more damage

Write up this a.m. thank goodness no death here but a young man who was tenting lost his life ..park near Durham

'Like a scene out of a movie'

A state of emergency is also in effect in Vaughan, Ont., just north of Toronto, where the storm tore the roofs off houses, uprooted trees and overturned cars. At least one tornado is believed to have touched down there.

Vaughan Mayor Linda Jackson said Thursday's events caused "millions and millions of dollars worth of damage" to the area.

"I'm presently in the Woodbridge area this morning and just coming here, it looks like a scene out of a movie," she said in a phone interview. "It's absolutely unbelievable the destruction that has happened in my community."

Some 175 houses in Vaughan have sustained severe structural damage as a result of the storms, CTV Toronto's John Vennavally-Rao reported Friday morning. Hundreds of others sustained lesser damage.

"Just an incredible scene yesterday, the storms that swept through, we're not entirely sure how many tornadoes may have been associated with this storm," Vennavally-Rao said while reporting from the scene in Vaughan.

"Environment Canada will be out today surveying the damage and trying to establish just how many twisters touched down."

Rob Damiani's parents had the roof torn off their house in Vaughan.

"My parents were inside the house, they were down in the basement, thank God," he told CTV's Canada AM from Vaughan on Friday morning. "When they got out, everything was gone in just a split second."

He said they had been living there for 30 years.

Based on the TV storm footage available on Thursday night, Coulson said the funnel cloud seen in the Vaughan area and in nearby Woodbridge, Ont., was "obviously" a tornado.

Others still need to be confirmed, he said.

The storm also moved through Toronto, where reports suggested that a funnel cloud was seen near the central intersection of Yonge and Bloor Streets.

Incredibly devastating!! Watching on the news last night, prayed for all to be safe in that area. :(

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Have been watching news coverage of the destruction since early this morning .. terrible.

Lorna's folks live in King City, north of Vaughan .. we called THEM last night as we were watching Global news from Toronto and heard the warnings. When we spoke to them, they said it was just lightly raining with a bit of wind .. but .. they would turn the news on and get their "box' ready .. (they have a sort of 'emergency box' they keep by the back door, transistor radio, flashlights, water and candy bars and stuff in it)
We called them about an hour later, by that time Vaughan had been hit and they were fine .. phew ..

If you can believe this .. the FURNACE is on here !!!!!

~M~

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Goodness gracious!
Those that have friends/family in the areas hit must have been frantic, and those living in the areas and got hit should have many prayers said for them...........
Lucky those that didn't get any damage, eh?!

Prayers are being said for everyone who's concerned.....

Victoria Harbour, ON

Lordy, the furnace "M" is it truly cold or are you just not feeling well...think it might be time to turn off the air tonight..you know, many of us don't take these alerts much to heart but since one took most of my trees and devasted our area years ago and 8 died here in Barrie I'm more cautious...better be safe than sorry...

No lunch today, on Fridays because we close at 3:00 we only take 1/2 hr. and I've got to run to get traavelling insurance..wouldn't cross the border without it..tonight I'll pack a light bag and leave about 5:30 in the morning...sister said she won't be able to do much of the driving so guess I will seeing there are only 2 of us and an American Eskimo dog she's rescued and delivering to someone in Virginia...won't be much time for shopping..think I spent my allowance this month with my 2 visits across the border..drats, just maybe I can find a few..lol

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Have a great weekend Betty.

YES .. we had to turn the furnace on around 10am .. it was just 62 in the house !!!!

Lorna's folks called and they have spoken with their friends in Vaughan .. they are OK .. but have NO vehicles .. a tree took out both their cars and has pretty much trashed their garage. The home itself is fine though .. thank heaven .. however, they say the destruction in the area is mind boggling ..

~M~

Victoria Harbour, ON

Several hundred homes destroyed, many other needed major repair..feel terrible about the 11 year old who was at camp and lost his life when storm hit Durham...parents must be devastated...

I think of all the things my grandchildren do and can't even imagine what I would do getting a call like that...can't keep them prisoners in their own homes though, they have to live and enjoy life, but Lordy its frightening...

I've got the air on and you've got the furnace on..still quite muggy..yep, ready to motor first thing tomorrow morning..sure wish my sister would have been ready tonight..cutting everything short leaving tomorrow morning at 7:00...

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

I guess Betty is one her way by now .. gonna be a jam packed trip.

Looks as though we have a lovely 'Fallish' day on the horizon .. 21C and sunny with a cool NW breeze
Have my Uncle Jacks 90th BDay to attend this afternoon .. seems longevity is a definite factor on my Mom's side of the family. When I think about being alive at 90, well, I sorta cringe !!

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend !!

Happy Birthday to your Uncle Jack!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

We are back. Went out to Langley, BC - Newlands Golf and Country Club which has an amazing brunch. We are VERY well fed. Met up with another of DH's cousins who lives closer to Chilliwack as well as the whole Vancouver continguent - DD, DSIL, DH's cousin and her 91 yr-old mother and DH's other 93 yr-old aunt who flew in from Portland, OR. To look at her walk, you wouldn't think she was a day over 70 or even younger.

Hey dee ho ..

The viola concert yesterday was wonderful .. too short !!!
My friends niece is VERY talented, and, since she is only 19 .. I guess I can say .. 'the WORLD is her Oyster'

The harvest from the veg garden is well amazing, my countertops have wee baskets of yellow and green beans, finger potatoes and mini carrots .. cooking them all is becoming the challenge ... needless to say there will be blanching and bagging going on.

I think one of my nieces is at Trinity College in Langley Ann .. not absolutely sure though.
Sounds as though you are having a super time though.

Off to start whippin supper together ^_^

Jordan Bergmans Coming Home Recital

THUNDER BAY, ON, --- August 23, 2009 ---- A private recital given at St. Paul’s United Church on Sunday afternoon August 23rd presented a rare musical delight. The first delight due to the fact that this recital was for solo viola, and those are rare in this city, the second delight was how a good dose of conservatory training can produce wonderful results in the person of Jordan .

Johann Sebastian Bach is known to have favoured playing the viola, at least that was the instrument he liked to play with family and friends, perhaps it was a desire to play a middle harmony instrument, or perhaps he was the only one in the house that could play viola. It is sad that he did not write a suite for solo viola as he did for the violin players and cellists. Instead the viola players must play transcriptions of the Bach Cello Suites. It sounds simple the viola is basically a cello that plays one octave higher. The problem is the cello is played the other way around compared to the viola and that means the viola’s strings are backwards compared to the cello. This can make playing these challenging pieces all the more so when playing them on a viola.

Jordan Bergman opened her recital with the transcription of the Bach Cello Suite in E flat major. This takes a lot of courage or competence to do this. After listening to a few bars I knew it was because she had the talent to play this music well.
The balance of the recital was accompanied by Derek Oger; I am amazed that he was able to do this recital on short notice the way he did. His piano work in Darius Milhaud’s Quatre Visages demanded that he be a part of the musical dialog between viola and piano. Quatre Visages consists of four movements each portraying a different character. Both the pianist and the soloist did justice to the music.

The closing piece was the Romanze by Max Bruch. Anyone who ever sent their kids to the Suzuki string program will recognize his famous violin concerto, but Bruch also wrote chamber music for lesser played instruments. This was my first hearing of the Romanze and Bruch was a true romantic throughout. Max Bruch could always generate a good melody, and the find the perfect harmony to express that melody. The Bergmans /Oger combination really brought the charm of this piece to the surface and it shone!

Jordan Bergmans was born in Tours France, and has been playing the viola from age 6. At 17 she received her Diplôma de Fin d’Etudes in viola, musical theory and chamber music and then begun he studies at the Royal College of Music, London England, this fall she will return to London for her 3rd year of her Bachelors Degree. She maintains a busy performance and study schedule in London. She is in Thunder Bay visiting relatives and the recital was intended to show family how much she has learned in the 7 or more years since she was last here. Let’s hope that she does not take that long for her to return.

It sounds like a wonderful recital! I'm partial to the viola, having played it in my early teens. Rare to have a solo performance, that's true.

o my - how wonderful a review for Jordan! Y'know something....... I don't believe I've ever hear the viola....... I'm going to have to click the link ^_^

~Susan~

aw darn - I'd hoped to hear her playing.............

~Susan~

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Marilynne - thanks for the review of the viola recital. There are 6 of those "cello" suites and the 4th in E-flat major is not one of the "easy" ones which are often played although the first 5 are frequently played on viola. The 6th suite is thought to have possibly been composed for a different instrument and is very difficult to do well on a regular 4-stringed viola. Some people use a 5-stringed instrument which also has an E-string like the violin or some make many changes of octave in some parts.

There are those in the viola world who insist that just maybe, Bach actually wrote the suites for the viola since he liked the viola. That's not likely but there does not exist an original manuscript in Bach's hand. The only manuscript is by Anna Magdalena Bach.

Anyway, it sounds like a lovely recital. Glad it went well.

We met one set of friends for lunch today and another friend for a beer at 4 before coming back and babysitting Leila while her parents go out to dinner and a movie in the local park.

Ann

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

It was quite a treat to have been able to go to the concert. Jordan is quite talented as well as being an incredibly nice young woman.

Glad to hear things are going well in BC for you Ann .. it sure is 'still' here this morning, and , muggy .. we had 2 rather noisy and BRIGHT storms overnight, so , I am unsure as to what this humidity bodes for us.

Smokey goes to the vet today for his follow up appt .. he is doing a lot better in the 'breathing dept' but .. the 'windows' shaved on either side of him are now itchy I guess and he is licking at them !!! I KNOW he would NEVER wear the 'cone collar' so am thinking of going and buying him a child's TShirt ... someone thought he'd look cute in a ONESIE .. that's like a babies undershirt and pants all together .. I think he'd HATE that LOL

Hope everyone is having a wonderful week ^_^

Hi Marilynne,

Shannon, here - I'm new to this current group, & have been away from DG for a while but glad to be back. Your comment about Smokey (a kitty?) reminded me of my mom's cat - he had to go in for surgery, and needed something to prevent licking/chewing for a while afterwards. She got a couple of onesies like you mentioned from the nearest thrift store, and sewed the holes somehow so it fit snugly around him - he seemed to tolerate it quite well. But then one day he came home (outdoor cat - rural area) not wearing it and they never saw it again. :-) Guess it was time. :-) Anyway good luck at the vet.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Good morning, all - those with cats, or dogs, or other companions, I hope they continue to bless you with their antics LOL

Animals are such funny things ^_^

I'm watching my own cat, Baby, cuz of an incident with my self-cleaning oven.
I got one, used, and have never used the Clean option.
Well, I did last night, was in the house for 1/2 hour after I started it, then went out to the hot tub for 20 minutes. When we came in the house, it was filled with white chemical "smoke". Our eyes & throats were burning, and I am concerned for Baby........
I told my DH to empty her water, and wash it out, cuz I'm sure the chemical dust would have contaminated it, and her food dish. He emptied that too, and gave her fresh.
Unfortunately we're both at work during the day, so I'll have to check her tonight. I'll monitor her for a couple of days...... I know she's low to the ground and the cloud was at the ceiling (for about a foot down), but her system is little, so I'm not sure how this will affect her.
We put the air conditioner, ceiling fan in living room & bathroom on, and opened all the windows. I stood there at our main door (in the middle of the house, nearest the stove) and waved it open back & forth. I couldn't shut the stove cleaner off, though. It had to go through it's timing, I guess........

Marilyn the T shirt usually works really well depending on where the offending area is located. I have also used 'belly bands' if it is back towards the hind lefs or groin area.
Heres a pic of one of my ex fosters in her T-shirt.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Heres a belly band pic - it is on Bailey for demo and is really two small for him - it should cover a wider area on the belly.

Susan I have a self clean oven and have never had anything like you describe. Wonder if there is something wrong?

Dunno Carol, but when I tried the Convection Broil, the fan went all Wonky, and it sounded like something was broken....
My DH bought it from his boss (they won 5 appliances, and were selling off the old ones), and it's a beautiful stove (very clean).
I may have left a broiler pan in, with some grease ( I MAY have, if it got missed in the washing-up I did last night.......I can't recall, so I'll check when I get home tonight).

I'm just worried about my cat. Hope she's ok. I can do the Manual clean, and not use the Convection Broil. Never had it before, so can do without it again....

Hiya ..

Well .. I purchased 2 babies TShirts at a thrift store .. will cut the arms off .. there were a few 'Onsies' there .. and if the TShirt is a bust .. I'll be buying a couple of them and making a hole for his tail to stick out ..
Love the pics of the Shelties Carol .. Smokey would do well with the 'bellyband' as that's where his shaved spots are .. he has a 'window' on each side ..

Welcome to the group Shannon .. glad to have ya .. needless to say you'll start to figure out who has what in the animal dept on here ^_^
I have Smokey (a Russian Blue cat) and Lilly a West Highland White Terrier (Westie).

OMG Susan .. what a disaster !! I have yet to use my auto clean setting on my gas oven as it's not quite a year old .. but I know when I used it on my electric oven it did tend to smell the first couple of times .. the store fella told me it was because the heat gets SO intense .. I do believe he said 500F or more !!! And .. once that puppy is LOCKED and doin its thing .. I think the ONLY way to stop it is to unplug it from the wall.
I think Baby should be OK .. fingers crossed ..

The weather is just incredible here .. prior to 8am it was perfectly still and so humid .. and, at 8am it was as if someone had flicked a switch .. the wind strarted to blow, the temp fell and the humidity broke .. it's a lovely day now :o)
That said .. I am off to the patio ..

Enjoy

~M~

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

thing is, Marilyn, the stove wasn't new....... it's from my DH's boss who won 5 new appliances, and his wife wanted to take them lol

I'm sure Baby will be fine as she was low to the ground, but still - I'm going to watch her....

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

I was just wondering if the prior owners had ever used the 'self clean cycle' when they owned it ? Had they not used it, then, when you used it the appliance had never before experienced heat of that intensity.
I have often wondered if chemicals somehow 'released' when the cycle is used .. but .. I tend to think it is just intense heat that kinda 'cremates' any goo in yer oven.

Well .. Smokey is NOT happy with his MoM (that'd be me) ..I put the lil TShirt on him, works like a charm .. but he is NOT happy .. amd going to post 2 pics .
I do have to say though, that the shirts DO cover his 2 shaved spots ^_^

Awww, poor baby! If only they could understand that it's for their own good. Smokey is a lovely cat. ^_^

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

o gosh - your Smokey looks like my Smokey used to. I had to euthenize her, but I still have her baby - my cat Baby lol
btw - Baby looks just fine. I could still smell the chemical odor when I came home. I checked her eyes and she looks bright enuff. Can't tell by her movements, cuz she's a fat ole cat, and doesn't move much (and she's only 6 1/2 yo!) lol she waddles when she walks and people have asked if she's pregnant! We don't over-feed her, and don't feed her the molasses-laced cat food (only use stuff from the pet store - natural stuff). I guess she just doesn't get enuff exercise! I should take her to the gym with me.
Hey Fancy - you have a cat exerciser @ your gym?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the welcome, Marilyn. Smokey is adorable! And seems to be content enough in the first photo ... I think he's just pulling a guilt trip. :-)

I have Sophie (tortie) and Scruffy (orange/white, diabetic). Here's one...

Shannon .. your 2 furries are adorable .. sorry to hear Scruffy is diabetic .. initially when Smokey ran into his problem 10 days ago .. that was one of the things running through my head .. but .. he is A OK in that dept.
Sophie is so pretty .. love the Tortie colouring ..

Susan .. so happy to hear Baby is OK .. and .. I am beginning to think almost everyone has had a SMOKEY in their lives at one time or another !!
While sitting in the vets reception area yesterday, 2 other 'waiters' were peeking into his kennel and commenting that they had had a cat like him, or, knew of someone who had.

I actually have a 'day off' today .. good thing as the next few days are FULL .. Hospice on Thurs and VCARS on Friday and somewhere in there Lilly goes to be groomed. I need a grooming too ^_^ made an appt for next Tuesday to get a haircut.

Looks to be an awesome day out there ..

ENJOY

Good Morning, M - my mom & brother have a "Smoke" in their lives lol It's a male, and looks it - with the square jaw & all lol

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

We head back to Ottawa this afternoon. Will wave as we fly over.

It's been a good visit. Time to see friends as well as family. Now DD and DSIL are both working and Leila's in day care. We'll head out around noon. I'll practice the viola a bit first as I didn't get a chance to do so yesterday - DD and Leila were both around and when she's napping, the house is too small.

TTYL once back home.
