I was sent this NOID brug as a bonus in a trade last fall. She said if I love tropicals that I had to have a brug. When I put it in the bed in the spring, it looked like a dead stick. Now that I see what a little sunshine and manure can do for these plants, I gotta have more! This is a pic of the largest blooms, but there are lots more coming. I just hope I get to enjoy them, before the cold weather hits!
Dee
Soon?? or The Impatience of a Newbie
Beautiful!!They will bloom soon : )
DeeS, what a stunning display. That's a very lovely garden!
Methinks we have a new brug-addict in the making! LOL!!!
Please post a pic of the bloom when it's fully opened!
Thanks, Kim and Teresa. And, I think you are right, teresa. I have been reading over a lot of the old posts and drooling at all the beautiful pictures of everyones brugs in bloom. What breath taking plants. I can't believe it has taken this long for them to grab my attention! When it first started getting buds, I kept saying to myself, I hope the flowers aren't white, but I have seen sooo many pretty white ones on this forum, that I'm beginning think that a white one will do just fine..lol..I think I want some in every color!! and, I'm thinking next year that I can add a brug bed...lol
DeeS
Your bed is absolutely gorgeous Dee.. Im jealous that your 'tropical' bed seems to be doing better in zone 6 than mine in zone 9 ROTFL
how are you planning to over winter your brug?
Hi, cue. Thanks! The secret to that bed is lots and lots of aged manure.I knew that it was gonna be the "tropical" bed and since all are heavy feeders, we tilled it in when we first put the bed in. I heard a saying once, that is so true..."Feed the soil, and it will take care of the plants". Of course miracle grow helps, too..lol
I haven't decided yet, how I am going to over winter the brug. I'm thinking I might dig the whole plant and pot it, and set it in the basement. It has no windows, so it's dark down there, and stays about 40-45 degrees all winter. But, if I run out of room, I might have to take cuttings, instead.
Dee
I'm new at this to. I believe I would go ahead and take a few cutings to be safe; however it will probably come back
next spring. This is information I have received from these wonderful Brug people. I believe I may have a bloom tonight.
I have my camera ready and I am so ready to see it; after this long wait. Mine has no name but I am very proud of her.
Good luck on your gardens. I noticed you had a castor bean plant. Please be careful with it around animals. The seeds are poison,
as are our brugs. But The castor bean is quite beautiful. Love these brugs.
ridesredmule, thanks for the info.I can hardly wait to see your first bloom.I don't even know what color I have..lol..
we do have 3 dogs..I am a sucker for a sad story..but we adore all three of them. That is why the castors, brug and four o'clocks are not in the fenced in back yard. Any time that our dogs are out of the back yard, they are on a leash, and we are with them, or they are in the van with us.
Dee
Very Good. I think Castor beans are Beautiful. I had a friend that had a little pup get hold of
one and ate them. He died. Enough of that. I have four dogs and one is a pup. My brug is starting to open, I got a picture , but got to load them.
It is suposed to be Orange, but the bloom sure doesn't look orange to me YET! We wil see . Maybe we can trade starts later on.
Wow, yours looks great...can't wait to see it when it is fully open. You must give it a thread all it's own, so everyone can see it!
I have bad news about my brug. We had bad storms last night, and it spit mine in two.The 1/2 with the biggest blooms, was laying flat this morning. I propped it back up, since it wasn't completely severed, but I doubt that it will go ahead and bloom. At least there are more blooms on other branches. I think next year, I may put mine in pots that I can wheel around, when the storms come.
I would love to trade starts, later on...just holler when you are ready.
That is so heart breaking about your friends puppy eating the castor beans.Sounds like you are even a bigger dog lover than I am, with you having 4..lol.. I think I was having empty nest syndrome, when I was aquiring mine...lol.Three grown daughters...but this time, I do have one boy..hehe
DeeS
Sometimes that is the only way to get a boy. Go get those plants and poke them in a pot of poting soil and keep it watered.
You got Starts and and they may go ahead and bloom. I have read on here that some of these folks put them in Hanging baskets, can
you imagine thesize of those baskets? I never had any children so these are my babies, along with my pets.
Even if the plant was broken it wil come back. I have a shoot coming up beside the plant in the picture .
Charleen, I wish I would have seen your post before I left this afternoon. I was away all afternoon, and when I returned this evening the broken part of the brug was limp as a rag, so I just took it the rest of the way off, and cut it up, like I was taking cuttings, and have them in water, I did leave the blooms on the top two pieces, but they are not looking good. If nothing else I should have some rooted cuttings to swap, come fall..
Dee
Dee, the first cutting I took, I stuck it in a pot of potting soil and it looked pitiful. I felt soory for it and tied it up on a stick. But i kept watering it everyday. Finaly it started looking perkier day by day. Now it is a pretty little plant. I was so impatient for it to fork or Y as they call it here I pinched out the top.
It makes them so pretty and tree-like. Just got to be patient and let it do it, itself. I'm not great on being patient either. But it sounds like you did o.k.,at least you didn't THROW them away. I have another picture for you. We can watch my baby bloming and share the joy, how about that? Now, I thought this was an orange plant, but durn, if it doesn't look yellow to me. I don't care I just want to see it bloom.
Charleen, Thanks, for sharing your blooms with me..I do still have 1/2 of mine standing, with a few blooms on it.At least I will get to see what color it is...Wonder if yours might change to orange?? What ever color it ends up, it will still be beautiful!
Dee
OH MY !! She is beautiful!!
Is your offer still good for trading cuttings this fall? You know, I would love to have one of those. I can't believe it changed that much over night.And...guess what, the cuttings that I put in water... the biggest bloom has plumped back up, so...she is going in a hanging basket..lol part of it is still wilty, but at least now, there is hope
Of coarse, Isn't she absolutely beautiful. I could not imagine such beauty in my garden.
Have three more Brug, one is white, I know for sure. One is pink and the other is supposed
to be yellow. But got them late in season and have transplanted them once. The white one always blooms
very late in the season. Going to move it closer to house and baby it more. Maybe it wil bloom earlier.
We can hope. Iam am so glad you got the starts happy and wanting to go on.
Yes, I meant what I said about the cutting, but we got to figure out how to do it. Maybe in a box.
We will figure something out. I still can't get over her beauty.
I'd be proud of her too...she is so pretty. Is she fragrant?
Have you swapped plants thru the mail before? I have been swapping(mailing) for years, but I'm not sure how to send brug cuttings... wrapped in paper towels , then a baggy?? or dry??You can get prioity boxes at the PO, or use your own. We will have to ask on the forum, I guess.
DeeS
Lady in one of the forums said I could just send a cutting , so we will try that. I will get you one. Next week, the signs
are favorable for what we want to do. So send me a d-mail and we will get to work. How about that?
WOW! It's stunning and a 6 pointer, to boot!!
DeeS
you have such a lovely garden, give it about another week, you should have a bunch of Blooms, I wish you lived near me, I have 4 Frosty Pink over 5ft tall that need a home, do you feel like a road trip, some parts of ind. are only a couple hours away from me, I have a dear friend that lives 2&1/2 hours from me, I have been over at her house & she has been
here at mine
Elizabeth
Don't send the cuttings dry or they may not survive. Wrap the bottom few inches of the cutting in 2 - 3 damp paper towels. Then wrap plastic around the papertowels only or stick the paper toweled portion in a baggie. Press the air out and tape shut. Lastly, before you put the cuttings in a box, wrap them in newspaper. The newspaper helps insulate the cuttings from extreme temperatures while in transit as well as cushions them. Sometimes they already have white nubs when they arrive.
Cuttings have a better chance of surviving and rooting if you remove all buds, flowers and large leaves.
Thank You so much bettydee, I am so glad for thatinformation. Should I start them a day or so to get the litle nums formed?
I know I will have enough to share. Did you see her blooms? I took a pic this AM. She is looking great. Can I cut them after the blossom
falls off.
Teresa -What's a six pointer? The blooms. The very first bloom is eight inches long. No wonder they call them Angels Trumpets.
bettydee, thanks, so much for the shipping instuctions, and the info on cuttings.
Elizabeth, I looked up Hamilton, on mapquest. There are two in Ohio. One close to Cincinatti(which is 151 miles), and one close to Zanesville, which is 327 miles. While I think 151, would be well worth the trip(but not 327..lol), my hubby would probably have a hissy. We are retired and do live on a pretty tight buget. Makes me wanta go whahhhh! But, thanks for the generous offer! That was so nice of you...
Dee
She's looking very healthy and her bloom are beautiful. You can take the cuttings on the day you ship them, but if you want to send cuttings with the white nubs already formed, you can make the cuttings a few days earlier.
Brug blooms normally have 5 lobes, but occasionally you'll get a bloom with 6 lobes (pointers).
bettydee, do I have to wait tfor the bloom to fall off for a cutting above the Y?
Thank you for explaining the 6 shooter. This is so much to learn. I have never been
so involved with a plant before, or are these more care intensive? Thanks for the help.
Your plant will continue to produce buds as it produces leaves and more secondary "Y"s. You can take a cutting at any time and remove the blooms and/or buds so as not to stress the cutting and to give it a better chance of rooting. I took another look at your photos. I would wait until the plant portion above the "Y" is larger and the wood more mature before taking any cuttings. If you take cuttings now the wood above the "Y" is still very tender and will be harder to root. You can still take cuttings well into fall and get them to root. By that time, the wood above the "Y" will be more mature.
Oh, thanks. I want to do it at the correct time. She is way taller than I am, still growing. I guess there is no hurry.
I appreciate the time and advice very much. Getting dark now, guess I will go out to see if I can smell her.
Thanks again Charleen
Thanks for explaining bettydee.
It's a very gorgeous flower! ♥
DeeS
I do live close to Cincinatti, so it's a shorter trip, it's 17 miles to cincy from here, I wish you lived like the next street over form me, a couple years ago, I gave 3 brugs to the Krohn conservatory, at Mt. adams which is close to Cincy, anyway
they featured them in their summer sales of tropicals
Elizabeth
Elizabeth , maybe you should be glad that I don't live the next street over from you..if I did you might wake up every morning only to find me walking your yard at daylight, cup of coffee in hand, oohing and awwing over all your beautiful blooms. Course I would have a carafe of coffee or tea, or whatever you prefer, waiting on you...lol ..I love early morning in yard, when all is quiet, except for the birds chirping, and maybe the sound of a water feature, running.oooohh...heaven on earth!..lol
Dee
Elizabeth,I got so lost in the thoughts of early morning in your yard, that I forgot mention, how proud you must have felt, when the Krohn conservatory featured your brugs in their sale. How cool is that!
Dee
DeeS
girl you sound just like me, out in the yard every morning, coffee in hand, just for a little while the Brugs still have that fragrance, also I have a park bench out there under one of the Brugs, so you waking me up early would work just fine,
I have thought about a water feature, I just keep waiting for the big mark down in the fall, one of these days I'll catch one at just the right price
Elizabeth
check out Home depot, they usually start marking them down about this time of year,Want to see mine?. I love fountains andso does DH. Ponds too. You all need to come down here and have a cup of coffee in the morning. I would love it. My Pup like to get in this one. He's got it dirty .
He sits on that table there in the back, i don't know what he thinks he is doing.
Love your fountain, Charleen. I can hear it from here.Have the coffee ready.I'll stop and get Elizabeth, and we will be there in morning.lol..
