Our dial up people need a new thread as the last one had over 130 posts.........
I saw this bloom today on a hoya mixed in with Hoya kerri in the same basket. I thought she was just an old carnosa (and she may well be). The red has taken me by surprise.
July OT 2nd Thread
Wow, Gail, what a beautiful red! Could be a pubicalyx, though. Do you have a foliage picture, maybe one showing several leaves? I am not an expert, but I have several solid green carnosas and a few pubicalyx, I could possibly guess.
Okay..........I will go outside right now and take pictures of her foliage........I love hoyas but know zip.... nada... about their names...............
Viostrep sent me the publicalyx 'Red Button's.........I know the foliage is not like hers that is rooting right now........let me go compare.......
Do you think these two pictures foliage wise look alike..........remember my basket is old so the leaves are fatter but they look like they might have the same look........???
The first one is of Connie's rooting.............
Won't I be embarrassed when I have to tell Connie that the Hoya I literally asked her for is one I already have??????????
it is hard to tell carnosa and pubicalyx apart, they are very similar. some types of pubicalyx tend to have longer and narrower leaves, though. The problem is, that one plant can have different sized leaves. I can't really tell from your photos.
I am not positive, but maybe a carnosa could get that red in color, is it in alot of sun? Do you remember where you got it? Is the new foliage green or a reddish bronze color? I will have to ask around about how dark carnosa flower colors can get, I know a few hoya people. Environment also affects the flower color. All I can tell you for sure is that what you have is either a pubicalyx of some type or a carnosa! Sorry I can't do better/
As for feeling silly asking or trading for a plant you already have, I happen to have I think 4 different types of solid green carnosa, and each one is different, even though they are all technically the same variety. I like them all, and they really are the fastest growers and best bloomers. If someone had another to offer, I'd probably take it!
I am going to start working on building up my hoyas again.......after a weak moment of selling them on ebay I know the nursery where my plant came from so am anxious to get back there and restock..........
If you want any of these cuttings from the red bloomed one I just posted, holler at me........would love to share..............the bloom is mighty 'purty'.............
I was wondering, is it as red as it looks in the photo or is it more of a dark pink?
Maybe we will do some trading when I get that Gulghs Xmas AV leaf or baby plant to you in the early fall. I have "a few" hoyas.
Yes, it is truly a red...............not as deep of a red as Hoya imperialis but almost.........
Then it may not be pubicalyx, I think those are just deep pink shades. I'll see what I can find out.
Here is something I found online, called H carnosa red - good foliage pics, maybe you could compare to yours?

you didn't link me to it, jmp...........would love to see H carnosa red......may google for it.
sorry, link is up there now!
thanks ladies!!! will go right now.........
***that is she!!!! She has been grown on the front porch with no direct light so that maybe why she is this red (or dark dark pink).........thanks so much and will be happy to share..........if you don't make me go to town in this heat right now......smiling......

well, I find that with my one older carnosa, the MORE sun, the darker the flowers. With less sun, the flowers are very pale. This is not the case with all of my carnosas, though, some of them stay the same color regardless of how much light.
The leaves on the plant in the picture are very distinctive. I'd love a cutting of it, maybe in the early fall?
Fall is most definitely the best time for me........we have just never experienced this kind of heat in my life time with no rain at all. My grandchildren are coming down in August and I am panicked about what they are going to do. They usually like to ride the gator and the giant highway size lawn mower........anything with an engine, but it is too dangerous right now. With these big 12" cracks in the pastures and around here, they could turn them over so easily.
I can't sound pessimistic over this 100 year drought in Texas. Tonight we have our first chance (50% chance of 'isolated' thunderstorms).
Plus I will have a chance to go back to that nursery where I buy hoya obscura in baskets and all kinds of good hoyas.
Fall is better for me too. It has been pretty hot here this week, though not as hot as usual for this time of year. Mornings and evenings have been downright chilly, which is odd.
Hope you get some rain soon, and some real rain, not just thunderstorms!
Oh......we will get down on our knees and praise God if we could only get a good thunderstorm...........anything is a blessing.
I just talked (emailed) a friend in Idaho who is too busy working right now but will always come back to DG after November. She said it was even 32 degrees one morning and the whole summer has been cooler than usual..........(zone envy again)
well, did it rain?
Not a drop even though we listened to thunder for hours.............
awesome pictures, Imadigger!!! I have a 'Pink Silver' and her blooms do look a lot like the one I showed but the leaves are lighter on the Pink Silver.
I never kept my lobbi long enough to let her bloom..........wowser!
Hoya pachyclada is one beauty of a flower!!!
Thanks for posting.
Such pretty flowers, Ima! I like pachyclada too - but for some reason it reminds me of teeth.
I love those little buttons!!

Thanks for the info phoebe! I love scented geraniums
great shot. what kind of camera do you have? I'm too tired to go searching the back messages to see if you posted it before. Just got finished at 'farm town'. there's a glich today. had to do all the work myself. LOL
Eileen--it's a Cannon Power Shot A590 and I used the macro setting. I just couldn't get close enough for a true macro shot. That butterfly was so much more gorgeous than it appears in the photo. Plus the wind was blowing pretty hard, so nature was working against me today. And....we are supposed to get yet another 2-4 inches of rain tonight. I think Mother Nature is PMS-ing! It was Syru that helped me pick out this camera--I was having a devil of a time choosing when I bought it last year. I'd better check on my farm--I already lost one crop this week d/t glitches.
This is that butterfly getting ready for take-off cos the silly violet lady was harassing him!
Karen, I love Ping. cyclosecta! I had it, but killed it over this past winter. It has gorgeous color!
Gail, I haven't read every single post, but wanted to show you the buds on my Hoya pubicalyx 'Red Buttons'. I think they are so pretty even before they open! I'm hoping they'll open today or tomorrow, though.
