Exclude Usernames in Search?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Hey, Dave!

I was just searching for nandina on DG because Go_Vols has some for trade and I wanted to learn more about them (other than the fact that Trish hates 'em, LOL).

I found lots of threads member "Nandina" had posted to, but few about the plant itself. When I tried nandina domesticus, I got the same thing, plus threads which contain domesticus, but not nandina domesticus.

Hmmmmm....I know a lot of folks use botanical names for themselves, and I'm wondering if there's a way around this. Any suggestions?

well, if we're going to ask, let's ask big. How about a search using 'whatever' as a member name and not a plant?

Kim - lets talk!! Mail me if I forget to mail you re Nandina!!

Kim, your question got me thinking. And tiG, yours did too. Because sometimes I do search for a member and a key word or phrase (because I remember somebody - sometimes I - said something and I want to find the thread again...)

When I put "Nandina domestica" in quotes it eliminated all the threads that Nandina had posted to (which is good). But because the two words are not together in the databases, it excluded the entry from the plants database, the journals and the tradelists (which is not good.)

Ditto for Nandina+domestica

When I put in Nandina + domestica I'm back to square one - the tradelists, journals and plants database entries show up, but so do all the forum threads that Nandina posted to.

Dave, any tips for us?

Shouldn't we just go to the Data Base first to look up plants?

Eyes, yes the database should be the first place we turn to. But....sometimes there are interesting threads outside of the database about a particular plant, and it's helpful to read those, too. I think that's what Kim was trying to do.

I personally find the search feature VERY helpful when I'm trying to figure out who is growing a particular plant (and has logged it in their journal, which they have made public), and who has seeds/plants for trade and/or who is wanting a particular plant.
