One of the great things when I got back was how many of my seedlings survived! I have about 20 or more lobelia cardinalis and a whole bunch of Lobelia x gerardii 'Vedrariensis' plus lots of different baby echinacea! Two of the rugosa roses survived. And a bunch of other stuff as well.
My Lobelia siphilitica are blooming for the first time - wow! these are great, so I am going to let some go to seed and wintersow more.
Seandor, you don't have to bother wintersowing the lobelia siphilitica. It self- seeds and multiplies abundantly. Or just scatter the seed where you want it.
Really? Excellent - I think it is very lovely. ^_^
I think it's lovely too - and any unnecessary work is worth abstaining from, I think. You might, however find seedlings here and there around your yard.
Oh ya all I so excited. Hopefulyl cna down load some pics later this evening. Had to out to the back 40 as I call it , that and the jungle and foudn some new plant growing around. It soemthign ne w the bird s have dropped or the rain in my yard. Nevr seen anythign like it before and while it a bit differnt it sure is pretty adn the honey bees and butterflies was all over the plants.
When I get it uploade d hope one of ya can tell em what it is. Watch me my luck it be a weed, btu if it is it sur e it pretty one. : ) If it not then wil need somebody to tel me wher e I gonan fidn seeds on it.
I hate te way area looks cuz grass, weeds and wild blackberrie s all knee high, but also get a bunch of new stuff from the birds, so I hate to cut it, afraid I miss some new treat they bringing me or owing down food for the wildlifes needs.
Ella, you're teasing us! All that excitement without a picture! Remember, a weed is just a plant growing where you don't want it, so its a Wildflower :-)
Hi star,
That looks like it might be Monarda punctata. What a fun & pretty find! Check this link: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/799/
I haven't posted in a long time but I've been on lurker mode. I've skimmed through and noticed many birthdays so Belated Happy Birthday to all that I missed! :)
Hi Danita!!!!!!!! Glad ya poppe d in.
Yep you right, that what I got. Surpris e surprise.!!!!!!! Thank you! Thank you!!!!!!! : )
Nice to knwo it not just a pretty weed.
Now anybody have any ide a when I colelct seed s from it? Wil colelct soem and hoepfulyl it wil reseed and make some mroe for a bigger field for the wildlife.
Oh I happy now. Now that I knwo what it is maybe I cna try and trim it to make it bush more like somebodys is in oen of the Dg pics from off the link ya sent.
Hi! i beez lurking too! But iffin all yah lil ol piggies swap agin...i woulld likes ta beez in, please!
We definately gonan be swapping. : ) I gettign excite d thinkign about it. Got me 2,000 little seed baggies, so I be ready for sure. : )
Star - oh that's wonderful, the Monarda punctata. We used to see it growing in the middle of a steep dirt road to a stone ruin that still overlooks the railroad tracks a few miles from our house. The ruin is near a cliff face above the tracks that looks like a giant boulder, and in early summer, volunteer Widow's Tears bloom in every nook and cranny throughout the vertical part of that boulder. There used to be a crab apple tree at the entrance to this track on the other side. And the hill the ruin is perched on extends in a high ridge to the river on the other side from the railroad tracks, and just before that ridge goes down to the river, there used to be a grove of Chinquapin trees.
Lemmesee, what else...before you get to the track, there's a bog and before that a small pond beneath the railroad tracks. There used to be a wild rose with single pink blossoms on the edge of the pond where turtles basked, and a little further along a bog, where peppermint grew and just across the bog there were muscadine grapes.
I really loved the way some of the old plants survived long after this house was abandoned and the park system took over. To walk through the remains of gardens and orchards that go back who-knows-how-many decades (at least 50s or 60s), and that show a certain self-sufficiency by the usefulness of the plants, is inspiring. Makes ya weep when ya think what Home Owner Associations are obstructing with their garden/landscaping rules and regulations.
I can't tell you how much I love that wild place in the sun you have going where you are. Don't ever apologize to me about how untidy it may be - that's just the sort of thing I crave.
I think DH and I are going back soon to check for seeds. It would be nice to feature medicinal herbs in our coming swap - I know we'll wind up swapping everything and the kitchen sink, but I'd love to keep medicinal herbs in mind.
Just beautiful, Star
sorry crossed posts - Regarding Monarda punctata, I'd wait until the seed heads are brown and crispy, but not too long - it's tricky to pounce in just the right window of time. I put branches of ripened seed heads upside down in paper bags, where the seeds often just fall out and are caught by the bag.
I don't know for sure, but I wonder if seeds of M. punctata are like M. didyma (our more familiar beebalm) - those seeds are said to be right in the top of the cone, at the base of the florets, if I'm remembering correctly.
Forgot to welcome some newcomers to us piggies - jsxtiger, I expect you to give us piggies new meaning to the term, "belly laugh".
Danita, I don't recall if you & I both participated with the piggies in the past or not, but being the flying kind of piggies, we have many facets, so we enjoy sprinkling belly laughs with the learning process, too.
Awesome find Ella!
If any of you are needing zip lock plastic seed baggies, I've lucked into loads of them. A business in Lexington that sold beads went out of business a couple of years ago, and some friends of mine bought the leftover stock. Among the stuff was a bunch of bags, each with 100 plastic envelopes that they packaged bead purchases in, and those have been given to me. There is a box full, gotta be thousands of them- even doing seed swaps it will take me years to use them all. I've got lots of 2"X2" and 2"X3" sizes.
Ella, do you think you're going to be up to being hostess again this year? You did a fabulous job, so that would be wonderful, but if you're not, let us know. I'd be willing if no one else is up to the task, but probably something we should be considering soon.
Karen, I've been sending folks over here who have approached me about seed trades and have shown interest in seed swaps. I think this is the BESTEST of seed swaps, where I've met some of the BESTEST of folks on DG :-)
That's a great offer, Neal. Quite a job.
I want to declare my intent to be a piggy again this year, before you fill up the spots unofficially. This year I'm far more prepared, collecting lots more seeds and varieties, and have been packing them up as they dry. Can't wait - already practicing my oinks!
It was such fun, and such a great way to stay focused on spring during the drab winter months. I'm already excited about the next one too! Now when I'm collecting seeds, its always with the thoughts of getting plenty to share with my fellow piggies. Snagged seeds yesterday from my landlord's house, some pretty gold and orange dwarf marigolds, magenta and lavender Petunias, orange Cosmos, and some Rudbeckias I need to look up. The Ruds look like regular Black Eyed Susans, only with smaller blooms (about 2"), and loads of them on well branched stems.
Found it! Rudbeckia triloba- I knew those 3 lobed leaves should make it easy to figure out!
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/121175/
I bought rudbeckia "maya" this year at Bluestone's half price sale and love it. One of the plants is something else - like one of the autumn colors varieties and gorgeous. This year my want list is going to include some of the short rudbeckia varieties like "toto rustic" and the autumn colors doubles or zinnia-type flowered ones - so please save seeds, people!
Does anyone know if these are true perennials, or if they're annuals that re-seed? I've seen them called both.
I don't mind hosting it again. Would ya believe still got all them 2 gallon piggy swap buckets stil sitting in the living room next to the chair. LOL Always seeme d to busy to take them out so they all stil brand new and fresh.
Hi-Ho-Hi-ho it's piggie s off to sow. hahahahaha.
Is it ok with everybody if we kind a try and get in like last year though. Make s it alot easier, to have thos e with early cold and snow start getting stuff in and then the last of folks to finish up. It alot easier to seperate the thousand sof seeds that way. Think by the time everybody got done and everythign got shippe d we was runnign pretty close to Valentine's day.
If nobody has an objection to me doing it again, then am gonna start a thread in the seed forum for folks to start gettign names in and
folsk that wil be on the SUrvior. ( hopefulyl got the right term this time) list to start puttign ther e names on too. Knwo we had a bunch of areas that floode d out and this will giv e them something to look forward too too over the winter.
I alot more organize d this year, so this oen shoudl be bigger and better than last year , crosse s fingers, says a few prayers. LOL Wil probably stil need folks to help with startign ne w threads and stuff, and especialyl at the begining, somebody make sure that we have the piggy swap seed chat thread and the trade s all on seprate one again. I goofed ther e at the beginign last year and sure was thankful for the extra hands helping get us straightened out. : )
On that Monarda. Anybody have any idea abotu when I shoudl start looking for seed on it? That a jungle back there and also dreaded snake territiory so don't want to walk through there too much , but wanan gather seed of it for everybody.
BlueSpriral.. Neat story. : ) Enjoyed hearing it.
Perennial that me too, starting to get things ready and ahead of time. Cours e once the mad oinking starts that may all go out the window heheheheh.
Unless somebody has major onjection to me hostessing again then in a coupel days will put the first thread up for folks to start joining, so they can be gatherign their seeds whiel they thinkign abotu it and got achance or buying or sneakign or whatever, folsk do . Me I cna beg real pretty when the need arises. heheheheheh
I'm saving seeds and practicing my oinking!!! Please count me in again!
Gemini, I would love to buy some of your baggies. Let me know.
This is off subject, but would anyone like cuttings from me?
Practice up real good Lynn!
Guess what I just harvested. Well, I'll tell you. Some tricyrtis puberula seeds, and they're nice and fat and black, unlike the scrawny ghostly other tricyrtis seeds I harvested last year. I never even heard of tricyrtis puberula til a month or so ago, when I found one. You'll have to be a real good oinker if you want some of these little treasures! And they're not even likely to have crossed, because they bloomed after the early latifolias, and before the late ones.
PS Ella, you're the seed queen. I'm sure no one will have any objections whatsoever.
I practicing my oinking very easily and not too much right now. Got sinuse s drainign big time and not a very nice soudn or feeling tryign to snort right now. LOL
Sorry to hear that Ella, but I'll bet you can snort real good in your condition. Hope you feel better soon.
pereniallyme, you good girl look guys she added them to the plantfiles:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/182908/
I had never seen them either but that's not saying much around here where we have NOTHING lol Those are pretty and I like them because they are only 12-24" high that's a lot nicer than the ones I have they are so tall they flop all over my other plants.
pereniallyme, Rustic Colors are a perennial I had the same one come back this year and it was true, had one to reseed and the flowers were even bigger than the original plant so I'm collecting seeds off of it too :) Here is a picture I don't have a camera but...:
http://www.robsplants.com/plants/RudbeHirta.php
Mine look like the flower next to the goldylocks, I have that one too if someone wants me to collect the seeds it's the same height about two feet maybe a little more not much. I just figure everyone has that one I've had it for a few years now.
Really doesn't look like I'll be asking for seeds this year now I just found out my court date and it won't be until the last of Feb.! I just don't believe how far away that is that means I can't get rid of any furniture around here and I am about sick of wall to wall furniture! What is the point to try and fix this house up when it looks like Sanford & Son with all this wall to wall furniture I am so mad! I want it over with!!! My life has been in limbo for almost nine years and it still will be until Feb. :( It's not fair! All of this because I didn't want to see my dad pass a month after my mom...you know how old people do after they have been married for so long. I was wanting to get a room mate to help me out with bills and I couldn't ask someone to move in and not know if they would still have a place after Feb. it wouldn't be fair to them. I'm STILL in limbo! Sorry I'm done but if you can't whine to your friends who can you whine to I'm just so darn upset! I know you don't know what to say but it just feels good to get it out :) Thanks for listening :)
On a good note, Star good for you I would be happy for you to do the swap ;-) Get ready girl lol Same time of the year is good for me too that way maybe these few seeds that I have collected will be cleaned by then LOL I can't even get in my middle bed this year to collect some seeds that I was wanting to have for the swap I really hate that, snakes? I'm more afraid of the ticks just can't make myself get in there lol I tried this morning and just couldn't do it LOL As I have said before I think I have weeds taller than me in there I have NEVER had a bed in such a mess I really wanted to get in there and transplant a bunch of them in the side yard bed but don't think that's gonna happen, just hope for the best next year I guess...Star do you have any knee boots lol I don't have any or I could use'em lol
Star I don't know a lot about Monarda but I do know that the seed head needs to turn brown before the seeds come out you can just shake them in a sack or bowl they are kind of small sort of like Victoria Blue Salvia maybe a smigen smaller. You need to get them out quick I tried to save some last year and missed them you tip them over and they pour out like a cup of coffee lol I missed them all so be careful :) Even if the wind blows they come out too easy.
Neal, I wouldn't mind having some of the 2X2 baggies I would trade you something for them or pay you those are perrrfect for the smaller seeds like rudbeckia or salvia I've tried to find those at wal mart but haven't seen them.
I forgot someone was wanting some pink turtle head seeds too and so I've been watching mine out front those little flowers do look like a turtle head lol Sweet!
Lea, I'm so sorry that mess is dragging on so long. Just try not to let yourself get too upset, focus on the things you want. When you start feeling anxious, ask yourself 2 questions- Am I safe at this moment? Do I have all I really need at this moment? The answers are almost always "yes", and then I can calm down enough to take a deep breath, and bring to mind something that brings me joy. Hang in there, girl, you're gonna be just fine :-)
Lynn, you and Lea, and anyone else who needs some is welcome to some of the little baggies- I'll give 'em to ya! Heck, I'll probably be seeing several of them back, LOL!
perenniallyme, most of the Rudbeckias, particularly R.hirta cultivars, are short lived perennials. I had the best luck I've ever had with Ruds this year, all wintersown and blooming their hearts out!
Ella, I don't think you'll hear any objections to hosting again- you did an awesome job! I'm just glad the last one didn't make you run away pulling your hair out, LOL.
Awwwwwwwwww LeBug.. Ya got apic of them turtle heads.
Well, I tell ya what, yep this the plac eto let off steam, and ya shoudl jump in the piggy swap too, cuz at soem point eventualyl here alogn the way, this are gona settle down and then you will be having seeds to plant.
Hoepfulyl things will get settle d quickly and ya knwo then you wil be wishing ya ha d oinke d yoru head off silly.
Take comofrt in the fact that you did right. Good brings good and eveil begets, or is it begots, bad. You got Angels upon yoru shoulders adn they will help see ya through everything. It maddenign now , but at least you cna sleep with a clear concious. Stay strong our friend, we here for ya for sure.
yippers! ehh, gemini_sage, i could use some of them bags as well, if ya please? i's got a seven week old grandson i could swap fer! he beez spoiled already and cant lay he down!!!!
LOL Star I have oinked my little snout off the last couple of years that's why I'm not oinking this year really you know I'll probably oink for a couple anyway I can never look the other way LOL I tried that last year and it didn't work then either lol My crisper is full of seeds does it sound like I need seeds, I didn't get many planted last year at all it seemed like a lot but when I put them all back in the fridge and had so many left I just couldn't believe it!
Thanks Neal I needed that I'll remember it! This time next year is what I'm worried about though having a roof over my head haven't had much luck in the job market but everything will work out it's just scary for now, God has always taken care of me when I've needed it the worse so I'll just put myself in his hands but sometimes it's easier said than done like I said I am a worrier :) And yes Star I do sleep with a clear conscious I just wonder how my sister sleeps the way she took from mom and dad all her life and now that they are gone and she is still taking! What goes around comes around I wonder if she has ever heard that before I just hope I'm around to see it...
Baggies yipeeee! Thanks Neal I'll send postage just let me know what it costs or I can when I get them :)
Almost forgot Star, look at these looks like little turtle heads with their mouths open lol I got my seeds from flowerhead410 I sure miss her she was in our first swap she isn't on here anymore :( I sure hope she is doing alright I have so many plants in my garden from her from seeds and trades, very fond memories of her :)
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/87676/
Thanks for the pat on the back, LeBug. Very nice to have one every now and then. I'll put your name on some of the puberulas. You don't even have to oink. I'd definitely love to have some seeds of the rudbeckia next to goldilocks, so I'm going to start practicing my oinking early here. It'll also help me get in shape for the upcoming marathon. And thanks for the info.
I must've missed the beginning of your story, but I think I get the jist of it. I'm really sorry you're going through this mess. Life (and the behavior of certain people) does seem really unfair and completely aggravating at times. I agree with star. You're welcome to swear, scream, holler , bellow or whatever here, as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks for your info too, Neal. This is my first experience with rudbeckias, as I'm not really too crazy about the old black-eyed susans, but these newer (?) ones are quite different.
