Cue is working up the rules and we'll probably start a new thread with all the info. I've asked one of the Brug experts to be our judge. We'll keep you posted. Still have more seeds pass the word around. Here's the list so far:

Arejay
Cue
Mindy

Morning all!

i tried to catch the meteor shower last night, but I didnt see a thing.. maybe one of you were lucky and caught it?

last night, I decided to plant some Brug seeds that Flower was so kind to send me. I was excited as I am just starting out in my brug collecting venture. So, I grab my pack of 'Salmon Perfection' seeds and headed to the kitchen. here are CUE_CHIKS 12 easy steps to starting Brug seeds:

Step 1: Soak seeds to soften cork covering for removal

Step 2: while seeds are soaking, gather pot big enough to hold 6 seed, and soil.

step 3: place spoil in pot, moisten, set aside.

step 4: spend 30 minutes carefully peeling brug seeds.

step 5: soak peeled brug seed in a solution of peroxide and water for 10 minutes to kill any fungus.

step 6: gently place seed on top of soil and press in, but not bury... in a neat little 5 star pattern to ensure spacing between seed.

step 7: pick up pot for placement in sunny windowsill, proceed to drop pot and contents all over kitchen counter.

step 8: curse while attempting to scoop up wet soil, place carefully back in pot. pray all seeds are still in, manage to find 3 of the 6.

step 9: curse some more. place pot n window sill with makeshift 'coke bottle dome'.

step 10: pray the cats dont knock pot off windowsill.

step 11: warn cats of the danger to their lives should they knock the pot off the windowsill.

step 12; curse some more, go to kitchen, clean up wet soil from counter. curse again. grab beer and call it a night.

ad there you have it.

You can eliminate a few steps for quicker results.. like steps 7 - 12.

So begins another day at my house

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

I would take a deep breath and start again if I were you......You could be looking under things for brug seed all day if you hold onto that....

Good Morning All! I have GREAT NEWS!!!!

Joeswife (Debra) from the Brug forum has agreed to be our judge for the Brug sprout off. If you've been on the forum you know she's very skilled with Brugs. She showed me a beautiful pic of B. suaveolens that she has grown. Enjoys a very high germination rate with her own seeds.

So she will be sprouting along with us and encouraging us onward. :)

Thank you for the info Cue! I'll keep my cat away from my seeds LOL

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Yoo hoo that is great Seray!! Yeah...thank You Debra...

Hey you guys, I can't believe I'm here, But was able to go in e-mails and delete them and get on here, now, I guess the next question is, for how long till it freezes again and knocks me off?!? Anyway, for now it's working. Going to the post office now and going to see about my Mom so won't be back until after lunch time. Great getting a good judge for the brugs contest. NOW Cue, don't get those mixed up with the white ones for the contest, you would have a head start on us. -BY the way, I got 2 baby red/yellow brugs sprouted. Hopefully they will get big enough to bloom before winter and I can save seeds for everyone. Well, talk later. (just kidding Cue, I know you wouldn't cheat?!?)

Here is the red/yellow BRUGMANSIA-ANGEL TRUMPET

Glad to see you up and running Mekos. LOL

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

mekos,
That's Brugmansia sanguinea, the scarlet flowered brugmansia. It likes quite cool conditions to flower well so I'm not sure how well it will do for you in SC since you are probably quite hot during the summer. Good luck!

Shepherdsville, KY

I have the same Brugmansia Red Sanguinea. Keep it in the AC it don't like heat. Here is a pic of mine. She is in a sunny window loving the AC.

Hi, everyone!

Well, I'm back in Phoenix feeling like I need a vacation to recover from my vacation - lol. Haven't had too much time to catch up yet as I'm back at work today. Looks like I got elected to participate in something in my absence - lol. It's all good - as long as I know what I have to do! I'll try to catch up and check in later.

cue and mekos - the seeds arrived in my absence.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

ok.. i think it would be a good idea to post a 'free Seed For Newbies BRUGMANSIA Seed Sprout Off!" thread, so that others may enter. we can close it as soon as Seray deems necessary. once it has closed.. I will then open up the Seed Sprout off Thread for the participants... to chat, compare notes.. whatever...

everyone think this is a good idea/

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Also:

i have thought about hosting a thread titled 'Seed of The Month' where the topic will be one seed per month.. we can talk about experiences, growing methods, success rates, zones, colors.. whatever... this might encourage newbies to ask questions and learn from those of us with more experience in sprouting seeds... What do you all think? So... in light if this ... I wuld like everyone to give me a list of what THEY think are the 12 most common flower seeds .. this way, i can get an idea of what to talk about in the thread and how to set it up.

Sounds Great Cue!

We have 9 participants so far. 50 seeds on the way. I think we have all the newbie's who want to play so let's open it up. Is the the summary of your rules? Every participant will be contributing a plant to the winners pot? We'll show our sprouts weekly on the sprout thread. And maybe show our bids before we start to stimulate the competition.

We can close it at 3 seeds each or 5 which ever you want.

Coleus, impatients (sp), daylily, petunias, daisy, mums, caladiums, coneflower, morning glory, canna, cyclamen, roses, :)

I know they're not all seeds but it's been a long day. :)

hrmmm... is up to you... how many seeds each should get.

Wellllllll. How about a compromise. Let's do 4 each. If no one wants to join us then we'll just split what we have. That will give us a dozen participants. Sound ok? I really don't know the germination rate for the seeds.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

HI Everyone Cue sounds good to me so far.
My list of common seeds is
Zinnia, marigold, bachelor button, sweet william, impatiens, geranium, touch me not, verbena, pansy, cockscomb, spider flower, sunfower.
These are the most often seen around here.

Cue got my moon bush today thank you very much.

Indialantic, FL

Hello everyone! My newbie seeds arrived yesterday - my birthday! - now I just have to figure out how to plant and what needs to be soaked first (??) or sprouted like the sprouts you eat (??). Any help out there? I would love to try the brug and the datura, if I'm not too late.

HELP for my compost, please. When I added water yesterday it seemed to wiggle, so I dug in, and found lots of grubs or white ugly things. Have I ruined the compost? I want to try the lasagna bed in my back yard where there is lots of sun and also lots of FL's grass. Does it all have to be layered at
once? I have trouble finding lawn clippings, my lawn guy doesn't leave any. Have lots of pine needles. What about corn husks and corn cobs? Could those white ugly things be maggots, and if
so what do I do about them? Should I just empty the compost onto the lasagna bed? I have it in a kitchen size garbage can lined with a black plastic bag, and it seems to get pretty hot.

My magnolia seeds have dried, and next I put them in the freezer or refrig (??) for how long? It
has been so hot here, they are probably cooked as well as dried. Who wants some? I will be
harvesting them for a while, so more will be available later on.

I'm planning to plant okra seeds soon -- any suggestions? I will grow them in a container. And if
I am successful with the lasagna bed, next spring I may be able to plant corn, or at least some
flowers!!!! The spirit is willing and very interested, but the flesh gets worn out easily.

Thanks for all the seeds!

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Lavender, regular sage, petunias, morning glories, hollyhocks. Thats about all I can think of right now.

You're not too late Duchess. We'll add your name to the Brug sprout contest.

That gives us 10 players. LOL Two more and we're set.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Hey you guys, I finally got on here. Been a long day. I spent the morning with my Mom and the rest of the day with my sister and we both worked on Mom's scrap book. Still not finished, but MAN it is going great! She had ideas I hadn't thought of and we wrrked all afternoon. I just got home and back on here. Got to read now and catch up. Maybe my computer will hold up for a while. We got rain today. Good soaking rain.Sure needed it. Don't forget the auction tonight at 8:00pm.

Glad to see you Mekos. LOL
