What expressions (or words) drive you nuts?? - Part 3

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ugh! At least it says 'nonstandard'!

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

I guess if people say the wrong word enough times it is considered standard English. What is the old expression? "Just 'cuz someone does something doesn't mean it's right"?? I always heard that from my mom when I wanted to do something and she wouldn't let me, and I'd say "So-and-so does it all the time!"

I guess it's the same with words.

Well, no one will ever hear "gifted" as a verb come out of my mouth!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nor mine. (Or any other part of me!)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I'm not persnickety about 'gifted'. You can say it any way you want as long as I get presents. ps my 6 month birthday is only 8 days away (hint, hint).

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll gift you a dictionary! ^_^

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks very muchly Victor but I'm writing my own ^_^

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

South Hamilton, MA

There--vosser has used it as an adjitive as it should be. All clap.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Clap, clap, clap!

If "gifted" means "was given as a present on a special occasion" AND "has unusual talents," then you could say "the gifted soprano gifted her audience with a Mozart aria as an encore." IT STOPS MAKING SENSE! (Joining Emily and whoever else is still up on the soap box.)

Abbrevations have gone wild. SUV, MOP, POS, good grief write an abbrevated dictionary.

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

I agree with abbreviations running amuck! In my office, it wouldn't be uncommon to read a sentence like "FYI, it is the AGPA's job to review the EE's EOC and compare it with the EOB to make sure there were no GSVs in the STD case and then report the findings to the SSM or, if need be, CAT II the case."

South Hamilton, MA

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I played a joke once on a buddy in the legal department and sent him a memo filled with acronyms as a joke. He took it seriously :O Good thing I called him the next day about it. It would have made for an interesting legal opinion though (snort).

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)
