All about recycling...My son just called from Rhode Island,he's 32
He says,How are ya Mom?
Feeling better,thanks
He say,are you resting?
No,I tired of resting and reading and taking it easy.I'm cleaning the cupboard where I keep my pots, fertilizers, other good stuff for plants.
He says what kind of 'stuff?
yogurt cups,applesauce cups,plastic containers,
He says, throw all that junk away.
WHAT,that's all good stuff! ^_^
DOESN'T HE KNOW-the roasted chicken container is perfect for starting AV leaves in.
DOESN'T HE KNOW- a yogurt cup and a single serve applesauce cup makes a perfect little self water. Thanks Tish for the idea!
DOESN'T HE KNOW-I don't go out to eat to often but when I go it's to Burger King for breakfast. There sausage and biscuits come in a great container good for a pan pot or seed starting.
DOESN'T HE KNOW- the container of red licorice I bought was really to grow a pink episica in.
DOESN'T HE KNOW- the large size medicine medicine bottle makes a perfect holder for a solo cup to wick a plant in.
DOES'T HE KNOW-the cream cheese contain is perfect for bottom watering.
DOESN'T HE KNOW- the little apple pies you can buy,the tins really makes a nice support to hold up the leaves on AV's like a leaf ring I think there called.Or cut a V in it and set on top of a clear party cup and wick a strep in it.It picks the leaves up off the plant stand nicely
Geez I thought I thought my son everything about recycling, guess not ^_^
Please add your recycling tips for plant growing!
Geez Louise,I thought I taught my son...
Ha! I love it, Jan!
We were at Walmart the other day, and I asked JP to go get some fresh spinach. He came back with this clear container at least a foot long and 6 inches wide full of baby spinach. Yay! I told him how nice that would be to start leaves or plants in and he said, "Yes, that is why I got that one. They had some in a bag, but I knew you'd like this better." He's a keeper! LOL
See, if your son were there with you to see just how handy dandy these items are, he'd never even dream of telling you to throw them away. ^_^
Your hubby's a keeper for sure Amy! Great minds think the same ^_^

dont forget old chopsticks for poking leaf holes, old milk jugs for storing water/fertilizer, or using the kids old paint brushes for dusting leaves. I also don't throw away teacup saucers after the cup breaks, especially the pretty ones, or I pick up loose saucers for very cheap at flea markets. Nothing prettier than a blooming violet with a nice little floral china saucer under it. The little saucers used for the very small tea or expresso cups are great for the mini's!
I like Walmarts veggie/variety tray for leaf starting . . .
I have also used the containers from Taco Bell. Black on bottom and clear on the tops!
Good tips! keep them coming ^_^
Did you know, some times when you buy a gallon of milk, theres still the plastic piece on the handle. That little piece of plastic makes the best darn little digger to use when planting a plant or making holes for leaves.I read about it in a old 70's gessie book.I found 3 in the bottom of the milk section in the grocery store one day and asked the guy who works that dept.if I could have them,he kind of looked at me like I was crazy but said sure, take them.LOL.
You're gonna love this one--actually meant to post it yesterday on another thread, but never got to it. A great container for trailing AV's is Betty Crocker Warm Delights Microwave desserts--mini's for minis, and regular size for Standards/semi-mini's The little plaStic cakepans are perfect.
Phoebe, I have ton's of those!! Needless to say that's why........Let's just say that I am heavy!! LOL!!!
Editied to say: I also go to Ruby Tuesdays and get their little condiment containers Wonderful for those just separated babies!!

I have plenty of those condiment containers in all sizes from working in a restuarant, they are perfect, esp the 1 oz size for the babies.
Thanks Phoebe, I can now justify buying some of those microwave desserts!
Thanks Phoebe, I can now justify buying some of those microwave desserts!
Works for me! That's why I knew people would like it! Ouy! The sacrifices I make for my plants!
Jan, just try not to think of all the wonderful containers he's been throwing away! ha.
In the frozen foods section one day I bought a microwave dinner. The cooking container was so neat, I went back and got a couple more - some of the foods are weird for me, too bad. It is great for trailers as it is about 6" across and not deep, little more shallow than a pan pot. The top piece steams the food ( and now holds a layer of perlite, soil and a trailer av - a little piece of yarn for wicking), it has holes in the bottom. It sets in the bottom piece which holds some water, not a lot, but the plant seems to like them.
I'm a little bad...this evening my 8 yr old grandson wanted these little mini gummy bears at the grocery...I might have said yes anyway, but I couldn't say no to the nice clear hard plastic container with clear lid!
tish
I thought I was the only one buying food for the containers, LOL! What a great thread:)
You guys gave me a idea what to do with the red plastic things that 4 packs of 2 liters soda come in at Costco. They hook 4 big liters together with this red connecting thingy at the top. I have been wondering for several years what to do with those things and I think I can cut open one side and put it under the leaves the AV to hold them up.
Thanks for all the great ideas!
Pat

Jan--my son lives in RI too! Do you ever visit? Cos it is not that far to...TAA-DAA....Logee's!
lillypad--are you referring to the Cafe Steamers frozen dinners? Not only do I like them, (frozen dinners are not at the top of my list---but being single...) but I have three containers in use now with micro-mini's in them!
Great tips people! I've been eying those betty crocker warm delights, wondering how they are.sounds good to me!
Hi Tish,OK fess up girl, what's the name of the microwave dinner?I might need to try a few of them ^_^
I sure is good to know I'm not the only who is always on the look out for containers!
Hi Jan! My son lives on the outskirts of Providence but he's thinking of moving to North Kingston shortly.I haven't been up there in a few years but my son comes down here every couple of years..I would like to go RI this winter or next.I miss the snow ^_^.Time will tell.
Ha! I grew up around Logee's and when I lived in RI.it was only a hour away from you know where. That place will always be my favorite place! Do they still have what they consider 7 greenhouses?
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/623968/
Oh Yeah! the rambling greenhouses are all still there and wonderful in the winter. Makes me want to move south! LOL
Warning,Warning, don't move south.New England people have a hard time getting used to the heat down here.LOL.Nice place to visit but...^_^
Funny . . . northern people want to move south . . . southern people want to go north . . .
My father was in the Navy, we lived in Newport, Portsmouth and Middletown several times during his enlistment. I really loved it there. Wonderful weather all year round, at least for me. I know that this might sound crazy but the cold is different than down here in the south.Did I just say that?? LOL!! I can remember snow so deep you had to shovel to get out of the door. But that was a lifetime ago!! LOL!!
I'll be getting back to you in Feb!!!!! ^_^
Here is the best deal going on small containers. I will go back and find the site. If you order the one I find, they always send you the wrong ones...........two different sizes (just wonderfully small) like condiment containers........when you tell them they sent the wrong ones, they say keep them and we will send the right ones. I have these little opaque pots all over the house and I use them!!
Now I have all three sizes.
I will have to go back and find Goldleaf's old threads. She is the one who told us about this site........
I cannot believe that Dave has such a good search engine.......I found the thread in 60 seconds. Here it is:

Some of you may be interested in getting the Dart550PC plastic cups as they are the same size as a 3" squatty pot at a fraction of the cost. Of course, you will have to make your own holes in the bottom for drainage.
They are offered in lots of 2500 or in lots of 125 ($4.79)...scroll down to see. You can order several of the 125's at the same UPS shipping rate of 11.00 -
The lot of 2500 is waaay cheaper per cup but who needs that many?
[HYPERLINK@www.webstaurantstore.com]
Here is the 3" squatty cup and everything else in different sizes......the smaller ones, too

Thanks Gail! That's the link I was looking for!
I live in the north and want to move further north, wouldn't move to the south for anything. I like the people in the south, but then they are mostly the way they are because they are away from the stress of higher populations - and really, one can find more rural less, populated areas in any direction.
My dream is to live in New England, near the ocean.
Jannich,
It is weird but every time Goldleaf and I order the squatty 3" ones..........they send both smaller sizes. And.........as I said, they then turn around and say, "Just keep them. We will send the right ones".
You must be young jmp!!! After you are 50, your attitude just becomes, "Bloom Where You ARe Planted" because you grown kids are going to make a couple of moves and I don't want to be too far from my grandchildren. (if I don't have to)
I lived in Houston for over 30 years and you couldn't drag me back to that much stress of heavy traffic, impatient people and long work days. One lives in the city to make money but when you lose your big earning capacity, people seem to seek out solitude and quiet.
Gail,if they send you the wrong sizes,do they charge you shipping again?
Newport! I loved going there,I used to live maybe 40 minutes away.We went every summer for the seafood festival and walk on the cliffs..Geez I'm getting home sick.LOL ^_^
Not that young, Gail. I wouldn't even live where I was if it weren't for family... though I could not get far away enough from them when I was younger!
If I moved, for example, north to Cape Cod, I would still be less than 5 hours from home, but I probably won't go that far until my brothers kids are a little older, I don't want to miss their childhoods. As for my son, believe it or not, he lives probably within an hour of you. That's kind of hard...but hey, maybe you can help me out there, you know, stop over a few times a week, make sure he's eating, do his laundry...how would that be? =D
Anyway, I do see how you tend to want to stay in one place as you get older, but considering I have NEVER wanted to live where I am now, that is not going to happen. I am only here in this area till I finish school, the school I wanted to go to is in this area, and the money I need to make is here as well. I wouldn't have been able to afford school otherwise.
Jannich..........no, they didn't charge one single dime for shipping UPS the right ones.................pretty good deal.................
CAn';t believe you have son near me.............tell me where.............Will I be doing his laundry? A big fat no!! (LOL) Oh my gosh that reminds me of when I had 3 kids in high school and college at the same time. I spent my life traveling from New Mexico back to Austin to be sure their needs were taken care of............finally I got so tired of going back and forth that I moved back to Texas!!
Since I moved back in '89 I have never left Texas.............and neither have the kids.
He's just outside of Austin. Loves it there. He works in the computer field, and originally went to the area to work for Dell, now we can't get him to come back.
Austin is, by far, the best city in Texas..............has more good things about it than either Houston, Dallas or any other city in Texas............just beautiful , too..............they even get 4 seasons in Austin.
If any of us could have gotten jobs back in the early 60's after we finished school at UT, we would have all stayed...........I think it is the same way today...............
Wonderful ideas everybody and I loved reading everyone's thoughts about where to live!!
Don't forget cat litter buckets are terrific containers to hold batches of soil, perlite, etc.
Lynn
I am too old to buy the kitty litter in large quantities so I buy them in the gallon containers. The gallon containers are what I go get my Reverse Osmosis water in and then mix half and half with my tap water. (our water supply is very alkaline.........7.9)
Oh, I like that cat litter idea! I can never figure out what to do with them!
Pat
