That's why you were a SPED like me. We had to work around all those rules, coming in through the back door to accomplish what needed to be done. It's not about the "right way" to do something. It's about doing anything and everything until you find something that works. We are a determined group.

I have Growing to Show. Nancy autographed a copy of her Pests and Diseases for my classroom. The kids love that one. You know kids, especially the boys, and bugs. I also ordered quite a few leaves from her. She was wonderful to work with, very helpful. I keep her filled in on the progress with our plant project. I will look into getting the CDs. That sounds interesting.

But I think those Pittman cds........are doing it the Texas way........and I don't grow mine that way........can't remember.........will ask Nichole.........or Marjorie

I don't know what the Texas way is. Did you read the list of Rob's that I sent you?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes and I am drooling.................jealous as can be..............we have to find a way to trade (for my benefit....lol)........but you have to give me at least one month........that is all and then I will be able to trade fairly........

Waiting is not a problem. The babies will be bigger by then and the temperatures will be better for shipping. It will be like Christmas in September.

Here is Lillian in Lace. (STD) Notice how every plant in the picture except for the main subject is in focus. I couldn't have done it on purpose if I'd tried....
anyway, there are some little buds peeking out from under the leaves, can't wait to see the flowers on this one!

I was in a thrift store the other day and they had an old "Growing African Violets" book there. Black and white pics, nothing too exciting. I didn't even find it worth the 25 cents they wanted....but I did look thru it and about watering, it said that one should never water until the violet started to wilt. I never heard that before!

That may be true to a certain extent about streps........but never never heard that about avs........

But I do remember my aunt had african violets under a bar between her kitchen and breakfast room........she had fluorescent lights above her violets. She added exactly 1/2 cup of water each week from the bottom of the african violets......and they were beautiful......and they must have been somewhat dried out each week before she watered the 1/2 cup.

I don' think so either, especially with the miniature AV's. Of course they usually bounce back, but constantly waiting until they wilt can't be good. I do wait until they are 99% dry, but not so that they sit around like that for a few days. I check them all at least every other day, so if they are dry, they have only been that way for a very short time before I water again.

I really believe that it is best to stay on the underwatered side, even with violets, but don't like to see them so dry that they wilt.

All my avs get wicked but not my streps....................

I was happily surprised to get home after four days and see all of my violets so happy. We did water them right away, but they looked great. My hubby changed the light times down to four hours a day on the timer while we were gone. They did great. I was so happy. That is the longest time I have left them.

Sally,That's great!!

I agree underwatering (to a degree) is better than overwatering and I prefer to underwater a lot of things, just a little, but letting AVS get to the wilt point, then flooding is a sure killer!! They may look very nice for a while, but eventually the damage to both the leaves and roots will catch up with you. IMHO.

Yes, you do have to be careful. I think a few hours less light was the key. They didn't have to get over dry.

I have found adding even more perlite and vermiculite is fantastic for my plants too.

Sally,
That sounds right.Too much light might have really dried them out.
