Is there a mg that is not a pest that we can grow and enjoy. I have a small morning glory that I have found out to be invasive. It comes up every year and if it gets in the way, I just pull it out. It is a pretty little thing. But I was wondering about it and figured out if anyone knew the answer, one of you all would. Thanks
Charleen
Legal Orange morning glory
Charleen are you asking if there is an orange one to grow that isnt invasive or are you asking if there are other morning glories you can grow that arent?
yes orange noah( one you are talking about) can in our states as i live one border of sc/ga. but there are some morning glories not orange that you can grow that are tame for us.
i grow several varieties and growing them in pots keeps them under control better. yes you will get seeds to sprout as volunteers but like you said pull them up but they are worth it to me to grow as the hummingbirds love them as i do.
Yes, is there one that isn't invasive? I never even thought about them being invasive. There is wild morning glory in our garden and they are beautiful, but if they are in the way of something I plant I just pul them. I don't think anything of it. I have learned a lot from these wonderful folks in the few months I have ben here. I love learning new things. Don't you? I never saw the Japanese MG til I saw these and now I learn that the doubles are like mules- sterile. No seeds that will grow into anything. We do have a good bunch of hummers this year too. Thanks
Charleen - Keep your beautiful orange MGs. I would grow them here if the hummers showed an interest. But here they would have to be grown in pots. And I would be personally interested in seeds (during the group swap). Just make sure you label the bags as to what they are now that you have an ID on them. :-)
I don't know of any large bloom MG or JMG I. nils that are orange in color off hand. A lot of other colors, but orange, bright yellow, and an almost black aren't common colors or even yet currently found in I. nil JMGs.
I think if you have such a wonderful vine in your yard that keeps the hummers happy, then I would be happy, too! :-)
Thank you, dear. I am so glad to hear that.
I don't feel so bad about the little bandit now.
the bandit as you call it comes in yellow too. i grew it this year for first time
I grew a tiny orange one this winter.. I love those little orange ones.. still waitng on all my yellows from three sources to do something..
imzadi, did you plant a sed or did it come up by itself? I may have to try planting some in pots. How large a pot do you use?
mine was from seeds but it does produce alot of seed pods
i use a gallon to 3 gallon pot. most of the time i use a gallon. morning glories do not like to be moved once up. they just dont like roots messed with. so start out in the pot you want it in.
Charleen - I currently start most of my seeds in styrofoam coffee cups. (The smallest cups.) When they get their first 2-4 true leaves on them, then I pot them up into a larger container.
This year I used the small cups, then they went into a small pot (about 4 - 6 times bigger than the cup), and then they went into 5 gallon containers. Transplanted 3 times and the vines didn't skip a beat. I think it all depends on how healthy they are to begin with and how carefully you transplant with as little root disturbance as possible. I tend to let them get a little root bound so when I remove them from the cup and then the smaller pot, the roots have a hold of everything and there is no crumbling of soil around the root ball. The roots (and vines) seem really happy when I put them in the big containers. (That's their last stop!) They have lots of leg room then! And seem to appreciate it by giving me some huge leaves! And with a shot of Bloom Booster, I usually have buds forming in a week!
Photo #1 is styrofoam cup.
#3 Next size up pot.
I'm am going to try that. Thank you. The plants look so healthy too.
I love getting all these great tips.
Do you use Bambo stakes? I think they would have t go in the ground to stabilize the plant. I have a flower bed turned weed patch I am clearing and I want to try that. Would be easier to keep watered than the ground too, huh? Beautiful plant.
My soil is HORRIBLE here in FL. So yes! containers/pots are so much better to grow my I. nils in. And yes! I use 3 Bamboo poles that I tied together at the top to form a teepee. I stick the poles right down inside the container and push them to the bottom of the pot. These containers that I am using are flat on the bottom and are cylinder shaped (not tapered at the bottom). With three poles and the vine getting larger as I wrap it around the top of the teepee, that tends to make it top heavy and more likely to tip over in strong winds. With these containers, that doesn't happen because the containers are taller and heavier with dirt. They seem to stay in place. That is a plus for me.
Go to any fastfood restaurant and ask them to put their 5 gallon pickle containers aside for you out back near the dumpster. They throw them away! Just be sure to get by there daily or every other morning to pick them up! They work great and are free!! I like the fact that they are white and reflect the heat from the roots. :-) I think I have found the perfect container to grow vines in! LOL!
Do you drill holes too? I'm sure you do. Thanks I will go check out those pickle buckets.
Oh yes! Drill 5-6 holes on the bottom! You definitely want drainage! ;-)
Charlene,
There is another Orange Morning Glory
Ipomoea obscura 'Orange Form'

I went out with my handy little camera; snapped this one this morning. The petals are curved back. It is growing on an oleaner but the black and blue salvia sets it off. I did get one of the other MG too. Took sticky notes out there and wrote the colors and tagged them. Hope tags stay on. The colors are mixwd, so going to have fun figureing what is what.
I have been using colour coded little hair clippies from the dollar store.. pink, blue, purple, white, clear, opague, orange, red, etc. they work perfectly for me .. I also use these key tag things from work, little pre cut flimzy plastic tahes that you stick the notched end thru a hole and u ca write on them... I had been dotting the stems right below the bloom stem with fingernail polish, but my daughters got mad at me using their polish..
I am still waiting for any of the three yellows I planted to appear. ( blooms) I have alot of vining going on with them, just no blooms yet. even with feeding them.. *sigh* .
Debra i never feed these types the yellow lutea orange noah or the solid orange one
my yellow or orange never got food
they in one gallon pots and in full sun and went crazy
to much food just makes my vines bushy first time this seaon i bloom boosted the other day other then that nothing
thats good to know.. they will prolly bust loose while I am gone, in september
yea know the feeling. i plan to go see hubby after daughter takes SAT test in a few weeks and seems like when i leave things bloom. think they say ok she gone we can bloom now. hehe
