Leaf Variegation

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Gail--you and Chu-Lin gave me an idea with your photos of your gorgeous Pink Patches, and Chu-Lins pretty variegated leaf noid. I have little in bloom at the moment, but lots of interesting leaves. I bet others do also. A good excuse to post photos!

My pinks have been more vivid--it is cool in here, I'm thinking a little more light is wanted by them--it is at a premium around here.

Simply georgeous. I love varigatged leaves for that reason. You still have a pretty looking plant even if it has no flowers. Great pictures.
You gave me the idea to go and take pictures of my varigated AVs. LOL

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Great! That was my goal Eileen!

Isn't it amazing how many different variegation patterns there are? They are all beautiful. I'll have to agree with you Lynn, want list is getting sooooo long!!

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Love your Witch Doctor and Plum Peacock, Jan and Bonnie. The variegation is gorgeous.

Fantastic variegated leaves. I love them so much. I love Chicago Flair. The pink flowers are the sweetest, softest color. The leaves are wonderful. Blooms constantly.

Come on............phoebes..............we need names (lol)

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Sigh--#1--Smitten Kitten
--#2--Mac's Virtually Velvet--used to have a lot of pink variegation under lights, has been in window for several months now.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

They are both beautiful and thanks for making the effort to see their names.............let's see what they look like in bloom. (although they don't NEED blooms to be great looking)

Smitten Kitten (9956) 03/22/2008 (Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses/S. Sorano) Semidouble lavender pansy/purple eye. Variegated dark green, white and pink, heart-shaped, girl foliage. Miniature

Oh thanks, now I have an even bigger list of names! Seriously, thank you! Stupid questions here, but forgive the novice, OK? I know what a NOID is, but what do the initials stand for? I came up with No Official Identifying Designation...but that seems rather long and complicated. And here's the other stupid question...which is easier to grow (or is there no difference)...standards, semi-minis, or minis? I tried a bunch of minis about 5 years ago and killed them all. I lived in a different apartment with no direct sunlight. (Should have grown mushrooms!) ChuLin

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

We may have to talk you into just getting one gro light to hang from under a cabinet, etc.............space wise, standards take up a lot of room and can get up to 12 or 18" across.......I like minis and semi minis as they don't take up much space................I don't think one is easier or harder to grow though.

I think your words of defining what NOID means sounds great to me.........have no idea..........
You can get a fixture and full spectrum lights(called Gro Lux) at walmart..............

MSU, MS(Zone 8a)

I thought NOID meant "no i.d." but I really am not sure.

Pat

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

You are correct Pat!!
I love the different pictures of variegation ^_^.
Minis and semis should have a little more light than standards the experts say.....but at the same time if they start to bunch up in the centers they can sometimes do better in natural light ??
Suckering can be a more of a problem, especially if plants go from very wet to very dry, rather than evenly moist.

Just my opinion.....standards are easiest, but semis and minis are well worth a little more care.

Lynn

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

The reason I think standards are a little harder is I can't get good symmetry. I try and follow the '3' rule of removing the leaves, but i just don't 'get it'. Our club president has ordered me books and even CDs trying to help me learn how to remove which leaves.

Atco, NJ

Gail, what books? What CDs? You know I mainly do minis. But I'm always open to learning more about all of them. Is that the teacher part of us coming out again? Learn more, teach more.

Atco, NJ

Rob's Club Soda - Check out the pink leaves in this one. They are as pink as the flowers.

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

Oh Pat, this one is so pretty.....too!! LOL!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I adore this one............want a leaf (lol)

The main book I get the most from is:
"Growing To Show"
How to Grow Prize Winning African Violets
by Pauline Bartholomew and The African Violet Society of America, Inc.
Revised 2008

Then there are two CDs (nichole is bringing them back today) about the Pittman Way of Growing......they are some of the best hybridizers for miniature avs.........

I can't find the book on Pests and Diseases..........but I couldn't understand that one anyway......

They are all available on the AVSA site in the store......
http://www.avsa.org/Store/AVSAStore.html

Just for fun I bought the book on 50 years with the AVSA............haven't read it yet.
Marjorie wanted me to buy the one about judging......I have it but I don't like rules (LOL)>>>>>I did buy it but don't care what the judges think (isn't that terrible)....I think beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.
