Trying to identify small brown house bug

New York, NY

OK - so it isn't technically in a garden but I'm hoping this forum can help. About a month ago I started seeing these small brown bugs sporadically on or around my bed, usually at night and often when I was playing with my iPod. They seem to fly, be attracted to light and water (I left a cup of water out for a couple of days and it attracted about 10 of them), and I can't figure out where in the apartment they are coming from.

We are in midtown NYC.

Any ideas what these little buggies are and how we can shoo them away?

Other than stating the obvious, that these are small, brown beetles, not much more can be said. The only beetles of this general size, shape, and color that would be of concern would be pantry pests in the family Anobiidae, drugstore and cigarette beetles - see http://tinyurl.com/l4yjxw

These are probably Red Flour beetles which feed on grain, flour, crackers and cereals most often. Do you find these dead near lights in your rooms? When I had these, they would congregate at my lamps, and my computer monitor when it got dark outside. I found that they had bored holes into still sealed plastic bags containing ramen noodles, rice, beans and peas. What you need to do is check all of your storage areas and see if they have invaded any stored grain products. Good Luck!
