Does anyone know what sp. IML 1480 is? Is there a listing somewhere?

(Zone 1)

boojum: I just looked through the 2009 DL catalog and don't find and IML 1480 ... could it have been from an earlier catalog? I've got last years somewhere, will look through it too.

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

It wasn't in the 2007 catalog. I had that one.

I have the 2008 catalog somewhere but must shut the computer down because of thunderstorms! Will look for it and get on my laptop but I bet someone comes along with the answer for you before I can even find it! ^_^

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Hope so, I've had this one for 2 years. No blooms so I can't ID it.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Doug, that is a great looking H. hellwigiana plant you got there.

Joni...love the excavata !!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

sp. IML 1480 is "H. verticillata (parasitica)' from Thailand.

(Zone 1)

boojum: See, I knew someone would come along and know that one. Thanks Carol! I never found my hard copy of the 2008 catalog and couldn't find it on my laptop either so wouldn't have been any help anyway!

I like that pretty pink bloom of excavata too Joni ... very nice!

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

Very pretty Hoya excavata.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

My very first blossoms of DS70. I have had this plant for 3 years and through my own fault they have finally begun to bloom this summer. I had it in a north window, with lots of light, but no direct sun. When I was complaining of no blooms , a friend said "move it". I did, to a southeast exposure, and away it went. Turned the leaves a lovely red shade as well, and tons on new growth. Along with the growth came many flowers. Wish I would have done that a long time ago.

Hoya kentiana....unreflexed.

Don, Congrats on the first blooms of your DS-70. What do you think of the fragrance? When my first DS-70 bloomed I didn't like it at all, the plant was inside and the scent was very strong. Now the plant stays outside year round and the fragrance in the evening is nice.

ric: Great shot of unreflexed kentiana bloom! Don't you just love kentiana? It's one of my favorites, because it blooms all the time.

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

I have detected very little scent to my DS70 blossoms, Plantladylin. I'll try and remember to take a sniff this evening to see if it's stonger then.

(Zone 1)

Don, the scent is much more noticeable in the evening and after dusk. When mine bloomed for the first time I didn't like it at all, kinda smelled musty to me. Winter before last I moved it into a small bathroom and the scent was very overpowering. Now, it hangs out on the pool deck and the fragrance is nice in the evenings. Last winter we had some very cold weather and even a couple of freezes so my hoyas and orchids came inside for a few weeks but it wasn't blooming then or I'm afraid I would have had to put it in the garage!

My big day...H. kanyukamariana...first time. I am growing it in pure Hydroton/perlite/black cinders...seems to be really happy!!!

Carol, do you always use the hydroton , be it mixed or on its own, semi hydroponically, or do you use it mixed as above and water from the top, as you would with a normal pot of medium? Hope that makes sense, confused myself writing it....!!

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Hoya finlaysonii

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Dom....I have been using it both ways... Very versatile medium... Mixed as above it is used semihydroponically and I water from the bottom... Mixed wth bark I water from the top....

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Beautiful flower Ric! Carol, nice photo of H. kanyukamariana. I love that little plant, a slow grower, but well worth the time.

Nice photo Ric, but are you sure it's finlaysonii?? To me, your hoya looks like verticillata...

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Christina,
I was suspicious and still am....the leaf is SO finlaysonii but the flowers are different looking then any other finlaysonii I have. They only last a couple of days, which is typical of a finlaysonii. Here is a leaf of it.

Beautiful!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Limoniaca is one of the best hoyas!!! It blooms often, has a great fragrance, is EASY and grows well.

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

My Hoya limoniaca has buds and if they manage to open, I hope they look half as amazing as that photo Ric. Wow!

Doug

They do look lovely Ric. Are they as yellow as they appear in the picture? The flowers on my limoniaca are more of a light beige or bone/cream colour. Of course the colour of hoya flowers can vary depending on the geographical area, I'm just wondering if that's the case here.

Christine

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

THANK YOU ALL! Carol is my first time blooming this one and I agree its an easy and attractive plant. Had no idea what it was. I got it as a noid at some plant sale, so I was pleasantly surpriced. ......Christine, I took the picuture inside the house at night and it does give the flower a warmer yellow then it actually is when its outside in natural light. The flowers are a creamy bony yellow like you mentioned. ......And Doug.....I'm sure your blooms will look fantastic. You'll be pleased.....Post pics!

PS. I actually picked the bloom off the plant and took it in the house and placed it on a black surface. I think the contrast of a dark surface and a light colored flower always make a good composition. Although, It might throw off the actual flower color a bit.

Sometimes you need to lay on your back to get a real appreciation for how beautiful these plants can be.

Here is a carnosa, that is free for the taking, must pick up - too big, and takes up too much room to keep any more.

Lovely Doug, especially the brevialata

Dominic

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Awesome pics Doug!

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Just checked and my brevialata has 2 blooms! We're in synch. I need a large carnosa like a hole in the head, but I was tempted! My monster has never bloomed.

(Zone 1)

Doug, that is a wonderful shot of brevialata! Now, I bet many of us are going to be laying on our backs with camera in hand, looking up at our plants to take pictures from a different view! Now, if you hear a faint voice yelling "Help, I can't get up!" ... it's probably me. ^_^

What a lovely carnosa! If I lived closer I'd definitely take that beauty off your hands!
