Ah the joy of having kids is you get to let them do the things you hate to do once they get big enough. Mom had 14 so she had life pretty easy once they started getting big enough to help her Her only problem was the boys wouldn't stay home long enough to get anything out of them so us girls had to learn all that boy stuff LOL

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

lol, I onkly have the 1 boy. Thankfully, I get help out of him when i need it ( i gotta push, but it gets done), now his father isnt so lucky...lol. when he is there for the summer, his father will complain that he cant get him to do anything... my reply is 'See, you dont give him a choice, you dont ask, you dont beg and plead..."... cuz here, its not a matter of if he WANTS to help... i dont give him the choice but to...LOL.

then i give him the lecture of 'Your responsibilities as part of this family".. and that everyone has a part to play.. yada yada... it usually works, if for no reason than he just doesnt wanna here the lecture again and gets it done...LOL

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

LOL Mom's response to don't want to was either do it or I bust your butt for you and she followed up too

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

yeah, ive had to issue that ultimatum a time or two as well...LOL, by no means is my son all willing to help at all times.. he's a kid, it's their job to procrastinate it seems, but all i do is light that fire... and he's off...LOL

also helps to pull the power chords to the video games, tv and stereo... and threaten never to return them. i leave the appliances in his room, so he can stare at their useless shells longingly, knowing he cant do a darn thing without their power cords...ROTFL.. that usually works, when it doesnt, I then declare the 'beatings will begin shortly, should i return and you havent begun the task I have given you!'... THAT never fails to properly motivate him...ROTFLMAO

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

LOL Cue you sound alot like my mom only she skipped the taking away stuff when she could still catch us to spank. My oldest brother at 16 thought he was beyond her reach and sassed her. Unfortunately for him she had just poured a hot cup of coffee which was used to let him know she was still able to do him bodily harm. Coffee in the face isn't fun and he never sassed her again or ever raised his voice as long as she had a cup in her hadns LOL. Though since she followed through when she threatened the spankings she didn't get much resistance once she voiced the threat because we knew we would get exactly what she threatened even if it took her until we were sound asleep before she caught us.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

yup, consistency is the key. you can threated until you are blue int he face, but if you dont follow thru, it means nothing.

My son has this habit of covering his backside with his hands, but has learned since, that i will reach out and strike whatever skin is available, be it arms, legs, thighs... good thing he is a fast learner...LOL.

Rarely do i have to spank, he usually will get done what needs be when i say it the first time, but if I have to say it a second... he knows what will come next, because there is no third request.

Hey you guys, I just found the new thread. SNEAKY, aren't you? Thought you were hid from me??? Well, I found ya. (taking a bow, I mastered that deed.)
Well, I have a Moon Bush with a pod opening on it even as we speak. It will open tonight. And it looks like it will be big. My first bloom ever. My first plant, ever. I grew it from seed, too.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

oh MEKOS!!! i am soooo darn glad you posted that1 i received unidentified seed in my newbie pack a few months ago.. i sprouted them.. and that is exactly what it looks like right now!!!! the same exact plant!!! only, they havent opened yet, but look as if they will any day! i was gonna take a pick to have it identified, but now that you posted that pic, I dont have to!!!

MOON BUSH. It's a little like the moon vine, which mine didn't sprout, but it will open at night and I was told it would stay open longer than the moon vine. The bloom gets as big as a dinnerplate. The moon vine bloom gets as big as a saucer, but only opens at night and closes the next morning.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

cant find it in plantifles tho.. does it have another name?

at first, when i saw how large the bloom pods were, i thought it might be some sort of squash, but it looks identical tot he one you have and is covered in unopened blloms1 i cant wait to see them open. do they come in different colros? are they annuals or perrenial?

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

its......

TRUE BLOOD NIGHT!!!!!!!! so ya'll know what that means. from 9pm - 10 pm.. I... dont...exist!!!! ROTFL

The moon bush is only white and you will be ok, you are in Florida. It should come back for you. I'll have to save seeds for next year. I'm in zone 7. I'll find the real name for you if nobody else chimes in with it. I don't know off hand.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Is it a Datura?

No, I don't think so, Genny from cowboyslady sent them to me, she will know. I'll find out in a few minutes after the bid thingy is over.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

ok, i have a...dilemma.

I received a small pack of seeds in my newbie pack labeled 'painted daisy'

well, I sprouted them, planted them.. now the dern things are 3 FT tall, with no sign of a bloom and still growing. the foliage resembles NOTHING of the pics of painted daisy i have seen. the stalks are about 1/2 - 3/4 inch in diameter and the foliage is a bright green with a hint of red toward the stem, where the leaf begins. I will try and take pics tomorrow, but does anyone have an idea what it could be? a mis labeled sunflower perhaps?

Hey Cue, Maybe it's the red sunflower you wanted. Couldn't have come from me.

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Sounds like a sunflower to me but I haven't a clue what kind it might be.

GOOD NIGHT all. Great Day, today. MAN, what a start for the auction! Cue, remember the black hollyhock seeds I had sent to you a while back? This is the lady they came from. She just became a paid member and made a bid. She really wants those green bat flower seeds.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Morning gang1 having my morning cupp. three day weekend is over.. back to the 'nuttin special'

did manage to get all my black flower seeds that were sent to me by some of you, into their 'milk jug' seed starters this weekend.

Finally broke down and moved the night Blooming jasmine shrub from the Goth Garden area, to the front flower bed, just at the corner of the house. i think it will look better and do better there and now that gives me a completely clean slate to work with in the Goth Garden. Also finished and planted the lasagna garden bed. a few things may not make it in this heat, but others might... its all trial and error for me right now. if anything, come spring, i'll have a wonderful rich bed to plant more flowers :)

Spent most of my weekend outdoors, getting some things taken care of while i had the time. lost my 'glow in the dark complexion tho... developed into a nice rosy pink... was hotter than [ insert mythical realm of eternal torment of your choice here] and humid as a rainforest, BUT, all thats left is my goth garden, and as soon as seeds are big enough to transplant, I'll be filling it in with all sorts of beautiful black flowers.
made and executive decision NOT to include a reflection pond in the goth garden, at least not at this time, as it is proving to be quite a chore to empty and refill on a daily basis to avoid breeding mosquitos. however, the Angel is still in the plans... woot!

But for now, my garden party is over, as it's time to get back in the routine of work and chores. YUCK. I was having sucha great time in my garden. i cant wait to retire (let's see.. another 30 years yet to go) so i can putz around my flowers on a daily basis.

hope everyone had a great weekend! will see you all later this evening.

Have a good day Cue. You acomplished a lot last week and you take 2 bows for that. You did good. You are an inspiration.

Shepherdsville, KY

Sherri,
What are you doing up there?

Looks like washing windows, but I didn't know that was involved in making lasagna beds. Hope she didn't fall. Hi everyone. Too hot today. In the 90's here and steamy 90's at that. Got all the auction seeds mailed off today so be sure to let me know when they come. Great start on the new auction. The newbies raised a lot of seeds for arejay to count and pack. Got a new newbie, Hollyhock. Welcome to the seed trading thread. Good gardening.
Hi everyone. (Thanks anonymous donationer for the grow bag and coupon for the auction). BIG success.

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Sherri
It is not a good idea to put the lasagna bed on the roof....really come down and plant it on the ground Sherri

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

oook, Im not 100% sure.. but I'm pretty darn close to sure that in none of my research, was there ever a mention of a ladder as part of the lasagna bed process... i could be wrong.. and if i am, then i have apparently left out a very important step and my efforts will have been for naught...however...

and Welcome Holly.. and yes, i am all too familiar with Black Pearl... intimately familiar, painfully so

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

Holly,
Are you lasagna gardening on the roof too?

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

HI you all. Well Sherri I've looked and looked at that picture and have come to the conclusion that you are making the lasagna bed where the ladder stands and thought you would clean windows before you went any furhter. Or maybe you are showing us the embellishment you mean to add to it??? I can't remember a ladder in the lasagna bed making instructions but perhaps you plan to grow a vine up the ladder?
Oh well, guess I'll wait and see but I do know there won't be a ladder anywhere near mine cause there's nothing to lean one against and DJ would knock the free standing one down.
I've started digging on mine but it's going slow that clay is awful which is why it's getting the lasagna treatment to start with. Don't worry Mekos those logs aren't heavy and I just need to roll them over one turn or two to get to the weeds near them. As for the digging after doing my big flower bed I'm in pretty good shape. And smart enoguh to stop when my body says I better or else.

Hi Everyone

Running a little late with spring cleaning. LOL Had to do the windows. Didn't want that ladder on my hostas. Plus it's nice to be able to see what I plant. Plus I live in GA and my neighbors would say: "Those hostas sure were pretty but Bless Her Heart you'd think she'd a washed her windows first."

And here we thought you got stuck on the roof. Well.

Indialantic, FL

Are-jay, did you ever get the "Bower" envelope from the PO, and how much postage was due? Shall I send you more stamps? I'm going to grow things -- veggies, I hope -- in containers. Can I plant beans and tomatoes now? What about zucchini? How about onions, okra, and sweet potatoes?

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

yes Duchess I did dont worry about the postage. My computer went down and I forgot to tell you. Now the Florida gardening questions...Girls Florida girls.....can you help here?

Morning All

Hope you have a great day. My garden woke me up with some color this morning. I thought I'd share a few photos before I'm off to work.

Sherri, Those are just lovely. WOW, what beauties. I'd love to live in your back yard and see this every morning when I woke up. Great going.

Mekos keeps us pumped up with her seed auctions, Al takes us on virtual plane rides and cooks us virtual steaks, Arejay has the daunting task of keeping us out of trouble and teaches us latin with word scrambles. Join us regularly and we guarantee to entertain and confuse. LOL

Sherri

MOSTLY confuse, but we'll all be confused together and it's so much more fun when everyone is either all confused or all in trouble together. LOL Welcome ART. Good to have you here. Don't disappear on us now. We seem to lose twins sometimes, don't want to lose you. Ask questions if there is anything you need to know and someone should be able to help you.
