Is that you HERRRR-B?

Christchurch, New Zealand

I am thinking of trying to grow a couple of cuttings from the lemon thyme in pots...
I can try different locations that way & maybe getting a trim to take cuttings will make it bush up a bit.
when you compare it with the silver thyme in that garden it looks terrible.
Mind you the last lot of cuttings I took from it rotted...
I did cut that silver thyme back hard in autumn because it was getting leggy.
It is such a nice colour, silvery from a distance but up close you can see it is variegated.
Most cuttings I took from that have struck & are thriving

I am doing a bunch of cuttings in the GPS5...

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1029096/

Just added daylily cuttings there and the chocolatemint...

Have to get on out there and do some work to start the next project...that reminds me, must gooooo water!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Back from watering. Is anyone raising herbs in the kitchen?

Im starting to bring plants in from outdoors. Just brought my sages in.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Then I discovered my tansy was blooming! Its yellow... hmmm is there any other color they come in???

I think my variagated ginger mint either croaked or went dormant.. does anyone know before I toss it out? It looks rather terribble and very dead. Its a first timer for me...

Does garlic constitute as an herb? I dont know if it does for sure, but I think I am gonna try and grow some. Now is the time to plant it.

I just got some planting instructions from a friend on the, They say take the individual cloves and seperate them.

You need to have a sunny location that is of rich soil and well drained....

plant the cloves, rooted side down in holes 1-2 inches deep and plant each clove about 4 to 6 inches away from each other and space the rows about 1.5 to 2 feet apart.

Next cover with fine soil....they recommended 4-6 inches of mulch in the northern cold climates

The garlic will grow in late fall or early spring and by June should produce a new crop. You can dig the garlic out once the leaves have started to wither.

And then brush off the dirt when the garlic is dug out. Store in a dry place. Do not wash the garlic after digging, just brush the dirt away.

Well that sounds simple enough... now all I have to do is run out and get some garlic!

Christchurch, New Zealand

garlic is great!
I grew heaps of it & made garlic plaits - it stores nicely hanging like that.
I just bought Catnip, Golden Sage & Lemon thyme

I have seen a lot of dazzling cute purpel plants this fall. Little tiny ornamental peppers for one. Boy those are soooo complimentary with the lime green foliage eh!?

Well, I am going to try to start some garlic. I dont use it much at all, but can alwasy finds some other soul to share it with!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, anyway, that sounds like a plan.

Heres my tansy again.. seems I am having issues on closeups.. gotta work on my pace better.. owell..

Got some garlic...I wonder if this stuff would grow in a container? I think I might try some that way. Put it in a nursery can and just leave it outside for the winter.

Well, 86-ed the nursery can idea for the garlic and found an old tire that I am going to fill with dirt and use it sortof as a raised planter for my garlic. Should get plenty of cloves in there to have plenty of bulbs next year. We shall see how this pans out.

Need to bring in a few herbs. Looks like my chocolate mint starters have rooted and they could come indoors now. That should add a lovely aroma to the home.

Christchurch, New Zealand

I will have to look out for chocolate mint...
sounds delicious

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Heres the garlic tire.. just put some dirt in it. Need to soak it good to get the mud pudding to fill the tire level. For speacial touch, the lil tire garden has the beauty ring off our old truck.. now is this getting "redneck" or what?

Eeks, looks like we will have to patch the wall to the shed...! Now thats.. hmm looking tooo toooo redneck. Oh wheres Blue eyes when I need him!

Dalfyre, the chocolate mints aroma is scrumptous! I made some new starters and hopefully I will get them through the winter. The big basket is still outside...hmmm.. there goes another one I should try to bring in.

I love the colour of this Golden Marjoram, there is Hot & Spicy Oreganum further along as well.

Thaat is beautiful dalfyre! What do you do with those? are they just ornamentals?

Pardon my mess, but I am in the process of planting. Now what did I do with those cloves?

Christchurch, New Zealand

can be used as you would normal marjoram but I tend to leave it as an ornamental.
The Hot & Spicy Oreganum is well named & a culinary herb.

It is very pretty.

Got my tire tidied up and planted the chives today. Ther should be more than enough to share next season if this works for me!

Brought all the herbs I am gonna bring into the house now. There is 2 pots of chives and several chocolate mint. Maybe I will try to plant some basil after Christmas.

Christchurch, New Zealand

I am looking at the basil for sale at the Warehouse...
there is still a risk of late frost here but I can tuck them in by the tomatoes in my 'greenhouse' until it warms up properly.
I tried growing basil once & it all died, any hints?
What works for you ^_^

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

I have gotten plants of basil before...usually get them in the spring...next year I am gonna try some seed. No hints that I know of....I really have not done too many so I am kindof green at them myself!

Christchurch, New Zealand

well I will go ahead & buy some seedlings & see what happens...
Maybe I had sickly plants last time.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well rats and a half... my tricolor sage and its cutting died. I wonder if it just went dormant or if this is really the end? I brought them into the house and they are my first casualty for the houseplants so far...

Anyone got a clue? I thought the thing was a perenial, but I am not sure.

Christchurch, New Zealand

my herbs are coming along

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

ooooh dalfyre....oh sooooo jealous! Beautiful beautiful beautiful!

So I guess I need to look up sages to see if they go dormant before I make the error of tossing the tri out to the compost.....well, plant search here I come.

My varigated sage and regular sage is still going ok...

Then its back to the GPS6

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Been on the search, could not find a tri-color sage thread in the herb forum so created one...hoping to see what gives!

My other sages don't go dormant...but we don't have the kind of winter you get!
I thought I had lost my garlic chives & tossed the soil form their pot onto the garden, imagine my delight to see the chives coming up once spring was here.
I have them transplanted to the herb garden & hopefully they will like it there as much as the regular chives do.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

So you think the tri is dormant? I am hoping so.. I hate to chuck it out if its not dead!

That reminds me, I have one more tire to plant with garlic and they are talking snow flying already.. UGH!

Christchurch, New Zealand

I'd leave it in a corner just to wait & see...
you can always chuck it if nothing happens in spring

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

I put it in the GH.. its gonna go through the chill of winter here and really soon sine they are talking snow already.. ugh, but what the heck... we shall see.

I best go plant the garlic tire this AM.

Christchurch, New Zealand

brrrr- wrap yourself up warm too, don't be so busy tucking plants in safely that you catch cold!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks!

Have not had a cold in a very very long time! Nearly 8 years... I run in barefeet where some people are putting on sweatshirts! LOL! Why just the other day I was a mowing in my sandles! LOL! Had a sweatshirt on.. but bare feet!

Last year did not turn my full heat on in the house until the middle of December....I doubt this year I will go that long, but depends! We are a little colder now earlier than last year. By then most people up here had spent their first allotment of lp. I did not load my first until then.
Now thats what we call WAAAY DOWN, in the fall!

So whats next on the herb line here?

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

My green sage appears to be having a setback.. I wonder if it is gonna go dormant too?

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Ok, I think I killed the chives....or have they too gone dormant!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Found some wild chives up on the prairie growing great guns up there! WHohooo! So I will not be chiveless after all.

Ok, was scronging through my seed. Found some sweet basil... do I dare sow it now? I am not sure if I can handle another houseplant...
Is anyone doing it? How are your plants doing this time of year?

Christchurch, New Zealand

chives do go dormant so don't give up on them...
I had a miraculous come back from 'dead' chives I tossed onto the woodland garden when I emptied the pot they were in.
I have transplanted them into the herb garden now & will know better next time.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, one by one my pots of this and that are going dormant or dead! LOL!

I noticed my outdoor garlic starting do come...Its not supposed to be diggable until next year. Surely it will winter kill and then come back later again? I never tried garlic before!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

I dug some new chives to take to the house. So Ima thinking to take the ones in the house out to the greenhouse now for winter storage maybe in a few weeks.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Yup, one of the house chives definetly went dormant. I booted it out to the GPS..

Heres the wild thing I dug up the other day... It does not get the purple ball flowers like the domestics...

Cant wait to taste it!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Looks like my 2 other house sages are going dormant too... well they did not last long.. Tomorrow its out to the GPS for them.

Almost forgot.. the garlic I planted in the tire, its coming up....got a few small weeds... willpluck them ASAP!
