Hi...how do I get in touch with gessiegail? Newbie here...love your AV's!

Join us, bbon, in our fun of growing all kinds of gesneriads. I posted streptocarpus which is a relative of the African Violet.

If you look at the 'stickys' at the top of each forum , you will find a wealth of information on these plants.

http://www.streptocarpus-info.com/
all about streps, episcias, sinningias and some others.............on the left you can read......on the right you can look at streps and see what you like

These are photos of registered African violets
The home page will offer a lot to read also.

I am just going 'bonkers' over these Gloxinias or Sinningias.......
This is 'Charlotte'....

Once they quit blooming I am told to remove all but the bottom layer of leaves until the tuber starts new growth. That means I get to cut the center out and start a new one ..........hip hip hooray.

This is my no name streptocarpus. Her blooms are tiny and she appears to stay very compact. I think Jim might have told me the name at one time, but I can't find what he said.

Ohhhhh, Charlotte is my favorite there. She is so pretty and colorful and perfect. You grow them so well! So how long it the blooming time on those?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

This one started blooming about a month ago and still has lots of buds yet to open. Plus, these tubers are small ones . David Thompson who hybridizes them warns me just to wait until they fully mature. He has said that 2 of them will take up an entire shelf of gro lights. I can't wait.

When I grew sinningias from seed it took 7-8 months for them to get this big and start blooming. These I got from David already had tubers in a 2 1/2" pot.

Some of the plants were broken in transit so I have already cut the centers out and they are rooting beautifully. Some even have buds on them now.......let me take a quick picture of them (they are domed). I am quite sure the buds had already initiated before I started rooting the centers. It will be fun to see how long it takes (guessing 3 months or so) before I get a nice size tuber ready to bloom again..............

Just awesome, Gail! So what you are saying is they will bloom for about 3 months, then you cut them back and make more babies. After that, how long does it take for them to grow back and start blooming again? I may not be making any sense here. I guess I am curious about the length of time between the blooming periods.

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

One more question, Gail...what size pot and does the type of pot matter?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

These came from plant_maniac (David Thompson) with big tubers in a 2 1/2" pot. He told me to leave them in the pot they came in until they were through blooming. When they are through, I am going to pot them up in a bigger pot as they are very top heavy.

I am going to estimate (without a lot of knowledge) that the centers I planted will get nice size tubers in 4 months.......maybe a little longer) Will keep you all informed. This is just waaaaay tooooo much fun for me!!

****edited to say that I am going to have to find out how long it takes to bloom again from the original tuber sent (on those that weren't broken in transit)

Look how many buds are on Sinningia 'Nancy'.

I have four gro lights on them as they need so much more light than most plants, but you can also see where I burned the foliage. I am going take one light out tonight..........maybe 3 will work better.

Okay, now it is a toss up between Charlotte and Nancy! Please take a pic when they fill a shelf. That would be a wow factor.

Does anyone know how to type an article in our journals. Then I could hyperlink it so you all could read it. I have a question into terry to see how to do it...........

You missed the first gloxinia that bloomed........This is 'Paula'

You all are so nice..............I am getting ready to order seeds, so jannich and anyone else , get your 'wants' ready for the seed order...........

***hint hint.......jannich go to the post office tomorrow..............you might have one of David's sinningias........

jannich, do you have your old pictures of the sinningias we grew from seed last year? If you do, we might start a thread for everyone to post old pictures of gessies grown in the past.............I think it would be fun to see..............

I figure I should post a few pictures, before my membership expires!

Here is a strep that is starting to bloom - this is one of the few that survived the trip from the UK.

This is Bob Serbin. I thought it would be more a cherry red color, but maybe that will brighten as the plant gets older.
