bTW.. the Brug Sprout off sign up thread has been posted :)

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Well that site said it sprouts in about 4 weeks or so but can take 15 to 20 years to flower from seed
And I done read that sprout off thread

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Well I am not sure that mine will be any good now. As they were dry when I got them and I didn't know to keep them moist. Oh well :(((((((

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Time to get our scramble on . . .

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Welcome home KT2 I missed you....
The compost questions....in my experience...the compost heap needs air circulation. It is hot in the bag but I am afraid to hot...the nugs worms or yes maggots wont hurt anything they are just yucky...keep it moist and circulating and you'll be all set...

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

What Robin said . . .

I missed you, too, Robin, but thought about you with jealousy every day that I spent in that cool Maine weather - lol. It was gorgeous in the 70s and rained one day. I almost forgot what rain was living out here!

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

the compost needs to be able to 'drain' so you may want to poke a few holes int he bag to allow excess water to escape.. too wet is just as bad as too dry.

maggots really only are attracted to animal byproducts, so unless you threw in meat or bones into your compost, i highly doubt it is maggots.. grubs yes.. and too much moisture can contribute and will also encourage fungus and molds... so make sure its the consistency of a damp sponge and not waterlogged.

compost should be turned every so often to aid in breakdown... this will also help encourage earthworms and discourage so many of the other grubs...everything is a balancing act. check to make sure you are adding sufficient amounts of 'greens' to your 'browns' and vice versa... more browns than greens ideally... about 1 part greens to 4 parts browns, roughly.

Congratulations to Davesrq for winning the auction tonight. Great job. Thanks everyone who participated, and new seeds will be going up at 8:30. Does anyone have a suggestion of what seeds they would like to see up there?

BTW... who is the 11th participant of the Brug Sprout Off???

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Mindy - did the Moonbush arrive alright?

Sorry we were a little late tonight posting the new seeds for auction. I was trying to see what others wanted to see go up, asking for suggestions. GREAT BIG THANKS TO CUE for providing the links for the information to the seed and doing a fast job at getting it all up there. I've also added 10 datura double purple/white seeds and 2 Salmon perfection-brug. to the list. These were from a trade, so I have no other info on them. ALL other seeds I put up for auction were new and purchased from plant nursery places.(seed companies) These are the first ones I got in trades, I have put up.

Cue you have dmail.

Look what came in the mail today! One more contestant to go and we're off and sprouting! Friday is our deadline. :)

Any one know anything about computers? Mine just knocked me off again and just got back on. The computer put up a window saying something about a pop up add causing this problem tonight. I have satelite and this is agrivating. It acts like dial-up sometimes drooping a call. ANY ideas? Got an app. for monday to have it checked.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

you put in a new tuul bar or program lately Jan?

NO,but I went to check out facebook a few weeks ago and it's been acting up ever since. I'm afraid I did something or got a virus or something. BUT the computer place said it could be anything. It freezes up and won't move, then blinks off, and sometimes can't get asignal for a while again to get back on. Sometimes it starts right back up.

Night everyone, I figure I'll shut it down before it can do it to me.LOL. Back maybe tomorrow.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Good morning everyone
Cue the moon bush is doing just fine it will be planted out this evening after it cools off (and I figure out just where I want it LOL)
Congratulations to Davesrq for winning the auction.
Another day of scrubbing the floor for me.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Good morning everyone! I worked outside all day yesterday ;) I added my first few layers in the lasagna bed. First I wet the cardboard down and put newspaper where I needed to overlap. Then I added grass clippings, shredded paper, some old lettuce and a nice layer of horse manure and watered again. I started cutting down that ugly tree looking thing that was in my lasagna bed crawling up the siding, lol. Question: I deadheaded my hydrangeas.. can I put those in it? I was so happy with what I did that I decided to run into town and get more cardboard boxes and layed them down on the north side of the house to start another lasagna bed for a veggie garden next spring/fall.. Things are looking up! Another question: scramble, what is it and how to I join and when do we have seed auctions? Gonna go do some horse stuff.. bbl...hagd e1

Morning All! Just checking out my new Kodak V803 camera. Daughter Becky gave it to me after buying a new Nikon Cool-Pix. Took this photo just minutes ago in my marigold patch.

Very nice, Al! Looks like you got a good one. I have always been happy with Kodak digital cameras. Oh and Cue, I would love some Magnolia seed if you could share. I bought 2 on eBay a few months back and I'm afraid they didn't make it. They did great until I planted them then the leaves turned brown and that was all she wrote..

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Al that picture makes me like marigolds again LOL It's amazing how beautiful and different flowers look when taken up close.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

mechelle - yes, you can add any vegetation from your garden ( as long is it isnt seeding at the moment)... and I believe either mekos or Flower has the magnolia seed?

I may be wrong but it's my understanding with Magnolia, the seeds need to dry from the burr, then go through a cold winter_(or fridge,) and then soak and plant. That is just my opinion and the only way I ever got sprouts. It takes a long time to sprout and 5-7 years for a bloom after it's growing.I personally would put seeds ADTER they are ripe and dry, in the fridge for 3-4 weeks and then soak for 24 hours, then plant in potting soil and wait, if you want them fast. BUT nature does a good job all by itself if you just get ripe seeds, dry them and put in potting soil and forget them, and spring time, early summer, you will see little green shiny stem pop out and start putting out green shiny leafs. That is just me though. That is the easy way. BUT I don't have any seeds ripe this year yet. Will have some later on this summer/fall.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

weird.. ive always heard it was best to get them planted BEFORE they dry out.. otherwise, they dont have a very high germination rate...LOL... just goes to show, what works for one may not work for another.

Hi Mechelle

I have the Magnolia seeds. They're just starting to fall from the tree. I'll send you some with the Brugs. :)

These Manolia seeds are fresh and moist. If they don't sprout I'll send you more later this winter when the cones dry out more. Just starting to drop now. I'm sending the last group to Mechelle but I'll have more and you're all welcome to them. :)

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Magnolia's are my absolute favorite tree. I LOVE the plate sized flowers. I didn't know it took so long to bloom. That's kind of a bummer but hey, it's worth the wait. Thanks, seray... I really appreciate it. I was saying earlier that I bought 2 a couple months ago and they did great in the window until I planted them. One is still out there but the leaves are brown. I guess I will just leave it and hope it survives, lol. I almost have all my plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers identified. I am going to put them on a spreadsheet and then you guys can all tell me what you'd like. You just can't even imagine all that is here. I have enough to keep me busy for a long time! I go back to school in Sept and I hope to get most of my outside projects finished. Can't wait to share with all of you.. bbl back out to the horses :o)
