Yes indeedy, winter approachs; the cold (very), the snow (deep), the dark and gloom...you begin to think the sun has gone away and will never come back! I don't think you'd like it either, Gail. If I could do it, I'd winter in AZ (can you say SNOWBIRD) and summer here...in the best of all possible worlds! I've lived here 9 years now, and it always amazed me that even weeds survive the cold and snow to revive in the spring. ChuLin
Dean's AVs???
If I were a wealthy woman, I would spend the winters here and the summers in the cool of Colorado, Minnesota on the lakes or Idaho........could come up with more states , too., for the summer.
jmp24,that's a pretty violet.Is it a mini?
jannich, yes, it is a mini, and that is an AWFUL photo, as most of mine are! I need to remove some of the beat up leaves. With the minis, I hurt them checking to see if they need water, trying to fit my fingers between and under the leaves to feel the soil. Also, because of the high light I have my plants under, they are losing variegation...so a Dean's Legacy in good shape is probably much prettier than mine is. Someone just told me that this particular Dean's is named after the man who created the Deans violets, he died and they named this particular plant in his memory.
The flower color really doesn't show well in the photo, it's a medium pink with shots of darker pink running thru it in places.
One mini violet I have that I have been trying so hard to get a photo of is Persian Lace...OMG, it is STUNNING - the flowers are among the prettiest ones I have ever seen.
I know someone on the av forum that is getting ready to sell about 7 of Persian Lace........why don't you dmail Syrumani.
Gail, I have it - I have just been trying to get a decent photo of mine and I can't - the flowers are very hard to photograph. I would recommend this violet to anyone looking for something different, the flowers are almost pansy-like - pale lavender with pale stripes, with the top petals being a darker lavender with same delicate little pinstripes
Gail North Dakota would be cool, too,
JIM
ok ill get back to packing boxes
As hard as I have worked this weekend on plants, glad you are not sending a box this way for me, Jim!! smiling.........
North Dakota sounds mighty cold to me..............
Morning!
jmp24,Same things happen to me with the mini's.My fingers are too big to put under those little leaves! Are you using the small skinny bulbs in your lights? I'm finding they throw out to much light for the AV's.I'm going back to the fat bulbs on the stand with the AV's.That's a nice little story about the dean's plant ^_^
Darn Gail, you had to tell us about the Persian Lace going for sale! It sure is pretty!
I am not buying another thing this year......going to try and take care of what I have. I got carried away on ebay last night when David Thompson came back and offered me second chances!!! Very excited!!! They were all african violets!!
Oh Gail, you know you don't mean that!
Thanks for the pic Gail - I still think the flowers are much prettier in person!
Jannich, I have the big bulbs, it is just a regular 2 bulb 4ft shop light, I have one warm and one cool Ecolux bulbs. They work great, every plant I have of blooming size either has or is blooming.
