Becky's MGs and Other Plants Part 9

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

This is the only one I have at my new place. Don't know the name.
This one is best viewed from overhead. I tried to turn down the
glare some.

What is running out of time? I have planted in first of august and had blooms until november, just curious about our growing zone differences ..

Jackie - That's a genuine bummer that you couldn't bring all your beautiful Clematis with you when you moved. I love mine and would be bummed out leaving so many behind. But sometimes things happen and you don't have any control over the situation. I love the one at your new place! I love those deep pink/red colors! Do you know the name of it?

Oooh! Blue Star and Pearly Gates grown together would look fantastic! Nice MG combo to grow together! :-) Be sure to post photos if you do!!! I wanna see!

Debra - Some of the tri-color vines bloom later than I. nils or I. purpureas, because of that ... you might not get seeds before the cold comes rolling in at the end of the season. That happened to me 2 years ago when I first started growing MGs! It's disappointing ... BUT ... there is always next year! :-) Lovely blooming pair you got there! Love the foliage too! Great shot!!!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Oh, so it is about the seeds then? well.. thats good to know.. I can plant my "invasives" and not worry about seeds scattering..

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - Hopefully ... though some I. pupureas are pretty dang tough! LOL!

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

I have some questions about the Japanese MGs. Mine are in mostly shades, some very late afternoon sun. I do notice that when it's hot or in the 90's, it tends to wilt after 2:00pm. Could the JMG be grown in the shade?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, My Sazanami is from Karen, Gardener 2005 I got in on the
tail end of the sds she shared in 07. Sazanami Light. Last yr I only got
one sd since I left it in a tiny 3 inch pot. That's the seed I sent you
I really liked my blooms from last yr. If this yrs turns out like this one, I'll be happy

lili the jmg can be grown in shade but all morning glories need some sunlight. i tried them in shade last year and not one bloomed.

mine wilt due to the heat but i water around 6 30 7 when the sun is going down or early in the morning they perk right back up. mgs like water so it wont hurt them once they are going to water every day in our heat.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

thanks!

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

i just looked at mine and they look wilty but hopeing it will rain and then wont have to water but they will perk back up as always do. and your welcome

9:30 at NIGHT! Oh wow! Is it in the shade during the day? You lucky duck to get all day blooms! :-)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Becky this is on the "lions mane yarn loop" that is on the northside of the Patio, in full sun there, but u can see they have the other plants giving them some sort of shade I think.. tomatoes, giant cosmos, tall zinnias, yelllow eveningprimrose, four o clocks are not your typical patio container plants, but they give me the "shade" I need to cover the strings of vines I have twining..
good news is , they just sway in a storm and do not get stressed out with this stuff.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - You've figured out the perfect way to grow your plants! Companion planting!

I've not watched this TV show before, but saw it mentioned on the internet news today, so decided to watch the video. After losing my wonderful Mother to this awful disease called cancer, I am particularly touched by such expressions of awareness. This dance routine was about bringing the message of hope to Breast Cancer patients. It's simply beautiful and I hope you will not only watch the dance routine of this talented couple, but the judges opinions afterwards ... all on this video. Be sure to get a Kleenex. You'll need it!

Enjoy! Support Cancer Awareness!

~Becky~

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Wow! I love to dance, always did, and seeing this couple dance to make people see their emotional display of Cancer awareness was amazing.. thanks so much Becky..

The Diluted Fuji no Muraski vine is finally dying. And I have been noticing all the blooms are reverting back to what appears to be the typical FNM bloom. Ironically, those blooms seem to be producing a little pollen. I might have to use the pollen in a cross. ;-)

well, that is a beautiful bloom.. I hope I can see something like that out of the seeds I planted this past week.. well, not that one exactly, but anything other than the beautiful pinks I have been enjoying, will be a pleasure...

Melisa - Congratulations! THAT is exactly what the true willow leaf vine looks like! You are the third person I know to get a seed of mine displaying that gene. Good luck crossing it with another full petal blooming willow vine! It is most unusual, isn't it?! Quite pretty! It would be nice to get larger blooms. What size are yours? About 3"?

Very cool that yours is doing so well and now blooming! Wonderful pictures, too! :-)

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

it is 2 3/4"- to almost 3" a gorgeous bloom, and it had a ton more buds on it,i just eish the other will mg would hurry and start blooming so i can polinate them and see if i can get you some seeds, maybe it will before it gets cold,i hope to get you some seeds so you can enjoy this beauty, thxs againf ro sharing it with me and i hope to return a favor for you thxs again

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Melisa - You are quite welcome! Good luck hand-pollinating it with the other vine! :-) I'm just glad some folks did get the mutant gene in their vines! So cool to see, even if just in photos! :-)

Atkinson, NH(Zone 5a)

Becky...Your morning glories are something to dream for...Our home is in NH, but we have a place in Okeechobee Fla too...I did not realize morning glories even bloom in Florida...I'll have to keep that in mind when we retire...Although we only visit our place down there a few times a year, every trip we plant something...hard to keep it under control though... Good luck on the MG's survival and multiplication

I've nothing to contribute to this, so I won't
grrrr! beautiful, Becky thanks.

Jon

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Debra! I have my fingers crossed that you get the mutant willow leaf gene on at least one of yours! :-) XXX

Jon - I will send you some seeds of the willow vine. But ... only some of the seeds produce the willow gene from any given vine. So I can not say whether or not you will get that gene from the seeds I send you. I have a LOT of seeds and have had NONE grow into the Willow gene for me. All the seeds I have and have shared are from a single vine!

Unfortunately, I do believe I ripped a volunteer out of the ground last year that looked like it might have had that gene before I realized what it was! arghhhhh!! I could write a book on my blunders! LOL!

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

i think it looks cool too.

Tokyo, Japan(Zone 10a)

Don't mention blunders Becky I'm the worlds worst!
One of my best/worse was when I threw a handful of slug pellets into my garden fish pond!
Spent the rest of the day cleaning it out,Lol Wasa willow gene?
We ought to start a garden blunders thread as a warning to others!

Jon

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jon - Yikes! Slug pellets in the pond! LOL!

I do seriously have it over your blunder ...

I accidentally watered some of my plants with full strength bleach! Luckily I realize what I had done and took immediate action. I only lost one young seedling. Though I must admit ... some of the vines had a shorter life cycle that usual ... LOL! See my thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1008188/

I think the Willow gene is a mutant that the Japanese discovered crossing morning glories. The typical Blue Asagao vine and bloom look like this:
http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/i/54167/
The mutant willow gene makes a vine that looks like what Melisa got in her photographs! Cool, huh?!

(Zone 7a)

Jon, Becky has given links to some great pics of MG flowers with the willow gene. Here is an explanation about its nature: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6916904

Hi Karen, nice to hear from you! Thanks for the link.

Jon

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Becky , if I get BAW the way you posted in the link, I will be very very pleased.. gene or no gene that is a great looking plant.. speaking of great looking plants, I can't tell you how very very pleased I am with this plant I grew out from your seeds.. I have been hovering over this one for weeks.. Blue Jishi X TenTen is what you had it marked.. what ever it is I knew from first true leaf in the middle of the coctail gin begonias that it was gonna be one of my favorites.. I can not thank you enough..

I Knew If I Put It In The Tomatoe Patch It would Bloom!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - Oooooh! Your Jishi has a nice white border! I always love that one, too! More compact and has some cool looking leaves, doesn't it? Yours is stunning! Nice photo of it, too! :-)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I just love it, thanks so much.. I can't tell you how much I have been enjoying watching it grow..I can't wait for pre bush X rabenda, BAW and the choclate something you gave me to get going.. I planted all of what I had left from you..( I ran out of Karens' purple blizzard in the winter , I was able to get a couple blooms, remember?)
Here is Jishi tonight as I was showing it to DH..

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - I think you will like the others, too! The Jishi is one that could be grown in a pot with Bamboo stakes. It is more compact. Also a nice one to grown indoors! It's possible you might get a few double blooms on it in the future. Sometimes they do produce the doubles on this cultivar.

You'll be getting other cultivars from me for next year! Hang on to your horses, cause I've got some great cultivars to share with you to grow next year, too! :-)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Becky, it is in a pot believe me. and it is coming inside this winter too.. LOL I am going to remodel the pink bedroom to a morning glory room.. That is my plan and I am sticking to it. I do need to know something.. should the I. Carneas I have going ( about 6 of them) come inside or will they do okay out in the winter and snow?
Here is a new one for me.. no Id but I know it came from a DGr.. it is small and very light pale pink..

Thumbnail by joeswife

The blue Jishi hybrid is quite nice, Debra, great growing!
