even less important - I get an error if I click the button in that same box.

Inchmery and Desmond are cultivars not species--try leaving the species field blank and put them in the cultivar field instead.

As far as the search box problem--that is for searching your own trade list, and if you don't currently have a Dianthus in your trade list then you will get an error. Try it again once you've got your Dianthus in your list and it ought to work better (I don't have a trade list so I can't verify that it'll work then but I suspect it will). I don't have a button in my trade list box on the home page so I can't help you on question #3.

Dianthus is the genus; 'Inchmery' and 'Desmond' are cultivars. You can enter them without any quote marks around them in the appropriate field, and the system should accept them.

You're right, the search is not working properly. Dave, here's what you get when you put a key word in that box:

Do you mean if you click on the "Help" button? That's true, it also comes up to a 404 error: http://davesgarden.com/tools/tradelist/tlhelp.php

The "Main Page" link worked fine for me.

I did enter diantush as the genus and inhmery and desomnd as the cultivars without quotes and it came up with the "did you mean clianthus ... did you mean aialnthus". I did not use quotes. Look at the LAS14 "want" liist (if you can) to see what I mean.

How do you get the quoted stuff to show up in a blue box???

I think you entered inchmery and desmond in the species field. Try editing them to move those to the cultivar field, and I think you'll have better luck getting them to match up to PlantFiles ('Desmond' is listed as a Dianthus x allwoodii: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/55778/ )

The other thing you can do if you're having trouble figuring out what to put in which field is look up your plants in Plant Files, and down toward the bottom of the entry for each plant you'll see links for adding them to your have or want lists. Maybe that would be easier for you since it'll take care of putting everything in correctly. Here are your two Dianthus--scroll down to the bottom and see if you see the links I'm talking about.

Thanks to both of you. Yes, the link at the bottom of plant files works nicely. And I've now learned a lot about searching.
