Home! But for some reason I didn't sleep last night. Better try for a nap today as I have a rehearsal this evening.

I have another viola link that was sent my way - http://www.violaduo.com/BachProject.html
This features Tanya Solomon on viola - wife of Scott Slapin. They are sending me a review copy of her CD for the Canadian Viola Society Newsletter.

Ann

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Welcome back to your home, Ann ^_^
How lovely that you'll get a viola review CD!

(silly thought - I wonder how often Scott Slapin gets asked if he's related to Scott Joplin, or his name changed to Joplin cuz it's mis-heard LOL Sorry - couldn't help myself!)

Susan

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Welcome home Ann .. hope you do get time for a nap .. the Tanya Solomon link was wonderful .. thanks .. have sent it along to Jordan.

I have concluded, once again, that meteorology is an INexact science. This morning it was cool with foreboding clouds and an even more foreboding forecast, rain and thunder storms ... took Lilly in to be groomed for 9am and by 1130 it was 24C with high humidity ... ahh well .. no SNOW ^_^

Hope everyone is enjoying their day

TGIF everyone ^_^

Sure has been a WET day here .. I think we got quite a bit of rain and it is still happening, but, with less intensity. Will empty the rain gauge tomorrow morning.

Just thought I'd pop in and wish everyone a wonderful weekend ...

~M~

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

And a wonderful weekend to you to Marilynne. We are back in the "oven" again. Hit 37C on my thermometer today. Whew..

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

AKkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk .. 37!! And here I sit with the FURNACE on, looking out at a steady rain ........ Canada, gotta luv it ^_^

Take care all !!

~M~

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

I'd love some rain, Marilynne. With the cloud cover, our overnight low only went down to 22C. With a high today of only 26C, it doesn't have far to go. Looking forward to the break!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Well Don .. we sat outside with a fire going in the chimenea .. and, at about 5pm .. the sun appeared !!! Not that the temps went up, but, just seeing and feeling the sun was aweseome ^_^

Made blueberry pies today as the wild blueberries are in season here, altho, not easily come by. Usually have at least 6 frozen but will have to settle for 2 unless I can find more for sale .. YUMMY !!!

Lots of FALL Fairs happening in the area .. both State side and in our area .. hard to believe they have arrived already ..

Off to do some reading

~M~

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

It always amazes me how quickly July and August fly by. But Fall doesn't officially start until September 22, and I am hanging on to summer with all 10 fingernails...dug in!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I see it's a couple of days since I dropped in. Have had two orchestra rehearsals for the summer orchestra which has a concert on Tuesday. And I'm ON for summer music in church tomorrow. Did a fast run through of one of the pieces yesterday with the church organist. We have a ways to go to get it together tomorrow. She's a quick study and I hope she gets her part together. I know mine! The other two pieces are pretty straight forward.

Made a batch of crabapple jelly this afternoon too. Will cook up the rest of the ca juice tomorrow - it's in a big pan overnight to thaw. I'll likely end up with close to 20 jelly jars - will do some in pints so that I can fit them in my boiling water bath in two lots if I'm lucky.

Raining all day today and tomorrow too, I think. supposed to be nice on Monday. I hope so, because I need to do some gardening. Later in the week, the president and VP of the Ontario Hosta Society are going to visit my garden. If it measures up, it will be on a bus tour for the OHS next year at the end of June. Having been away last week, there is work to be done before they visit.

Have a good night.

Ann

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Busy days here in TBay .. weather has improved lots !!
Had a wedding party here around 1pm .. the sun was perfect for them .. the photographer was just the most awesome young man as well. Love to see them come .. makes my week ^_^

Nice to hear you were able to make so much jelly Ann .. we have crabs, but unfortunately they have been mostly demolished by the deer and a bear ..
How wonderful if you are able to become part of the OHS bus tour .. good luck with your gardening prior to their visit.

I am waiting for the buzzer to buzz to inform me "DINNER IS READY" .........

Best go

YIPES !! Just realised today .. that SCHOOL starts here in TBay tomorrow, will have revise my morning walking pattern for Lilly as she does not like the ROAR of the school buses up and down our road.
Farewell to peaceful mornings on the patio. BUT .. there is always the weekends ^_^

Was on with VCARS today, only had one call .. one is sometimes WAY enough !!

Hope everyone is doing well .. I seem to be intrigued with the fires and the hurricane California way .. intrigued in a way in which I wish I could help the people and the animals (horses etc) .. it's just horrifying to watch the flames grow ans spread ... prayers with the folks there for sure.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

School started today here in Ottawa - for the English school boards. French started LAST week.

Am in from the dress rehearsal for Sinfonia - a summer orchestra that gets together each year and plays one concert. We have a young violinist doing the Bach, E-major violin concerto and a Sarasate showpiece. And we're doing an arrangement of three Canadian Folk songs by Harry Somers. The BIG work on the program is the Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings. It was really to work on that that I took my viola to Vancouver with me. Concert is tomorrow evening.

I've posted some Vancouver pics including some of Leila on the Coffee thread - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1032925/ And DD has posted some videos of Leila on Facebook http://www.youtube.com/user/saraeight There are 9 videos, 5 of which are quite recent.

Have a good night.

Ann

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

I am sitting here smiling a mile .. thanks so much for sharing the links to the pics and the videos Ann .. I thought the 'Mighty Belly' video was TOO precious .. and Leila is certainly growing up fast, and, walking !!
Good luck with the concert ...

Seems to be going to be another nice day here in TBay ... I plan to enjoy it as much as possible .. haircut at 11 AND .. will be taking Lorna to Emerg as she is having a problem with her left foot that is worrying me, one of her toes is quite 'dusky' coloured and very painful .. the nurse in me is saying 'circulatory' and from there it becomes a mixed bag of too many variables !!

Enjoy your day everyone

~M~

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

RESTRAINT .. unlike 'PROCRASTINATION' (which I am the QUEEN of) .. restraint has always been my forte .. until today ..
I am typing this with fingers marred with itty bitty little knife wounds. From what you ask? WELlllllllllllllllllllll .. was driving home to the country, and, lo and behold, there on the side of the road was a vendors stand .. the homemade sign said .. 'CASES of ROMA tomatoes' ......... what's a gurl to do ??!! .. 10 minutes later I had 2 cases loaded in the car .. and home I came .. that was at noon, as of now .. 2.5hrs later .. I have 3 pots of spaghetti sauce on the make on top of the stove .. LARGE pots !!! I am going to have to go back to town tomorrow and buy some containers for it all .. and .. that was only ONE case !!! Looks like a whole lotta salsa may be in my future as the vendor also had cases of peppers (red and green).

Lorna never did go to the emerg .. she went in to work and says she is doing fine .. FIBBER !!!

It's 78F here .. off I go to sit in the sun for a bit

~M~

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Will be scarce for a bit .. Lorna was admitted to hosp for surgery.
Has to endure a barrage of tests prior to same, but, will in the end be having an arterial bypass in her left leg.
This is BIG surgey .. and she is, at present, in a lot of pain.

Keep her in your thoughts and prayer please.

~M~

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Marilyn - my thoughts and prayers go to Lorna, and to you (her caregiver).
Take care, and God Bless.

neighborhood excitement here an hour or two ago.Fire trucks screaming down the street so of course we are all out to see what is happeneing ( last time that happened a year ago there was an arsonist in the aea and 3 hourses burnt down!) Anyway turned out the high winds broke off a tree branch which landed across the power lines just beside the power pole in the back lane next block. Branch was burning. Fire guys sprayed water which was probably not a good thing and there were two VERY LOUD explosions and all the power was gone up and down my street! So we all chatted with neighbors we had never met -nothing like fire trucks to bnring out the neighborhood!

Anyways an hour or so later and the lights are back on thank goodness. I can put all the candles and flashlights away until next time. Sure glad I still have an old fashioned phone at least I could call people - if I could find their phone numbers, which of course are all on the computor or the portable phone!

Ive been working in the garden all week continuing my 'renovations' , almost finished and then can plant bulbs and wait for my peonies to come. A few things still to remove but flowering so dont want to pull them out. I have been donating plants far and wide this month. Now I will have to resist the impulse to plant more things since the whole exercise, at least in relation to my front beds is to simplify!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

oh Carol - you must have been frightened, given the history from last year!

I know what you mean about the phone! My corded phone, with all my phone #s on it, is next to the computer. If I leave the room to use the cordless in the living room, I'm stuck with bringing the cordless to the den, dialing the #, then walking! lol

Calgary, Canada

That was some wind yesterday. This neighbourhood seems okay.
The last wind storm took out all the weak trees, I think.

I am putting in the bulbs this weekend. And continuing my battle with
quack grass and bindweed. They just get ahead of me.
And there are shrubs that need hacking and trees that need logging.
I won't get it all done, but making a list helps me to focus.

Might have to think about protecting things---Tuesday predicted low is 4'C.
That is getting worrisome.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Ouch! I think I'll move back to Winnipeg - they still have summer lol (NOT! I like Calgary lol)

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Sounds as though Clagary has been again going through some weather changes .. it is SO warm here .. not liking it much ..

Have just gotten home from the hospital. I am so so angry. Lorna had tests all morning, nuclear medicine .. it was found that the blockage is in her L calf .. inoperable HERE .. and so .. TUESDAY she will be flown (Air Ambulanced) to Winnipeg for surgery .. I will accompany her either by air or I will drive. Until Tuesday I guess we just hold our breaths and hope her L foot doesn't get any bluer !!!!
I would strongly advise everyone NOT to get sick on a long weekend !!!!!!!!!!!

Keep the good thoughts travelling this way .. sure need'em

We are having lovely conditions here today, not too hot, just 27C, so am enjoying it; it's a refreshing change.

There are many Hospitals that can't handle certain procedures, it's true. Just a couple days ago, a little boy was severely injured when a car rolled over on him near Cranbrook, which is in the East Kootneys here in BC. He was initially transfered to the Cranbrook Hospital from his small town nearby, but he then had to be Airlifted to a Calgary Hosital in Alberta for his treatment. Unfortunate that they must do that in some cases. Even in our small city here in Boundary, we have a small hospital that handles emergencies and outpatient services, but for severe cases, we are transfered to Kelowna or Trail, and in some cases, Airlifted to Vancouver. Doesn't say much for our government Health Care systems, when there aren't enough local health care specialists (or staff) in all of our hospitals.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

but the issue is often that the physicians in the smaller hospitals even a regional one like Cranbrook dont see enough of these cases that require specialist care and so they dont have the experience to handle them, And that applies not just to the doctors but all the staff who deal with the patient And even in the larger centres some things will be centralised - in Alberta for instance all childrens heart surgery is done in Edmonton.

Another nice warm day here although I certainly didnt get any gardening done One of the ASR volunteers who is taking over fund raising came by to pick up all the stuff I had stored in the basement and for lunch.

Yesterday ( before our exciting evening) a local horticulturist/friend called to ask a favor. She does short gardening segments on a local TV morning show . Due to film today and the tree in her front yard was knocked over in the wind storm and could she please come and film in my garden? Sure - she has done that before. She wanted to do planting bulbs and harvesting veggies and ended up also doing a segment on watering because I have a variety of systems. I have never seen these but better watch this time - she said when they started filming in the veggie garden and digging potatoes and carrots Fancy showed up and started to help herself! Apparently the cameraman was quite enamoured of the dogs - Kath says Fancy is in almost every segment !
And then she left me with two gift cards from a local gardening centre and a bag of a variety of bulbs!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

o wow - good for you, Fancy!
but geeze - just when you're trimming down, now you have more to plant! Hmmmmm is your garden trying to tell you something?

Let me know when the segment is on - I'd love to see it!

~Susan~

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

oooh, I love to see that too, but I suppose it will only be local. If and when you have details, you must let us know.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

It s just local

Every Thursday morning I think, maybe about 9am.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Darn....... believe it or not, I don't know how to record off our VCR.....
I have tapes I can play, but my DH has hooked so much up to our TV that it's no longer as simple as it seems........ so I gave up on recording a long time ago.
hmmmmm maybe I could ask for the morning off lol on second thought, I don't think my boss would appreciate that lol
'sides - you don't know Which thursday, do you?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning, what a glorious weekend this is..we've above normal temps I believe and don't we deserve it...as always I've a zillion things planned for the weekend, enjoying the sunshine..

Although much in the garden has bloomed and died off, I've still quite a bit of color...mom's do spoil..she bought me another cherry red phlox and added a royal blue phlox as well...can just imagine their splendor next year...

Better get a move on, hope you are all well and that it's sunshine in your town today!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Things here have escalated yet again. Lorna (?and I) are flying out tomorrow now instead of Tuesday. I decided last night, that due to lack of POSITIVE answers re my FER SURE accompanying her, that I will drive from TBay to Wpg. Will leave early in the morning and likely be at Health Sciences before she is. It's a 7 hour drive,am hoping it'll help me clear my mind and arrive in Wpg with a better outlook as things are looking pretty grim, Lorna now has 3 arteries involved in the shut down of her left foot .. the surgery will be very extensive.
Lorna is terrified and her parents are frantic .. but .. Wpg was the choice made, and, once you speak up, well , forever hold your peace. From what I have heard from others who have gone to WPG for surgery, it IS a good place to be.
We took our son there years ago to have his tonsils removed, he had sleep apnea so doing it here would have been a bit scary, at St. B they were able to monitor him more closely in a step down unit. Funny thing, once the tonsils came out, the sleep apnea left.

AS well .. driving down allows me more leeway in what I can bring with me. I can now bring along my laptop, and a larger suitcase. I just phoned and made a reservation at a place that is attached to the HCS. It's specifically geared to folks from out of town who are there for treatment, or, accompanying a patient. $55./night is wonderful as opposed to the hotel I called where I would have paid $125. I am thinking (hoping fingers and toes crossed) that it'll be much like a nurses residence .. altho .. there is a full bath in each room .. we didn;t have that in training.

Otherwise .. the weather here has been super fabulous .. hot with LOW humidity .. I have hardly been in the gardens ..

Hoping everyone is well .. will keep in contact as I can .. please keep thinking the good thoughts .. they are GREATLY needed.

HUGS

Marilyn - I wish I could be there with you while you go through this with Lorna.
I'd be there in a heartbeat if I hadn't already taken my vacation........
Winnipeg has good health care. They may make people wait in emergency, but when you have an app't already (as you have) then you're Set!
Take care, hon, and I'm confident things will go well.

My thoughts & prayers are with you both (actually, the whole family!)

Keep us updated, as you can, please.

~Susan~

Does anyone have a phone number for Marilynne? Please dmail me.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi folks,

Have stopped in only to read recently. Have been very busy in the garden before we head out tomorrow on another trip. This one will take us with our 44 yr-old Porsche to southern Indiana to the "East Coast Holiday" of the 356 (Porsche) Registry where it will be one of the newest cars there. DH bought it in 1965 - just before they stopped making that model. There's lots to do and I'm just now taking a short break from the throws of packing - takes planning in a car that size to have what we need for a week.

So, I've been reading, but not commenting. The garden has had a lot of work and we are off on another adventure. I don't expect to check in tomorrow as we will be staying with friends, but once we get into a hotel on Wednesday, we may be able to check Internet. When we get to West Baden Springs where this event is being held, we should have Internet for sure.

Ann

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Has anyone heard from Marilynne since she got to Wpg?

Ann, sounds like a great trip. I hope you posts some photos of the gathering.

Wet here, after a long dry summer.

No word from her. Left my number in a cel phone message and a dmail to her. Hope the surgery went well.
