Becky's MGs and Other Plants Part 9

We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1010037/

Drum roll please ...

This is the absolutely STUNNING Calystegia hederacea (Japanese False Bindweed)!!! Many thanks to Ron for giving me Sally's name! She probably doesn't have a lot of this plant to share, so I feel really, really fortunate to be the thankful recepient of a couple of small starter rhizomes of this vine! THANK YOU, SALLY!!!

This vine is now one of my Top 10 favorite MGs!

And I now understand why some folks here (Beth?) love bindweed. If the White Wild American Bindweed looks anything like this vine, then it must be beautiful!

And to my absolute amazement, the bleach incident didn't seem to affect this vine. (Huge sigh of relief!)

Isn't this bloom a show-stopper? It is about 2" in size and looks like a peony or small rose bloom! I believe the blooms will be bigger as the plant gets larger. It is currently a very small vine. I have one other in a pot and it also has buds forming. Can ya see me smiling? :-) :-) :-) :-) I am doing the happy dance! :-D

Another view! Isn't this the SWEETEST MG bloom you ever saw? Maybe it's just because I am partial to roses. Hee, hee!

I now want some the invasive American Bindweed! LOL!

What a beauty the Calystegia hederacea is! Now I need to figure out how to propagate this species! I googled and find very little information about this vine. I checked the bloom and didn't see any reproductive parts. Cuttings to root? I don't know. But this is one species that MUST be shared with every MG lover here on this forum. No collection is complete without it! Trust me when I say that! It is also a perennial that grows from a rhizome. You gotta have it, believe me!!!

My Mother must be looking down from Heaven and smiling on me today. Another wonderful surprise ...

A volunteer of Kohan (blizzard form) bloomed it's first bloom for me today. The bloom is huge! Another of my Top 10 favorites! I must have dropped a seed as it is growing underneath the back post of the arbor outside of the garden bed. I hope the rats don't chew it apart. Gotta figure out how to protect this vine...

im in love with that bindweed if you every get seeds from it look my way i am on my knees begging pretty please. so pretty.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Even though the two vines in this photo are looking worse for the wear, just look at all the blooms on Diluted Fuji no Muraski!!! And you can bet I was out there trying to pollinate these blooms. Fingers crossed as the pollen production is very low ...

I am telling ya ... Mother Nature is smiling on me today!

Becky, thank you for the offer on the Mexican Hydrangea. I can get one from my neighbor and I'm going to try them in a container this fall. For some reason, ours bloom late in the summer here.

I love those binweed. They are so pretty. I have never seen such a plant. Do you know how tall the vine will get?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

And here is the NOID 4-colors bloom today. I know that this is a cross because the parent vine (Shibori Purple x Gray Lady) had solid color leaves. This vine not only has these beautiful blooms, but also has variegated leaves! I have to look back at a previous thread to see what name Darren came up with (as I don't remember). It's a keeper and it is producing seed pods! :-)

My clematis is coming back around this MG for another round of blooms! It's been a really good growing season for me so far this year! Whoo Hoo!

Marie and all - I hope to be able to figure out how to get more Calystegia hederacea (Japanese False Bindweed) from mine for sharing with those here on this forum. It's a perennial. It's beautiful! It can probably be grown in a pot and overwintered indoors. And it is like no other Convolvulus I have ever seen as far as the blooms go. And the topper ... the sun has been shining on it all morning and the bloom has not wilted! Now that is what I call a PERFECT MG plant! :-)

Nicole - Since this is the first time I have ever grown this vine, I have no idea of it's growth habits. We shall see! ;-)

Wow, that is fantastic. I'm always sad to see the MG wilted after the sun comes out...

More MG blooms from this morning. This is the ever-graceful Silk Rose.

Here is a LYK cross. I bet it was crossed with Shibori Purple x Gray Lady cross. LOL! Love the colors in this bloom. Very small bloom though. About 2".

Another LYK vine bloom. I have several LYK unknown crosses all growing in the same pot. Here is one that looks totally different. Looks a little like a pink version of Fuji no Monet. :-)

That's it for some really lovely MG photos. Here is my birdfeeder with a dove and a female Cardinal having lunch together. :-)

And lastly ... this is a photo of a Gulf Fritillary Butterfly that I had just released. :-) (Excuse the blurry photo!)

Plant Description: Japanese bindweed is a creeping perennial. Its appearance is similar to that of hedge bindweed except it has smaller flowers and the bracts enclosing the base of each flower are smaller. The weedy form that escaped cultivation has a distinctive double flower. Compared with other bindweed flowers, this is a unique flower in that it has twice the number of petals and looks similar to a rose or carnation. No plants studied so far have produced seeds, so it is assumed that reproduction is vegetative by way of spreading roots.

* Root system - Roots are perennial and spreading.
* Stems - Stems are usually hairless.
* Leaves - Leaves are alternate, triangle-shaped, and hairless. At the base of each leaf are 2 lobes, one on either side of the leaf stalk (petiole).
* Flowers - Most naturalized individuals have double the number of petals so they appear to have a flower inside of a flower. Flowers are funnel-shaped, pink, and 1 to 2 inches long. Attached to the stalk and enclosing the base of each flower are 2, small, leaf-like bracts.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

so you propegate it by roots or tubers

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Oops ... forgot this last MG photo. This is Hein no Hikari. Very delicate looking. :-)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Marie! I got these as tubers or possibly rhizomes which were very small. Sally told me that when they are larger, the rhizomes or tubers go pretty deep. So my guess is that they spread underground?

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

yea they do from what my guy at ohio state is telling me. they are like pandurata tubers. i wonder if you can take the vine like blue dawn vines and let it touch dirt will it root that way. i would love to have one and a few different ones. they are extinct here in sc and pandurata is on its way out too it seems.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I can see why you love that one so.. all your blooms are just awsome.. I am glad you are getting blooms off your older vines.. I love that, I bet they set seeds for you to share with others .. I had to leave my Albevinia inside to keep the bloom from opening while I am here at work.. it is going crazy.. the plantesis had at least 8 blooms on it, and rebecca had 4 getting ready to open.. I am sneaking in from owrk so can't show pictures my cypress vines are up and blooming.. I just love to look at yours because I know I have some planted somewhere from you..
I would just let the leave stems droop to the soil and let the roots come on their own instead of trying to cut it up to divide it.. but, that is me.. Oh yes, please, get a rat trap! LOL just kidding..

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

More gorgeous blooms Becky. Love all of them.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Marie - The growth habit I am observing is that the Calystegia hederacea grows one vine stem. I think all the action takes place underground. And that is what I will be checking from time to time. I believe it produces rhizomes that spread unseen in the soil. I don't know how invasive it is. I don't believe it is too aggressive. But if it is ... bring it on! I am totally in love with this plant! It can take over my entire picket fence garden bed and I would be delighted.

Well, much to my delight... it is still in bloom today. We had a downpour last night. Didn't seem to faze it. The bloom has opened up a bit more today. I can see reproductive parts now, but no pollen. Believe me! I tried with my magic paint brush. I think that rhizomes are how it spreads and reproduces. Give me time to grow mine, so that I can eventually share with my friends here! :-)

Here is today's photo of the same bloom from yesterday. I wonder how many days it stays blooming before the bloom expires? I expect to find out. :-)

its a beauty for sure. Well the people i have been talking to have studied it for years and none seem to ever see seeds. so it has to by underground tubers.

i have gotten into the wild mgs as they seem to be disappearing in places. where my hubby is at there is supposed to be several wild bindweed varities there and he hasnt seen any at all. scary thought that native mgs will vanish. thats why the guy up at ohio state is trying to get things on endangered list like the one you have.

seems sad that people kill them then appreciate them when gone and want them back when gone.

i would love a yard full of that one too and would give it more if needed they are so pretty.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Marie and Melisa! I've just never seen an MG bloom quite like this! And the fact that the bloom is still going strong is such a surprise! What a beautiful vine! :-) I am sooo planning to share this with friends here on the forum as it produces offspring rhizomes. :-)

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6817773 Holy Cow!! LUV LUV LUV it!!!

awww well I bet they were absolutely stunning... I know how it feels to miss the fresh flush and only get a picture of the left overs LOL

I'm still waiting on that crazy "mystery" vines to bloom.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

they look pretty even though wilted.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

The Calystegia hederacea finally wilted the end of the second day. I am stoked! What an amazing vine! It's my number one favorite right now because of the long lived bloom and the fact that it looks like a miniature rose. So delicate! Here is a photo of it finally wilted. You can see another bud or two that will open in a day or so. All I can do is SMILE! I really am enjoying this species. What a stunner! (At least in my book!)

Nicole - This photo is great! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6823465 Lovely blooms even as they are going down for the count! Thanks for sharing your blooms on that vine! Nice!!

I got another bloom of my NOID 4-colors vine. I tell you, this photo doesn't do it justice. The color was more of a deep purple with blue, pink, and white. It stands out even from a distance because of it's gorgeous deep mutiple of colors! I hope to get lots of seeds to share this one around. I want everyone to grow it out and give me their opinion in real life. Photos just aren't good enough. It's an experience! lol

My yard is FAST becoming a jungle! I've been outside in the heat for two days now whacking away and I still have a lot more to do! Here is the next area of whacking that I need to do. This is the path to the back of my house. There are the cowpen daisies in all their glory on one side and a huge Porterweed bush on the other. The bees and butterflies are everywhere. It's like a 6 lane freeway trying to walk through that area. Gotta dodge the insects! LOL!

Here is a lovely, but different bloom pattern from Keiryu today. Great vine! Always aims to please and boy does it ever!

My 3 kids gave me a Walmart gift certificate and money for Mother's Day. I have been holding on to it. I was undecided if I should just use it for the weekly trip for groceries or actually spend it on myself. My kids wanted me to spend it on ME. So I have been looking around every week. Well, for two weeks now I have stood in front of the fountain display at their clearanced items. They had two. One fountain had 2 levels and then this one had 3 tiers. I chose this one because it was so elegant looking! I could barely get the box in my van with all the seats in there. But I managed. Got it home and starting tearing right into it! I love a fountain in the front garden bed. My old one stopped working and the dang pump was attached to the top tier so I could NOT replace it. So what a waste of money. This one has a seperate pump that I can replace when it goes bad. Isn't this lovely! It was half price. ($75) Believe me! That is a good deal! I love it and so does my family. We all stood out and admired it tonight after I hooked it all up. :-)

I still feel a little guilty about spending the money for it. But it sure made me smile. I love the sound of water everytime I walk in or out of the front door. My kids were very happy I bought something I really wanted. ;-)
