I'm having to log in over and over

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Is it just me? This has been happening for the past few days but has been really bad today. I click to go to a new page and I'm logged off and have to log in again. Click on another page and I have to log in again.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Have you changed anything with your browser, the security settings, firewall, etc?

Terry is on the right track.

Some software products have a setting to automatically clear your cookies every so often. That would log you out for sure, since the cookies are what maintains your login.

I also have a "login" problem, but a different variation. Staying logged in to navigate through the site doesn't seem to be a problem, but when I try to edit "My Preferences" on my Member Page, the system doesn't recognize the fact that I am logged in.

Here's a screen shot of the first page that comes up, I'll follow it with the page that comes up next.

Clicking the login in link and filling out the info on this page brings up the "give us your zip code" page, still no access to editing my preferences.

Happenstance, this is almost certainly a bug in Norton or some other software on your system. To help me find out what might be causing it, please click here:

http://davesgarden.com/tools/prefs/preferences.php

Then copy and paste all the information you see on that page (if you see anything) in a dmail to me. Don't post it here since it'll have some private information (your IP address, etc).

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I have to log in every time I come to DG too.

Even stranger, some of the lines between the boxes on the forums disappeared a few months back. I believe it was right after I updated Firefox. Have there been any updates or patches issues for Firefox since you announced there was a newer version (or test version...)?

I've not been on this computer too much so I don't remember when the log in issue started. It's been set as my home page for years.....

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

it's happening to me too.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

We are running McAfee. Anybody else?

Thoughts Dave?

It's not a big deal, everything still works fine. I'm just wondering what changed.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

This is happening again today. I'm certain it's not anything in my software because it's so sporadic and I've had this software for over a year without it happening before recently. I'll have no problem for days and then I'll have it happen several times in a row. It isn't happening when I leave DG and come back, it's happening as I'm browsing around DG. I'll click on a page and all of a sudden I'm logged out.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Is there a particular area you're hitting that seems to cause this? Can you switch browsers and see if the problem persists?

Also, it's possible that your cookies got messed up at some point in the past. If you can, please delete all the cookies you have for the davesgarden.com domain and then log back in. I bet that would solve the problem once and for all.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I deleted all my cookies, checked for Firefox updates, closed down my computer and came back.

If I leave the same window up, I can leave DG and come back without having to log in again. If I close that window or open a new window, I have to log in again.

I wouldn't be surprised if my kids changed something on my computer but I don't know what!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Have any of you that are having this issue installed the newest Firefox update?

Every few hours it asks me if I want to install it, but then also warns that the update might cause instability in some of the extensions. (Or something like that). I've been telling it no because the warning worried me and I don't feel like trying to fix whatever the update might mess up.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Yes, I have this problem as Badseed too and I think it's from the Firefox update. It erases my login on any site once I close the windows. I asked about it here a few months back when it first started and didn't get any definite answers so now I just deal with it, although it's annoying.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

You might post in the Computer Talk forum if nobody here knows--I'm pretty sure it's a setting somewhere that you can tell it to clear your cookies every time you close your browser. I don't have that version of FF so I don't know where you would go to change that, but I'm sure someone in the computer forum would know (or you might start by looking through the various preference options--chances are it's in there somewhere)

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I've just updated my FF in the last few days and have not had any problems.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

I've been having the same problem. I'm sure it's a firefox issue but I sure can't find it.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I've been having the same issue for over a week now too. Not a biggie, except I have to wait for various adds to load before I can log in. Just now thought to check this forum to see if anyone else was having the same issue.

Ya'll that are having problems, please do this:

Go to Edit, Preferences.

Click on the "Privacy" tab. What do you have for that first option ("Firefox will: ")

If it's set to "Use custom settings", do you have it set to only remember the cookies for a certain time? Is it set to clear out your history and cookies when you shut down? There is a screenshot below of what my settings look like.

I don't know about all of you, but I checked Calif_Sue's logs on the server and indeed, her computer is forgetting her cookies for some reason. This must be a setting in the firefox.

So, please check it and let me know.

Yep, that's what mine looks like ( only I access it under Tools>Options)

Same here: Tools, options, same as Sue's. I still have to log in each time I close the window. Like I said earlier, it's not a big deal. I'm still wondering what changed. I checked and have version 3.5.2.

Quoting:
I'm still wondering what changed.

That's the trouble - nothing at all has changed and so I'm really at a loss here as to what the problem might be.

Would one of you (Calif_Sue?) go into that same preference page as before, and click on "Show Cookies". Then at the top of the next screen, search for "davesgarden". Then click on the "dguser" cookie and then dmail a screenshot of that page to me? (Don't post the screenshot here, since it might contain a little bit of private information)

Thanks for sending that, Calif_Sue.

Is this happening to you on other sites, also?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Sorry Dave, I've been off and running. I just sent you the screen shot too.

Thanks for looking into this.

Thanks Badseed. Both your and Calif_Sue's showed the cookies had been set correctly.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Yes, it happens on other sites that I also used to automatically stay logged in on.

Hmm, well, that helps me but not you.

Have you installed and other firewall or anti-virus software recently? Are you even using any? If so, which ones? Many of these firewall/virus software packages "helpfully" delete your cookies every so often.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

MY free AVG does periodic updates. Now I know nothing about firewalls, I just pretend to know things about my computer at times, ^_^ I stumble around or look up things until I find things I need.

Moss Point, MS(Zone 8b)

I started having this problem after I manually updated AVG and ran a deep scan. It affects most sites and is an aggravation. It didn't mess with Ebay. I'm not a computer whiz and will surely watch this thread hoping for a solution.

North Augusta, ON

That is weird. I have mine set to only keep cookies until I close firefox, which I do every night...yet I never have to log in. Do you think it could be a windows setting doing this to you all?? somewhere in control panel settings area?

Shenandoah Valley, VA

It's started up again and I'm not using Firefox but IE8. I tried deleting the cookies as you suggested, Dave. (They aren't being deleted by my antivirus.)

It will be fine for days and then start up again. It's happened twice since yesterday evening. Just now I was looking at a thread in the Dahlias forum and *poof* I was logged out and had to log back in.

I haven't had this happen on any other site. I'm using the same Norton 360 I've had for over a year. I haven't made any changes to anything.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Today its been back to normal for the first time here since it started last month. Haven't had to log in again since this morning.
