Well summer is almost over as school here in Tyler starts Aug. 24th
So here I am to see if anyone is interested in a Fall RU in East Texas
it will take place at Love's Lookout
The only days that I know of at present I am unable to be there are
September 19,20
and possibly
October 9 7:00 pm
October 24
As I am a Liaison for the AFS student Exchange program
East Texas Fall Roundup
Dee & I are interested....I know the 29th of Sept is the Cherokee County MG's Plant Sale date, which I'm participating in....the following weekend - Oct 3rd is their rain date for the same......but we can't make that date anyway - previous comittment
What about the 10th or 17th of October?
Yes, let's definitely do another fall roundup! The east texas roundups have been very successful and we should keep it going.
The 10th or 17th of October sounds good to me, too. It'll be cooler by then.
OK then we are picking between the 10th and 17th of October
Might as well flip a coin. :)
guess I should have posted the title of the thread bold to get attention so others would put in their two cents LOL
I am all for a Fall roundup and I do like the Love's Lookout but I was hoping the Fall swap would be at Tyler State Park again. It makes it easier for those in the far north and the Metroplex to make it to at least one swap a year. I believe the Spring swap should always be at Love's Lookout, it is home of the first swap and really great place. Is the site set in concrete or is this up for discussion? Either way I am for a Fall swap wherever it is.
I'd love for it to be in Tyler, too! I've never been to one and I would be very happy to come to the next one. Love's Lookout is a little far for me...
For some reason, we've always had a great showing when we hold it at Love's Lookout. When we did it at the Tyler State Park, it was a very dismal showing. Those that showed up were very good company, but it was a small group...
Whatever ya'll choose is up to ya'll but I think I'd still vote for Love's Lookout. The metroplex folks already have their own roundup... Just my 58 cents (adjusted for inflation)
The 10th or 17th of October sounds good to me, too. It'll be cooler by then.
I agree with those dates and vote for Love's Lookout. It's free and I think a nicer location.
I know where Tyler is, but have no clue where Loves Lookout is. Can someone enlighten me?
Loves Lookout is on 69 just north of Jacksonville
the area is nice and has plenty of shade the spot we have used in the spring is of to the side so we are not in the way of anyone stopping there as a rest stop and is free to use.
where as the state park there is a deposit to for the pavilion and then it is a cost of $3.00 per car to go in
Regardless of where we do it we do need to decide as If we don't use loves lookout then I will have to find a place and see if there is a price to pay to reserve the spot also....along with making sure there is enough parking for everyone.
I know the cost of the rental and the fee to get in last year kept some away on the fall one last year and if you have a time limit it makes it hard to just come for a short time when you have to pay to get in then leave shortly there after for another commitment
am just rambling the thoughts in my head
We will do potluck as usual
and door prizes... to be included in door prizes please make sure you bring one for each person that comes with you so no one gets left out.
AND IF ANYONE WANTS TO DO A FIRST AND DO A LIL TALK OR DEMONSTRATION ON SOMETHING RELATED TO GARDENING DMAIL ME PLEASE
I think the Fall swap will be a smaller group wherever it is held. There's just is not as much excitement in the air about plants after a long hot Summer. I realize the Metroplex has it's own swap but is nice when they cal spill over. Some people combined the swap with other things they could do in the park. We are planing on making the one in Arlington this Fall. I will go to either one but my vote would be Tyler.
A little over a 2 1/2 hr drive to Love's Lookout for us.....Tyler would be another 30 min....obviously we'd prefer Love's Lookout and will vote
that way........it's unfortunate that we all don't live a bit closer together....it would be sooo much better!
I think it would be nice to have the spring RU at Love's lookout and the fall one at Tyler state park. That way everyone would get to have an RU where they prefer. Either way I will be planning to come.
Both places are very nice. How much was the rental? If three dollars keeps someone away then they most likely can't afford the gas to come as it is so high these days. So, they probably wouldn't be coming anyway.
I agree that the turnout in the fall may be much smaller due to the time of the year and not the location.
My vote is for Tyler this time.
Charlene
It looks split between Tyler and Jacksonville.
I nominate Mibus2 to be the final decider, if she's willing to step into that role.
The post has only been up for less than tree days, what's the hurry? I will come to either place and distance has little to do with it. Maggi and I have been as far as Florida, Alabama and Georgia to go to swaps by the several of the nameless Brug org. We have hosted several swaps where people have come from California and Michigan. It's the people that make the swaps not the place or the plants but it is nice seeing something new. Our old group has not had a swapfor two years but we are starting it up again next Spring. Our swaps were for the whole weekend and one year Joan, of Tyler, had eleven women sleeping in her gazebo, sort of a pajama party. It gives us time to really get to know one another. Nadine was part of that group and now we are very close friends. I have been working on her house and this weekend she is coming up for a visit. She is the one that got me hooked on Gingers. By next year I should have enough to donate dozens to the new Jacksonville arboretum and gardens.
I'm not in a hurry. :)
I"m going to with hold my final answer for now and see if we get any more interest in it
I think right now picking a date would be the first thing to do
so which would ya like the 10th or 17th
Not sure how much I will have potted up but will come just to see folks. Obviously the Look out is my vote since it is 5 min. away. The bathrooms are always clean and nice for those of us that need them. Good grills for cooking those dogs or burgers. Easy for me to get there early and reserve Our spot.
Just my thoughts but Tyler was nice too.
D
I like the 17th since north central Tx is leaning towards the 3rd, I believe. It is really hard to do back to back RU's. I have too many friends at both of them to have to pick just one.
Charlene
I hear ya there Char I missed the spring one over there cause of a family wedding
The 17th sounds like a good idea, it would give more people a chance to make it to both.
Josephine.
I had a great time at the lookout but Tyler state park is nice also. October is my choice. It will be great to see all again.
17th is great for us....and we're coming........either place
I lll be there for either date but Im voting for Loves Lookout.. Reason being .. theres no charge for using Loves which should off set the cost of gas for those who have to drive farther..While the cost to go somewhere else wouldnt be a lot when you add the entry fee, pavillion rental on to the cost of the extra gas for those who have to drive farther it does add up for those on limited incomes...just MHO...
Hola yall,
I have been waiting all summer
for a RU.
What is Loves Lookout?
a park, public or privat land?
How do the facilities compare?
grill? electruical outlets?
handicap access? bathrooms?
Ease in locating for out of
towners? accptance of pets? etc...
Hope you will do it on the 17th
so we can RU hop if we wanna.
Looking forward to meeting
all you lovely people
Hugs, BajaBlue
Actually as far as handicapped facilities Love's lookout is accessible. There would be some difficulty at the Tyler state park at least where we were the last time.
The restrooms are closer at love's lookout also.
Pets are okay on leashes at either location.
Either place is easy enough to locate.
I don't believe that there are outlets at either location.
Love's lookout has the best all around facilities, but in fairness to everyone it would be nice to have it at one location one time and the other the next time. That way everyone would get their choice spot. The travel distance may be closer for some at either location and that could make the difference.
If there are only 25 people and it costs $100. to rent the pavillion, and $3.00 to get in per car then it would only be a total cost of $7. per family. That's the cost of two - three gallons of gas. So, I am not sure how much difference it could make in one's decision as to attending. One, could chose to not participate in the gift exchange and that would make the difference up.
So there you have it!! LOL
Either way I'm happy and either way I plan to attend.
Charlene
I forgot that the dedication to the new Arboretum and Master Gardener garden will be in mid- Oct. I will check and get back with you. I think it is the 17th. This will involve several of the members.
D
The question I need answered is the date so which would ya like the 10th or 17th
so far I see 3 for the 17th
but to answer BajaBlue
Loves Lookout is kinda a rest stop visitor center on 69 going south from Tyler before you get into Jacksonville
so it is public,
the rest rooms are clean and close by
unlike the state park where it is a walk to get to them
Loves Lookout is Free
State Park
fee to reserve pavilion plus $3 charge to enter park no matter how long or short you stay
Loves has a nice Texas shaped grill for cooking hot dogs and burgers on and several nice picnic tables under it
it is on flat ground with a sidewalk that takes you to the pavilion
The state park there is no side walk and to get to the pavilion you have to walk up a small incline
Here is a link to info on Loves Lookout

Both Tyler and Jacksonville have hotels/motels for anyone that is coming a long distance and can not make the drive to and from in one day
Phyllis, why not check as to what date the activities are for the MG's and then get with Josephine or Shelia (since they set the date for the NT RU) and co-ordinate accordingly?
That way most of the people who attend both of the RU's would be able to come without having back to back weekends at RU's. Also then most of the MG's would be able to come and then you could put the dates out there to see if it works.
Sounds simple, but I am sure it is not that easy. LOL
Charlene
I am watching the other posts as to what dates are being looked at for RU's
we not only have the one in Arlington (they are talking the end of Sept or the 3rd of Oct.) to take into consideration but also the one for College station (undecided yet) as I know people from other areas travel to them also...as do I if possible.... but also understand the desire not to have them back to back either as it does cause alot of confusion and is hard to get everything together 2 weekends in a row .
You are right Phyllis, it can get hectic, but fun anyway.
Either place is nice, although Tyler State is closer to me. However I will only be able to come on the 10th. The Texas Gourd Society's Fall shindig in Fredricksburg is the week-end of the 17th.
Just been advised of a work schedule change....looks like the 10th Oct would be a better date now......but such is life.....whenever - where ever....we will try to attend!!
David thinks the master gardener garden dedication is on October 17th. Once he confirms that this is the case, let's agree to do the roundup on the 10th.
I checked with folks and the Arboretum dedication is on Monday Oct. 19.
I would lke to vote for Loves
Lookout then.
With a grill at Lovers will be able
to heat up enchladas wink wink
Plus sounds cheaper and more accessible
and convenient for those who need it.
And as fo distance, you will neve be able to please us all!
BUt the travel wil be worth it IMHO!
Pls scuse any tyos and misspells for those who dont know, not complaininh, cuz I am blessed but I am blind and make many typos and such.
Hugs BajitaBlue
Oh! Bless you. I think you do very well.
