Trina, I sure hope you are working with your healing stone today!

I had to look up what those birds were. The magpies are very pretty. Where as, at least for me, the ibis has a scarry looking beak. They sure look bigger than a pigeon.

Kassy, that bird in your tree must be a woodpecker!! lol

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

You remember I have 2 avocado trees, right? Well, one has rust color on its leaves, mostly along the edges but also in spots. I don't know if this photo is too good but take a look and see if you know what it going on. For the past 3 days I have given it distilled water, more than it needed so it just rinses through.

Julie do you have any idea what it is?

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

not yet. I was surfing around yesterday, but read that what we may mistake for an actual "rust" is usually not. I remember it was an article on the NHGC website, though. I'll take a look when I get home.

the problem I have is that our computer (OURS! ALL OURS!) is upstairs in DH's studio. The kids have the mac in the dining room. So if I go surfing around, I'm alienated from the rest of the fam.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

worked just fine until 1 particular child got here....now I have to focus my energy on not killing him

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Aaah! When does his dad get home? I can't imagine all the trouble your kids get in!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

You know what I hate? You try to look up something on the Internet. You open the site and it is only words when you are trying to ID something. And why do they have to make sentences like this???

It is suggested that the fungicidal activity of the phenylenediamines is correlated with the polarographic halfwave potentials.

What in . . . . does that mean?

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

just this one inparticular gets in trouble all the time...usually with the police

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

that's a mouthful Venice! phrlylenediamines are: chemically synthesised ingredients

I googled the rest and can't make heads or tails of it!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Leaves get a little brown around the edges for lots of reasons, and many of them have nothing to do with disease; light, water, fertilizer, salt build up in the pots, heat damage...these can all cause browning .

Rust is a fungus that affects the leaves by growing on them. If you have rust, lightly pinch the leaf between your thumb and forefinger and slide your fingers over the rusty area. If Rust fungus is present, your fingers will have a rusty looking smudge on them. If that happens, remove the infected leaves and put them in the trash, NOT the compost and treat the plant with a fungicide recommended for rust. There are products out there to help prevent it, and should be available at your garden center.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

What that means Venice, is that you have accessed a Botany major, or professor, or chemists latest paper on topincs that are of no value to the home gardener, unless you also happen to have a degree in one of the related fields....you may find this more helpful.

I need Ican for this one!

Ican, what way is north from looking at this rock?

Thumbnail by kassy_51
Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Kassy, pretty little flowers. Ok, for the rock, is North facing at 10:30? Just a guess.

Jean, well, my tree doesn't have plant or leave rust!

I was reading about avocado tree diseases that says in so many words, it is vulnerable to everything. Big help!

I have been cutting off the discolored leaves. For a while I was just cutting the edges off which I think I better continue to do so I don't end up with only an avocado trunk!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Venice, this may be of some use to you...there seems to be a fair amount of general info here.

http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs/plantsci/landscap/pp744w.htm

I didn't think it did from the way you were talking.....could be a humidity problem, sun scald, over fertilization. This link has some pretty good info.

North would be towards the Arctic, above Canada.

Moon & Dave I need your help!

Moon, great article! I wish I saw that earlier this afternoon!!!

I really think it is the salts from the water, like Dave suggested, because I have eliminated all those other things.

Now, considering the mineral content of Indianapolis, what type of soil and compost should I use to repot the trees. I think we have plenty calcium in our water, but what about all those other minerals? I would hate to think I would have to continue to give them distilled water.

Mineral Content Drinking Water
Honolulu HA 10.27 5.93 4.33 3.10 70
Indianapolis IN 23.25 67.00 11.78 2.13 92
City State Mg Ca Na KMg Rank

Soil plus 50/50 compost and sand - per Avo article
Compost & manure & calcium carbonate - per Dave

Thanks Jean!

Here is Jade. The lighter colored stone is Nephrite; darker is Jadeite.

and hello gang! :)
long day (good day though)
Kassy I can see those rocks! Stop teasing me! lol just kidding.

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

No venice, actually north was at about 1:30 on that rock..
I put it in because Ican said I blew her belief that moss only grows on the north side of the trees.
What about a flat to the ground rock then?..........LOL
Hint, it was facing the same way as the other rock was!

Venice, mine doesn't have the rust that's in your link. It's more 2-dimensional. I couldn't get moons link to work. Too many browsers open (DH's music sites)

Keaau, HI

Mineral content of water should not be a large problem unless it is saline.

One problem with Avocados in your area is that they are tropical plants, and may not make good houseplants.

Soil from your area, mixed with compost, manure, and CaCO3 should work okay.

Here is Flourite.

Hi Rachel! Good evening everybody.

Hi Lynnie, told Kassy we couldn't hide those rocks from you.....
Venice, personally I would use a good basic potting soil and add compost to it. The sand is to facilitate drainage when using regular soil....You can always get a couple gallon jugs and draw water and let it sit for a couple days before you water. Sometimes it is the chlorine content that burns, and that evaporates out rather quickly.

I like the Jades....saw a small carving of a palace made from jade....what skill. Thanks for sharing Dave.

Any body seen Ican?

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

A very big rock ^_^

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Hi Rachel....good evening to everyone....got some stuff to take care of....back later

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Moon, letting the water set is a great idea. I know there is a lot of chlorine in our water here. My son use to do that for the water for his goldfish that were in a regular fish bowl.
